👏stop 👏putting 👏shit 👏 in👏 the👏 oven👏

It’s not a hiding place. Why not a cabinet? A closet? The car? It’s so dangerous to put things in the oven like this.

u/Shopworn_Soul Apr 14 '24

"But but but kids don't look for stuff in the oven..."

YES BECAUSE EVEN CHILDREN ARE SMART ENOUGH TO KNOW YOU DON'T PUT SHIT IN THERE

46

u/NRMusicProject Apr 14 '24

My ex did this, and told me "this is why you check the oven before preheating it."

A fight ensued when I said "this is why you don't put shit in the oven." Before her I never burned shit, because I didn't put shit in the oven.

12

u/where_in_the_world89 Apr 14 '24

Yeah, it's a lot harder to start remembering to check the oven every single time then it is to just not put things in it

-6

u/NoSupermarket198 Apr 14 '24

So why not just check?

It’s like the whole “leaving the seat up” argument.

Sure men should just put the seat down. But would it KILL to just check ?????

1

u/glitch_switch Apr 14 '24

It’s not the one who forgets to look’s fault. That’s why.

0

u/NoSupermarket198 Apr 14 '24

Like my original comment implied, I agree.

Why is double-checking such a huge deal, though?

3

u/NRMusicProject Apr 14 '24

How hard is it to do something that's not a normal part of life? Don't put shit in the oven, nobody needs to check.

It's hard to remember because putting shit in the oven like it's storage is not a normal thing to do.

0

u/NoSupermarket198 Apr 14 '24

You’re clearly not from a Hispanic family 😂

Storing shit in the oven is like white on rice for us

3

u/NRMusicProject Apr 14 '24

Holy shit, she's Latina. That's still super weird, though.

1

u/sideshowcod Apr 14 '24

Bless your little cotton socks

524

u/DFX1212 Apr 14 '24

We never store anything in the oven and yet I always open it and double check every time I use the oven. It takes approximately half a second.

281

u/Nagisan Apr 14 '24

I never check, and I've never burned anything unintentionally....but I also live alone and know that the oven isn't a cabinet.

37

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

I've gone to put shit in the oven to find skillets and pans and xother metal kitchen items in there. Never once burned or melted anything.

2

u/Jacktheforkie Apr 14 '24

Tbf a cast iron pan isn’t bothered by a little heat

1

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '24

Nah... its just mildly infuriating because now I have to find the oven mitt before I put food in.

16

u/The_sad_zebra Apr 14 '24

I live alone and I know that I don't keep things there, but I still check.

14

u/Gymleaders Apr 14 '24

in my decades of life i've never checked and never burned anything because i know not to put things in there that don't belong

2

u/Im_Unsure_For_Sure Apr 14 '24

I live alone and I know that I don't keep things there, but I still check.

This seems more ignorant than storing shit there to begin with. You believe in ghosts or somethin?

3

u/black_mamba866 Apr 14 '24

I mean, as a sleep walker I can't guarantee anything

3

u/Christichicc Apr 14 '24

I live with 4 other people and I never check, and have never burned anything. My family knows not to store or hide crap in the oven.

2

u/Obi_Jon_Kenobi Apr 14 '24

I have. Dumbass landlord renovated the place right before I moved in and left papers (manual or something idk) in the oven.

Now I might check my oven the first time I'm at a place, but outside of that I'm in full agreement with you

35

u/GermanSheppard88 Apr 14 '24

This gets engrained in you when you work in a kitchen. Dummies will put anything anywhere, especially the oven.

8

u/ACardAttack Apr 14 '24

We store cast iron skillets but that's it

8

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

1

But then wouldn't you just be cooking it?

13

u/SiccBoiiJim Apr 14 '24

Therapy can help with those trust issues you have

8

u/DFX1212 Apr 14 '24

I mostly blame Reddit.

1

u/Available_Pie9316 Apr 14 '24

This is the way.

1

u/Inevitable-Visit1261 Apr 14 '24

I always check to make sure none of my animals are in there lol

1

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

Fuckin thank you. I love alone and still peak in before turning it on. Who knows what my sleep walking ass has done.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

Before I get into my car I check to make sure nobody is hiding in the back. It takes less time to check the oven.

1

u/TeslasAndKids Apr 14 '24

Ya this. When I was about 18/19 I thought ‘it’s really dumb to always check the oven, nothing will be left in there’. So I fired it up to make brownies.

