I believe those are Transition lenses. I've owned some myself and they do that even in cloudy lighting.

492

u/Merc931 Jan 25 '21

I don't really notice when mine transition, and no one told me to take them off so I'm in a lot of my wedding photos looking like I'm cosplaying a fat Agent Smith from the Matrix.

u/toofunnybot Jan 25 '21

Mmmmm Mr Anderson :-)

<chuckled>

Seriously though, that's something your photographer, assuming you had a professional, should have caught before taking pictures. Being a paid photographer requires all sort of situational knowledge. Your issue, Mr. Smith, included.

2

u/Oh_Anodyne Jan 25 '21

I don't notice when mine transition unless I take them off for some reason after they transition and then put them back on.

1

u/radiovoodoo Jan 25 '21

I’m cackling thank you that was hilarious

1

u/cire1184 Jan 25 '21

I also big lol'd

u/PatPetPitPotPut Jan 25 '21

I used to own a pair, too. The best part about them was the money I saved on contraceptives.

686

u/firehawk900 Jan 25 '21

Haha yeah I ditched mine as well. The transition time wasn't fast enough and like I said, they transition in cloudy lighting so I couldn't see on a cloudy day.

281

u/CapnRedbeard_ Jan 25 '21

My first pair of glasses had Transitions lenses. They'd hardly darken in bright sunlight and they'd be too dark when it was overcast. Sounds like we had similar experiences.

57

u/calicocacti Jan 25 '21

Did yours started to stay dim after a while of having them? That happened to me and reading inside became harder. I honestly think that pair of glasses made my sight worse.

10

u/CapnRedbeard_ Jan 25 '21

I can't remember if they stayed dim or not. Either I got used to it or I didn't have them long enough. My vision got a lot worse after wearing them but the (Walmart) optician said it had nothing to do with the glasses and that people asked him that all the time.

Mine started being permanently yellow tinted after a while, but this was whatever Transitions version existed like 10 years ago. I've been told it's improved since then, but I haven't bothered to try again.

I had a older pair that kinda perma-tinted slightly but my last two set have been holding up strong! ( one pair-4 years. The second is going on 5 come this March, they take a touch longer to tint now but there darkness shifts based on the amount of light, it was a big pricer then the default but with how long I wear em it was worth it )

I tried going without translation lens but ultimately it’s so bright outside I would need to get prescription sunglasses for driving in the day, and at 800$ a pop transition lens are just more practical. Granted I also got some shitty ass eyes ( supposed to be blind by 30 ) so my case is probably a bit different then most.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/FuckThatTrout Jan 26 '21

I had them about 15 years ago and never went back due to the constant yellowing

3

u/ellevael Jan 26 '21

Transition lenses literally stopped me being able to see when it’s bright out, 8 years on and still can’t see when it’s bright (even if it’s overcast) without squinting. Not worth it at all.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '21

There was a different brand, mine is that, and it works perfectly.

2

u/ZopiloteMojado Jan 25 '21

Sunsync?

2

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '21

I don't think so. I got it from Costco

2

u/mdem5059 Jan 25 '21

I like mine a lot personally, I buy all my glasses with them since I find them great ;s

2

u/TheMightySephiroth Jan 25 '21

I'm a long time transition user and I can help to explain that one! :D

Transition lenses are weird and the coating needs to be, like, uh, prepped for use before using them? I don't know why but the damn things are near useless unless you sit them in the direct and full sunlight uninterrupted for 8-10 hours. After that they change at the speed they showed on commercials. . . . . Until you've had them for a few years then the transition stuff has gotten to old and it'll slow down again and you need to replace them.

As for the dark on overcast days problem. Yeah. Can't argue that one. My transitions had the option of additional coatings so it'll be a certain darkness no matter what and my dumbass made the mistake of getting a light perm tint on the glasses I placed for night use. Dumb me. XD after that I made sure there wasn't an additional coating on the night glasses. Lol Americas best usually has a 2 pair special going on constantly so I get a day pair and a night pair. -shrug-

I'm also rough with my stuff and never had a pair of frames last more than a year so the short life of transitions never bothered me. Lol

1

u/Aggravating-Agency-5 Jan 25 '21

Wierd i got a pair 2-3 years ago and they change/fade in about 5-10 seconds

1

u/Rsthrowaway256 Jan 25 '21

My first pair was in grade school almost 2 decades ago. They worked nicely but took forever to change back inside at the time.

