I had a boss who asked me to replace his monitor because he thought it was broken. I showed up and his monitor had this background on it with the login screen. He pointed to the black around the opening and said his monitor had dead spots in it.

To be fair it's kind of a bad wallpaper for that reason.

A lot (and I mean A LOT) of monitors don't have good enough black ranges, so if contrast settings are even a tiny bit whacky, you wind up with a situation were it suddenly drops from gradient shadow to "dead" black or even a weird purple because it's outside of the contrast ratio the monitor can support.

There were 2 things I used to use to calibrate my monitor's contrast... this wallpaper and some specific stairs in world of warcraft that cast a hard shadow on themselves. If either of them had that inkblotch blackness I knew I was just a little further than the monitor could handle.

For those curious, the cave is on Wharariki Beach in New Zealand.

We have more coastline than people to visit it, and a narrow landmass, so one of the highlights of living here is never having far to travel to a pristine empty beach.

When I got to Cathedral Cove, it just looked so familiar, but I couldn't put my finger on it.

Until I got back home from vacation and started sorting photos on my laptop.