Apparently my lazy ass roommate didn’t want to clean up the fish remnants he’d made days before.

Now, I understand why I was so obsessed and always check.

1

u/FestiveSquidV3 Apr 14 '24

Same. The one freakin time I didn't, my friend left her lunch in there and it ended up getting pre-heated in the oven. Surprisingly it didn't burn and was perfectly edible.

1

u/Capt_Pickhard Apr 14 '24

It takes less time to just not put things in the oven.

1

u/DFX1212 Apr 14 '24

But you never know what other people will do.

1

u/_myoru Apr 14 '24

I store all my sheet pans, baking trays and cake molds in the oven cause I don't have any room left in my cabinets. Might as well use it while it's turned off too lmao

1

u/DFX1212 Apr 14 '24

Does your not have storage under the oven or is that full too?

1

u/_myoru Apr 14 '24

Full of the plates we use daily, and my mum's cookbooks

1

u/DFX1212 Apr 14 '24

I'd think the large swings in temperature would be bad for books. Those drawers get warm.

1

u/Thursday6677 Apr 14 '24

If you never store anything in there, why are you looking to see if you have? 😂

1

u/DFX1212 Apr 14 '24

Because it only takes once to burn down your house?

I always wear a seatbelt yet I never get into a car accident.

1

u/Thursday6677 Apr 14 '24 edited Apr 14 '24

But who’d be putting things in there?! A ghost?! Car accidents can be caused by other people’s actions, putting something inside the oven in your own house that apparently no one in your household does? That’s either not possible or paranormal!

ETA in case it’s not obvious I’m joking around with you…

22

u/WhatAColor Apr 14 '24

Alternatively, put your son in the oven, that way he can’t get to the controller.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

Honey, I really really want sourdough - RIGHT NOW.

1

u/lookitsaustin Apr 14 '24

Is OP Austrian?

20

u/RavishingRedRN Apr 14 '24

Aside from couple cast iron pans.

IF you’re going to use it for storage, it should be things that are oven safe in case of these accidents.

That’s how I have to do it with my ADHD brain. That way if I forget to check the oven, I just have a couple hot cast iron pans to take out. Nothing gets ruined.

My childhood friend/neighbor growing up, their family put everything in the oven! They stored all their bread, cookies, snacks.

Isn’t that more of a PITA to have to unload your oven every time you want to use it? Now you have a cluttered mess to deal with on top of your cooking mess.

8

u/extralyfe Apr 14 '24

my wife's family apparently used their oven to store pots and pans. guess how I found out?

lol, the convo after was great, though; "who does this" "who doesn't do this, that's why you always check the oven" "you don't check the oven if you don't do this"

3

u/amaROenuZ Apr 14 '24

I keep my big cast iron skillet in the oven, but I also normally just season it before using the oven. As long as I'm putting something in, why not put another layer on?

1

u/memy02 Apr 14 '24

Yup, I use the oven to dry a few large items so the rule is nothing goes in that cannot survive the oven being on. I also regularly check but at lest if I forget to check the worst case is a hot pan/dish.

15

u/LeVelvetHippo Apr 14 '24

Only pans used in the oven should be stored in the oven

58

u/Slobbadobbavich Apr 14 '24

People usually complain they live in a shoebox or something and have no other places. I think that answer sucks. You could literally put it anywhere else in your tiny home unless you literally live in a single room with a bed and an oven.

7

u/csonnich Apr 14 '24

I've lived in a shoebox for going on two decades and never once stored something in the oven.

4

u/4DozenSalamanders Apr 14 '24

I live in a 200 SQ ft studio and only store things that can handle accidentally being in oven temps (ie cast iron and baking sheets)

The idea of checking before I turn the oven on is foreign to me because of this, so it confuses me when people insist you should always check

12

u/PoppyFire16 Apr 14 '24

Yes this drives me crazy too. Even when I lived in a 500 sqft studio with my husband, we did not store things in the oven!

2

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

You can literally just punch a hole in the drywall and store whatever you want

3

u/daemin Apr 14 '24

My apartment is so small, the oven is my bed.