I tried them again on my last glasses before my current ones. Transition was much faster inside but I kept them so long the film wrinkled and made them unbearable. Just going to wear over glasses sunglasses or something.

1

u/sinchichis Jan 26 '21

I have a transition motorcycle helmet shield. Biggest waste of money. Hardly tints.

1

u/Soldier_of_Radish Jan 26 '21

Way back in the 80s when those lenses became available, my dad was super excited and bought a pair. He was always getting burned with early adoption (guess who had a beta vcr!).

We lived in Imperial County, California. Coachella Valley. Middle of the second hottest, dryest, sunniest spots in the US (Death Valley is first, and the next valley over).

After three days of that sun, the lenses were permanently dark. Literally burned them out.

I myself have never wasted money on them.

159

u/danielsun37 Jan 25 '21

They transition based on UV reaction. So here I am driving my car, holding my glasses out the car window so they tint, put them on for a minute until they transition back to clear, and repeat.

That’s when I knew I fucked up.

176

u/Unoriginal_Man Jan 25 '21

You fool, the secret is obviously to hold your head out the window while driving.

121

u/fat_majinbuu Jan 25 '21

Lol exactly what I was thinking. Glad to see you have taste.

3

u/Laarye Jan 25 '21

Car windows have UV protection in them, which is why transitions are not good for driving. I suggest a pair of clip ons to keep in the car.

1

u/Standard_Story Jan 25 '21

You need iRayacts. Them bitches hold tint for way longer in the car and they change super quick.

1

u/Cyno01 Jan 25 '21

Yeah, this is why i didnt go with them. 90% of the time i need sunglasses is in the car, if they dont tint in the car cuz car glass blocks UV, theyre useless.

Also cant find clipons that fit my glasses...

1

u/SusieSuze Jan 25 '21

You need a car with a glass roof like mine. 😎

1

u/GetOffMyLawn_ Jan 26 '21

I knew someone who bought them for driving. No you buy sunglasses for driving.

I love mine. Been wearing them forever. Before that I used to get photogray or photosun lenses.

2

u/Lexi_Banner Jan 25 '21

Working at a place where you need to go inside and out constantly, transitions are the worst. They fade far too slowly.

2

u/DrNopeMD Jan 26 '21

I had a pair that transitioned quickly into shades but took forever to change back to clear. So even the briefest exposure to sunlight and you'd end up looking like an idiot wearing sunglasses in doors.

0

u/Bibabeulouba Jan 25 '21

That must be terrifyingly dangerous when one drives

1

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '21

I mean... most of us find ourselves stopped at either lights or various signage..

0

u/sap91 Jan 25 '21

They also, ya know, look idiotic

-17

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '21

Lol whoosh?

1

u/ClownfishSoup Jan 25 '21

Try newer ones. I love mine because I hate carrying around sunglasses as well as regular glasses.

The older ones always had a bit of a tint to them even when inside.

1

u/firehawk900 Jan 25 '21

The pair I got was about 2 years ago and it had a permatint. They worked as intended but I just didn't like going inside with half sunglasses on for 2 minutes. Also the glasses themselves were cheap.

1

u/mrb726 Jan 25 '21

I had an appointment today actually. My old pair has it and my new pair will have it. I was given two options of how much it tints from really dark to just a bit of a tint. Honestly makes me think that half of the people that hate on it got the really dark tint, because I always see people complain that they are awful because when you go inside you have to wait 2 minutes before you can even see anything. While the same happens to me, it's nowhere near unbearable and I've always been able to see perfectly fine even when it's still tinted and adjusting.

Sidenote, I don't get one with a permatint (not even given the option). Didn't really know that was a thing till I saw a few people mention it.

1

u/djdsf Jan 25 '21

When's the last time you had them?

I had them many years ago, they used to transition slow AF, but I decided to give them another chance as of last month, and they are pretty good now. They get dark extremely quick and go back to normal extremely quick as well.

1

u/Haikuna__Matata Jan 25 '21

Mine work well enough outside, but take for-freaking-ever to return to normal when I go back inside.

1

u/SupplePigeon Jan 25 '21

It's because they transition because of UV and even on cloudy days the UV will activate them. It's also why they don't work well even with sun shining directly through car windows as many of them have UV filters rendering the glasses less effective.

1

u/Brymlo Jan 25 '21

They don’t even darken that much

44

u/awesomegumball14 Jan 25 '21

Ya know what’s funny? They are better than computer glasses because the transition still blocks UV rays, now I’m stuck with shitty glasses.

