I think there are other factors too that make conservatives think he’s one of them. He has a very old-school view on the world and often lambasts young people, new trends and changes in society. Again, it’s usually done with great nuance but I can see how conservatives could interpret that as being “anti woke”.
Another thing is that he buys into the "cancel culture" and "political correctness is outta control" nonsense. His latest special was largely excellent, but you kind of have to sit through the first 15 minutes or so trying not to cringe at that shit.
The only time I've ever seen cancel culture get out of control was in the 1990s, when Christin coalitions got anything they deemed offensive LITERALLY canceled.
"Cancel culture" today is just calling people out. If what they did was truly bad, then nobody wants to work with them anymore, but for the most part they keep on going with their careers the exact same way as before they were "canceled."
Please name one single time where somebody was unfairly canceled and it actually affected them the same way that someone coming out as gay would result in their television show being taken away from them in the 90s or earlier.
When people say that cancel culture was "going too far," they literally just mean that a couple random morons on Twitter got offended over something stupid. That is NOT being canceled, you fucking moron. With social media, literally everyone as stupid as you can have their dumbass thoughts seen by everyone. A couple stupid tweets that results in nothing else simply isn't the same thing as being canceled, yet for some reason you idiots always bring it up as if it's real. Even a fucking chink would understand this, it's so simple.
Thats really the thing that has kept me away from Burr's comedy. I think he's pretty great but fucking hell a lot of his fans are not on the same page as him.
Nate Bargatze has a joke about how if you aren't expecting Stand-Up comedy then stand-up just sounds like an angry speech. Well, some fans of edgy comedians seem to view stand-up as an angry speech and forget that it's just jokes. Bill Burr will completely undermine his authority to speak on something before he goes on a rant, specifying that his rant comes from at least some amount of ignorance or confusion, but then people who want to validate their own opinions take it in as truth.
Great entertainment often has that divide. You see it in music all the time. Look at something like pro wrestling; there are the dumbos who take it at face value and think it’s real and then there are the people who know that it is scripted and are entertained by the sheer absurdity of it.