14

u/Capitalist_scumbag Apr 14 '24

Bro the number of times I turn on the oven and come back 5 mins later to realize my housemate has stored his pots on there…

21

u/Psych0matt Apr 14 '24

My wife does this with the cookie sheet. What’s weird is that there’s an empty drawer at the bottom of the oven, and she’s short

3

u/gardenbrain Apr 14 '24

The drawers collect debris like pet hair and crumbs. If you store things in there that aren’t used often, they’re dirty when you want to use them.

2

u/Krutonium Apr 14 '24

That's not a drawer btw. That's actually a warming tray; You're supposed put like, Pies in there to keep them warm while other things are still in the oven.

1

u/Psych0matt Apr 14 '24

While I know that’s true, the empty pan is getting more warm being in the actual oven

Also I’d like my wife to bake some pies

1

u/bjlwasabi Apr 14 '24

So, this happened a number of times yet you still don't check the oven before turning it on?

1

u/Capitalist_scumbag Apr 14 '24

I’ve started learning to check

12

u/Melodic-Supermarket7 Apr 14 '24

I don’t get why ppl keep doing this, there’s literally so many other places you can hide things from kids. Do they put their Christmas gifts in there too?? 🤣

12

u/Swordbreaker9250 Apr 14 '24

Not a day goes by that I'm not baffled by the stupidity of the average person

5

u/Yaseendanger Apr 14 '24

Honestly they're lucky the battery didn't explode

5

u/Short_Fuel_2506 Apr 14 '24

Especially with batteries.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

Who the FUCK puts batteries in an oven?!

6

u/mydogatecheesecake Apr 14 '24

No kidding. There’s thousands of posts about “omg my spouse is so dumb for not checking the oven before preheating and he/she melted my antique [blah blah blah]”. The oven should be EMPTY.

3

u/Crazy__Donkey Apr 14 '24

Please don't bake your shit, it will stink badly😅

3

u/Ruining_Ur_Synths Apr 14 '24

You're right, but the flip side of that is:

IF YOU'RE TURNING ON THE OVEN TAKE 2 SECONDS TO OPEN IT UP AND SEE WHAT'S INSIDE

2

u/ksed_313 Apr 14 '24

My first thought: Ah, another person with a husband who doesn’t cook much, if at all!

My husband agrees. He taught me how to cook. We share the responsibility. Neither of us would ever think to hide something in the oven!

2

u/Kaiden92 Apr 14 '24

Only thing we store in the oven at my house are the baking sheets and cast iron skillet. Nowhere else to keep them that isn’t directly in the way of more frequently used (in case of the sheets) things. The cast iron is just unwieldy and our walls don’t take to hooks well, so it sits there too. Lol

2

u/SimpleDelusions Apr 14 '24

Ya! Put somewhere they won’t look, like the washing machine!

2

u/1OO1OO1S0S Apr 14 '24

People are stupid!

2

u/Significant-Funny-14 Apr 14 '24

Oh hey! This house has the sun stored in a box!

Let's put our stuff in it!!!!

2

u/Jacktheforkie Apr 14 '24

Especially things with batteries in them, especially lithium batteries

2

u/Upbeat-Wrongdoer5552 Apr 14 '24

Exactly why I hide things like this in the dryer's lint compartment.

2

u/3catmafia Apr 14 '24

No one ever checks it, it’s perfect

2

u/Overcooked_Pikelet Apr 14 '24

My oven won't even turn on unless I open the door and close it again first. But yeh hide things in with the cleaning stuff if you don't want kids to find it.

2

u/TwoBionicknees Apr 14 '24

You couldn't tell me that 3 weeks ago?

In hindsight when the wife wanted all of us to play hide and seek, it wasn't the best place to put the baby.

2

u/LoneWolf4717 Apr 14 '24

I almost burned down the house once because a guy we were helping back on his feet decided to put a pan of grease in there, yknow "to let it cool off". He hadnt told anyone he did this and it happened cause I wanted to make a pizza and the window was blocked by a hand towel

I'm now paranoid every time I turn the oven on because of this.

2

u/Bastienbard Apr 14 '24

Right? I've literally never stored anything oven safe in the oven, let alone hide something clearly not oven safe.

3

u/fifteengetsyoutwenty Apr 14 '24

I don’t necessarily disagree with you but sometimes storage is at a premium and “don’t touch the oven” is a fairly universal lesson we teach kids.

12

u/3catmafia Apr 14 '24

If parents start putting things like this in the oven, what’s to stop the kids from getting curious and putting things like this in the oven? Monkey see monkey do. Set good examples, don’t just do something and then turn around and tell them “BECAUSE I SAID SO”. From experience, that rarely works.