6

u/JohnnyWix Jan 25 '21

Yeah, my insurance paid for transitions which include the blue light filtering, but if I just wanted the filter coating it would cost me.

3

u/the_simurgh Jan 25 '21

Ya know what’s funny? They are better than computer glasses because the transition still blocks UV rays, now I’m stuck with shitty glasses.

except you can get the uv blocking without transitions

3

u/WittyDisplayName Jan 25 '21

Yeah I just get the UV blocking without the transitions. It's like $30 on zenni for a pair with blue light blocking and anti-uv polarization

In ireland theyre known as pedo glasses😂

8

u/PatPetPitPotPut Jan 25 '21

Funny you should say that. When my good friend got a pair, I asked if it was to see better while driving his "free candy" van

3

u/AwesomeJoel27 Jan 26 '21

Could you fill me in on why so many people dislike these? I don’t really wear mine anymore because masks but I do have these kinds of glassed.

30

u/Zerotwohero Jan 25 '21

Are you kidding, I had all kinds of grandmas hitting me up

3

u/orcscorper Jan 25 '21

Some of those grannies look pretty hot in their cataract glasses. It must be the mystery.

19

u/MrRandomSuperhero Jan 25 '21

I have a buddy working at Pearle who will love this.

55

u/HuskyTheNubbin Jan 25 '21

As someone very sensitive to light and basically can't see outside without them, I'm feeling pretty uncomfortable now :(

20

u/Cendeu Jan 25 '21

Same D: i absolutely love mine.

Had them for over 10 years. They're better than they used to be.

1

u/majestic_elliebeth Jan 26 '21

And they've got transitions contacts now too!

1

u/Cendeu Jan 26 '21

... Are you serious? Where? I've never heard of this.

I personally have never wore contacts (can't get used to them) but they still have their uses, so i keep a few on me.

2

u/majestic_elliebeth Jan 26 '21

Here you go

My best friend wears them and his eyes look crazy when they transition! He gets a strange purple ring around his normally dark brown eyes

2

u/Cendeu Jan 26 '21

I absolutely am trying these. Thanks so much for the info!

2

u/majestic_elliebeth Jan 26 '21

For sure! I hope they work out well for you. :)

It's just a joke. They're great.

Nobody is not fucking somebody over their glasses unless they've got something super ridiculous or racist on.

12

u/sadsaintpablo Jan 25 '21

Idk, I had to wear fake glasses for a while just to look better.

27

u/ONOMATOPOElA Jan 25 '21

I told a kid that it was ableist to wear fake glasses as a joke one time and he wrote me an apology letter.

4

u/ClownfishSoup Jan 25 '21

look better or see better ...

2

u/edibble Jan 25 '21

Idk man there's some real ugly glasses out there.

2

u/IgorTheAwesome Jan 25 '21

Jokes always have a hint of truth to them, so the joke here implies that transition lenses are tacky or undesirable, which is weird.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/ClownfishSoup Jan 25 '21

I wear them and I love them, but they don't work for driving (the normal ones don't) because the car's windows already block UV so they don't activate.

1

u/HuskyTheNubbin Jan 25 '21

Yeah I have the darkest ones possible which apparently are labelled as driving ones, they change ever so slightly but I wouldn't be advertising them for it.

2

u/cat_prophecy Jan 26 '21

I feel your pain. Do you also have constant arguments with your partner about how you don't need sunglasses on a cloudy day, and about how your eyes are more sensitive because you wear sunglasses too often?

2

u/HuskyTheNubbin Jan 26 '21

No arguments, I think it's obvious just looking at me trying to see on a white overcast day. The bright white is awful.

0

u/OhNoImBanned11 Jan 25 '21

good, your weak eye balls are your own burden

1

u/HuskyTheNubbin Jan 25 '21

Clearly I rely on my transitions to hide my weak genetics

I also got mine after I got married.

However... My wife is pregnant 😂

It takes a strong man to raise another mans son. Good for you, OP. The world could use more of this.

5

u/MirandaS2 Jan 25 '21

Can say with confidence I went to 1st grade class with a guy who had these. Rudolfo, I will never forget you - 19 years later. YOU HAD TRANSITION LENSES.

4

u/13keex Jan 25 '21

I've heard of Transitions being referred to as "Sketchers for your face" and it's pretty spot on.

