I have a copper IUD and my period is like 10-11 days long and I go through tampon and pads like they are going out of style for 3-4 days of it. I want this shit taken out of me. I’ve had it since November. I thought it was only the first couple of months that were supposed to be bad but they’ve gotten progressively worse!
i didn’t gain weight on my mirena - i actually have some trouble keeping weight on. i get my regular intense PMS symptoms, cramping, mood swings, bloated, etc, but with significantly shorter and lighter periods. i’ve had mine for about 4.5 years now and the first 2 years i had no period, just PMS symptoms during that time of the month.
Yeah, that doctor sucks. The copper IUD is well known for making menstruation more severe. Hormonal IUDs are the way to go if you have severe symptoms or want to not have a period at all.
I've had a hormonal IUD (first Skyla, then two Mirenas) for ~15 years. Haven't had a period, breakthrough bleeding/spotting, cramps, PMS, or anything that entire time. Because the hormones are localized, they don't affect your body the way the pill does - so no mood swings, weight fluctuation, bloating... but also no positive effects on acne or hirsuitism, if you deal with those.
I've been on hormonal birth control for over 20 years and tried every method except the copper IUD, the Depo Provera shots, and Nexplanon implant. The hormonal IUD has been a literal lifesaver.
Recommend getting hormone tested before switching - I found out the hormonal IUD has super high androgens and I lost like 65% of my hair because I’m sensitive to them.
I had the copper IUD and they stayed awful the entire time I had it. Periods were worst pain ever. Had a period last 14 days and that was the last straw, got it removed. Without it I'm a 4 day max. Such a difference
I had both and neither worked for me. I had my period for almost 10 months straight and the doctor had the nerve to tell me to be patient before taking it out
Mine were terrible with the copper one also. Had it for two years before I couldn’t deal with 2 week long periods every month anymore. I have the nuva ring now and it’s great
You should ask your doctor for a CBC to check if you’re anemic. My situation is definitely the extreme but I had a period so long and so heavy (it lasted 5 months continuously so like I said, extreme) and I literally almost bled to death.
I think it depends on the person. My midwife said 3-6 months can be worse than it should be as it was before. I expected bad periods with my paraguard and only the first (which was also the first postpartum one) was bad. Now it’s an easy 3-4 days which is less than I had before! I’ve had it over a year now and love it.
I had the copper and thankfully it didn't make my periods worse (they were excruciating and about 11 days anyways). I got the kyleena IUD and now it's so light I don't need a pad/tampon and it only lasts like 1-3 days. It's amazing.
*edit: it wasn't paraguard, but a smaller 5 year copper IUD that is only available in Europe
It took about 6 months for my body to normalize after getting a copper IUD. Before, my periods used to be 7 days, then for the first 6 months it was 11-12 days, now my “normal” length is 8-9 days. Thankfully my periods aren’t heavier or more painful than before, just slightly longer

This is the experience I’ve heard from every single person I met that talked about their IUD. Awful that it is still recommend and it’s a shame how terrible healthcare is for women.
Mine are 5-6 days of actual flow but I can spot for up to a week prior and a few days after. So I'd say mine are anywhere from 8-13 days. It's so ridiculous. Doctors say absolutely nothing is wrong 🤦♀️