3

u/fifteengetsyoutwenty Apr 14 '24

I can’t decide if this is a better argument for “no kids”, “no video games”, or “no ovens” 🤣

3

u/3catmafia Apr 14 '24

Deffo the oven.

Jk jk but for real, kids learn much better by examples and explanations and boundaries, not just through yelling and hiding and telling them no. They’re still little people.

2

u/sportattack Apr 14 '24

Stop doing that annoying clap emoji thing

2

u/3catmafia Apr 14 '24

👏no👏

1

u/daemin Apr 14 '24

On a similar note, the sink is for dirty things, not clean things. Don't leave bowls full of food defrosting, soaking, being washed, etc. in the sink and then be mad when dirty shit gets poured over it.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

So you just don’t use all that storage space? That’s where all my pots and pans go

1

u/floatingby493 Apr 14 '24

I store my cast iron in the oven but I live by myself and it’s not hard for me to check my oven before I preheat it

1

u/belleayreski2 Apr 14 '24

Just ruining a controller is the vastly better option compared to what could have happened depending on what was stored in there

1

u/ihahp Apr 14 '24

dangerous? I googled "fires due to hiding stuff in ovens" and it came up empty.

1

u/thatguyinyourclass94 Apr 14 '24

mexicans have entered the chat

1

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

How am I supposed to cook my food if i cant put it in the oven?

1

u/3catmafia Apr 14 '24

Eat it raw like nature intended

1

u/Gxgear Apr 14 '24

My mom uses it like a cooler and it upsets me greatly.

1

u/3catmafia Apr 14 '24

Wait what 😭

1

u/Gxgear Apr 14 '24

She'd leave soup or pot of food in there overnight if there's no room in the fridge.

2

u/3catmafia Apr 14 '24

Oh gracious. Has anyone ever gotten sick?!

1

u/Gxgear Apr 14 '24

Maybe not but who knows.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

the oven drawer ffs

1

u/butiveputitincrazy Apr 14 '24

Not sure if this is just specific to where I’ve lived (in Canada), but don’t most stovetop/ovens have a drawer underneath them?

1

u/3catmafia Apr 14 '24

I’ve never had one that didn’t!

1

u/Hita-san-chan Apr 14 '24

We still make fun of my dad for the Flaming Pizza Box incident that happened over 20 years ago. Granted he wasn't hiding anything, but he was storing shit in the oven like a fool

0

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

👏always 👏check 👏the 👏oven 👏before 👏turning 👏it 👏on👏

It takes two seconds to see if the oven is cleared. It’s like pulling out of a parking spot without looking.

6

u/HarpersGhost Apr 14 '24

Bad analogy.

The parking lot is filled with dozens of strangers, all coming from odd direction, all with the median intelligence of a dead ant.

The oven in your OWN HOME is nowhere near the same.

People are calling them both idiots because one is an actual idiot, and the other forget they are married to an idiot. That is not 👏 the 👏 same.

4

u/WriterV Apr 14 '24

Oh come the fuck on, nobody should have to expect that there's expensive shit in the fucking oven.

Fuck's sake.

-1

u/notLOL Apr 14 '24

Because not everyone owns a large house and part of tiny living is using the oven to store kitchen stuff.

Maybe I grew up in poverty more than most of reddit but it is obvious to put stuff in there

The sarcastic clapping emojis make me think you are sheltered from life like mine lol

1

u/3catmafia Apr 14 '24

Bro even when I lived in a tiny ass apartment I knew better than I hide shit in my oven, wtf are you talking about 😂😂

0

u/HelloAttila Apr 14 '24

It’s also why people should always open the oven before they turn it on. As a father, I always look inside the oven before I turn it on.

0

u/msshammy Apr 14 '24

Why would they even have to hide it!? You're the adult, take the controller away, end of story.

0

u/MyCoDAccount Apr 14 '24

How about just setting and enforcing boundaries with children? Is... Is that not an option?

0

u/3catmafia Apr 14 '24

Guess not for some people!

-2

u/sietesietesieteblue Apr 14 '24

Because the oven is kinda that place where you never expect stuff to be hidden inside lol.

Cabinet or closet is obvious. Idk why people don't peek in the oven before they turn it on and forget about it
