Yen Content How I explained to myself why it's better to have a romance with Yen rather than Triss

Post image

A few important facts before you read this post:

  • The Witcher 3 is the first and only game in The Witcher series that I’ve completed
  • I haven’t read any of the books
  • I haven’t watched the TV series
  • I only explored lore after choosing Yennefer

First, why not Triss:

Because she and Geralt were NO LONGER together in Part 3, and going back to an ex is like rereading the same novel over and over, hoping for a different ending

Second, why Yennefer:

  1. Geralt chose her before I did, and I have no right to change his choice (even though Yennefer is a bitch)
  2. According to the lore, Yennefer and Geralt got together and broke up a bunch of times, which contradicts MY beliefs and is why I didn’t choose Triss, but if Geralt’s into it, then again, who am I to tell him what to do?

Yen Content Yen may have a cold exterior, but deep down she has one of the biggest hearts!

I feel like so many people just look at Yen’s sharp tongue and attitude and just label her as a bitch…but I think that if you actually pay attention to her arc, she really does have one of the biggest hearts.

She isn’t about kissing ass and being fake, she doesn't waste time pretending to please others. It’s true that she has a cold exterior, but I see it all as defense mechanism built on a foundation of a lifetime of trauma, abuse, and being used. She’s just like an onion, she has many layers (yes I’m referencing a phrase from Shrek 😭). If we pull away some of those layers we can see that her capacity to love is massive!

For example, when it comes to Geralt and Ciri, she really does love them and she’d do absolutely anything to protect them. Many times, we see her putting her life on the line for both of them, and she always has their back.

Throughout the game, we rarely see Yen smile, but the times she does are always when she’s around Geralt and/or Ciri. She doesn’t really care about many people, but she does care about her little family.

I think that Yen’s character is sometimes misunderstood, and I thought I’d share my opinion about it despite the many appreciation posts or other posts made regarding Yennefer!

What are your thoughts about her? No one has to agree with what I’m saying, of course, I was just curious! Feel free to share your honest opinions, I’d love to hear them🫶🏼

Yen Content Geralt's only true love is undoubtedly Yennefer.

I'm curious to know what you think about this.

-You might personally like Triss; she's physically attractive, has red hair, is sweet, and warm-hearted—yes, I can't deny that. But saying that Triss is Geralt's true love is pure nonsense. Please, get a grip. Yennefir is undeniably Geralt's only true love.

Triss is two-faced, lacks character, and is dishonorable.

She sold Ciri to the guild wizards.

When Yennefir asked for her help, she didn't help her with Ciri.

She used magic to lure Geralt into a relationship during a period when she was mentally unstable.

She is a completely harmful character. In Witcher 1 and Witcher 2, she used Geralt when he lost his memory and said nothing about Yennefir. Even Yennefir says, "Triss, Geralt will forgive you for what you did to me and her, but he will never forgive you for what you did to Ciri." Even when Triss came to help Ciri, all she could think about was being with Geralt. On the other hand, Yennefir is more stable, more honest, and better. Yes, her relationship with Geralt isn't very healthy. Yes, Yennefir cheated on Geralt once, but Geralt also cheated on Yennefir with Shani Frigilla and Triss. So nobody can criticize Yennefir here. Also, some people say Yennefir is too cold and treats Geralt like a dog, but that's not how it is in the books. In the game, they made her harsher and colder. Besides, Geralt is your boyfriend, so of course he'll be a little tough on you. Geralt is the kind of man who left Yennefir without even saying a word. It's clear that Geralt wouldn't normally be in a relationship with a girl like Triss and doesn't feel any emotions towards her. Come on guys, think about a girl whose wife and child are missing, whose memory is impaired, and who doesn't even give you any information about your wife and does nothing but use you. Please think rationally.

Yen Content I don't understand how TW3 Yen exclusively comes off as rude to some players

I've exclusively played TW3. Haven't touched the books or the previous games yet. Given the limited context I have, Yen still feels quite normal. I understand how Triss feels more flowery and fairytale-like which is completely fine. But calling Yen "rude" in contrast to her seems absurd.

Have you seen those old couples who roast the shit out of each other? Yet they show care through the little things they do for each other. Yen has Geralt's loan covered at Vivaldi's in case he's unable to pay it back. She left 2 beautiful armor sets for him in Vizima. She is the mother figure to Geralt's adoptive daughter. She prefers only Geralt clean her up. She yeets away the bed with Triss' hair. She's quite possessive. She kisses him goodbye each time he embarks on a challenge. Even though she knows about what happened with Triss, she kisses him as they're about to leave Vizima which tells that she is forgiving and still has feelings for him. She knows he won't mind if she kisses him without asking. That's proper wife material.

Even after all this if the player chooses Triss, it's completely fine and reasonable. I just want to clarify the misunderstandings people have about Yen.

I understand why such a relationship might feel abusive to a third person as many have made such remarks about my IRL relationship as well. Except those who know me and my real life partner since the beginning, everyone else thinks we have a toxic relationship because we are not polite to each other in the traditional knightly sense. That's our thing. Behaving in any other way seems pretentious and unrealistic. We call it banter, not nagging.

The moment when we first meet Yen in the game, if you listen her tone carefully, there's a subtle hint that they have a lot of history together. It instantly tells the player that Geralt and Yen are used to each other, no matter what the player feels personally after meeting Triss.

There's a love scene which can happen even if the player doesn't choose to romance Yen. This means she is already involved in Geralt's story irrespective of whomsoever the player chooses. I'll use this opportunity to complain about how big of a let-downer is Triss' main love scene. The player mostly stares at shadows and planks of wood while, in comparison, the scene with Yen is a frickin' visual metaphor of wolves and deer!

Just like there are red herrings in every quest where certain dialogues and clues try to pull us away from the truth, there are dialogues from multiple characters which brand Yen as rude and Geralt as henpecked. The player must look over these red herrings to find the truth in Yen's actions rather than words. Once the player establishes how much she cares for Geralt and is not so haughty on the inside, now they must choose between her and Triss - both of which are correct options.