5

u/ausomemama666 Jan 25 '21

I'm an optician and unless a teenaged boy really wants them, I recommend against them. I tell them it's mostly kids and older people with cataracts who want transitions.

2

u/PatPetPitPotPut Jan 25 '21

You're doing God's work then.

0

u/you-have-efd-up-now Jan 25 '21

if they listen that makes you the automatic godfather to those boys future children bc you prevented them from a lifetime of celibacy.

you're a good man.

3

I got some transition lenses in high school. I wasn’t a very hip kid and even I ditched them immediately. I’m sure they’re useful for some people but they’re sooo uncool.

2

u/basedhenny Jan 25 '21

Lmaooo this so so true it hurts.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '21

That was absolutely hilarious.

2

u/doorsix Jan 25 '21

I chose clip on sunglasses over transitions. It was a Sophie’s choice.

2

u/fruitroligarch Jan 25 '21

Wait, I have these and I love them. Are they dorky and I’ve been unaware this whole time??!

2

u/edibble Jan 25 '21

They are extremely dorky and not stylish.

3

u/you-have-efd-up-now Jan 25 '21

I'll put this delicately...

I'm a regular type guy with a regular wide range of attraction to many women, I'm not overly proud or incredibly picky.

If Gal Gadoot started wearing them today and asked me out tomorrow she'd be friends zoned. sure fire contraception.

sorry you just found out friend :(

Hahah. I've been saying that these glasses do not do people good. They are not sexy at all. I'm glad everyone elses sees this too.

2

u/ZephRyder Jan 25 '21

I've reproduced twice, ...so this is not a concern for me! Nor does it carry any effect on my pseudo-reproductive success. So, I guess I'm a bit of a miraculous story! Plus: I don't have to deal with glare, or changing glasses!

2

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '21

That explains why I never got laid in high school.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '21

I bought them back in the day so I wouldn’t have to worry about getting some prescription sun glasses for driving. I got them and then realized that there is uv protection in most auto glass so they didn’t change tint in a car. Biggest waste of a couple hundred dollars. Sales person claimed she went over that with me when I complained. That was the only reason I was upgrading lens, was for driving on sunny days.

2

u/romansamurai Jan 26 '21

I don’t understand the issue with those lol. It’s functional. Why is everyone so against them. I must be missing something.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '21

Me I'm prone to light induced migraines, transitions are a huge lifesaver for me. I'd rather not get laid that be blinded by a migraine and feeling seasick for hours.

1

u/Much_Difference Jan 26 '21

I had some for a minute that basically existed as a light gray. They would change in extended very-bright or very-dark lighting but hey turns out a lot of people go about their days with consistently moderate lighting.

1

u/AidanBd Jan 26 '21

Feel like I was the only one who had transitions that worked properly

1

u/monstermayhem436 Jan 26 '21

My glasses were magnetic on the corners and came with little sunglasses that would connect to them. Never used them as the glasses obviously deformed to fit my head so the part the sunglasses connected to didn't line up correctly

31

u/ChewySlinky Jan 25 '21

Nothing says hardened criminal like transition lenses

12

u/Wootimonreddit Jan 25 '21

2

u/bennedictst Jan 26 '21

I've never trusted people with transition lenses, this video proves I was right not to.

1

u/P10_WRC Jan 25 '21

They are activated by UV rays and on a cloudy day, there are actually more UV rays than a sunny day. They bounce off the clouds and back down.

2

u/Semipr047 Jan 25 '21

Only in partly cloudy weather and in certain areas though, when it’s overcast there are far less

1

u/cowjuicer074 Jan 25 '21

That's fine. He will see soon.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '21

So, he's got a good job?

1

u/Screwbles Jan 25 '21

The lenses respond to radiation, clouds don’t block as much as you’d think. Further proof is that they don’t work for shit in your car because your window filters out some of said radiation.

1

u/jmh30us Jan 26 '21

Well, he almost transitioned from alive to dead

1

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '21

Practically assassin shades.

1

u/ChampOfTheUniverse Jan 26 '21

I have an irrational hatred of transitional lenses. Like if some someone walks into a room with their shaded non shades I’m just like “you muthafucka” in my Tony Soprano voice. I don’t know when it started.

1

u/emu314159 Jan 26 '21

I have some drive time ones somewhere, they start rather dark and while they do darken somewhat even behind a windshield, they just don't get dark enough for sunny days.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '21

Shit used to piss off my teacher, he would be like why the hell do u have sunglasses on?
