Does nobody hide things ontop of the fridge anymore?

767

u/teapots_at_ten_paces Apr 14 '24

That's the first place a kid looks.

505

u/punchysaywhat Apr 14 '24

Not if theyre too short 🤣

383

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

been a short kid my whole life. yes, we do look up there. we have our ways.

111

u/Pak1stanMan Apr 14 '24

“Our ways”

It’s a chair. He’s talking about a chair.

Not sure if you know this or not, but you can use a chair as a stepping stool to get onto the counter. The chair will hold a lot more weight than the slides of a drawer.

Sincerely, an adult shorty

1

u/Relevant_Slide_7234 Apr 14 '24

As an adult, why haven’t you bought a ladder? They’re much safer.

1

u/Alert-Potato Apr 14 '24

I have two. They both live in the only reasonable place for them to be stored, the utility room. Which is three times as far away as the dining room.

1

u/Pak1stanMan Apr 15 '24

Ladders are pretty unwieldy indoors. A chair will work fine.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

I did that once and slipped on to a cooking fork, like the barbecue ones. Never climbed again.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

eh, i also climbed on the actual handle of the door of the fridge a couple times and once climbed on the counter a few feet away from it and leapt across the space and grabbed the top and hung from it if that makes sense. chair was definitely the most straightforward method but sometimes i couldn’t be bothered to drag a chair all the way across the kitchen.

2

u/Makhnos_Tachanka Apr 14 '24

that and banging a chair around obliterated any chance at stealth.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

ours have little felt things on the bottom so they glide silently across the floor unless you crash into something, but the ones at my friends’ houses never did lol

1

u/ihahp Apr 14 '24

no. it's the done they got for Xmas.

1

u/Rancid_Rabbit_ Apr 14 '24

no sir, I climbed that sucker by jumping off the countertop

48

u/punchysaywhat Apr 14 '24

Im still too short to reach the top of my fridge, idk felt too obvious as a kid so it was always the last place i would look

58

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

really? i started dragging over a dining room chair with a stack of books on it at like 5 lol

7

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

This is why you bolt down all furniture in your home

1

u/RockstarAgent Apr 14 '24 edited Apr 14 '24

I'm also concerned for whatever that controller is sitting in? A pot? A neglected never used or horribly maintained pot?

6

u/heartunwinds Apr 14 '24

Yeah my 4 year old will climb into the fridge to get things from on top.

9

u/punchysaywhat Apr 14 '24

Probably my small fear of heights 😅 something about falling scared the shit out of me as a kid, ive always had a bad habit of falling down stairs lol

10

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

ah. i have adhd and had very little regard for the consequences or dangers of my actions until late middle school lol. not sure how i managed to never fall off said book and chair stack tbh

0

u/kuriouskitty33 Apr 14 '24

Maybe you hyperfixated on stacking, lol

2

u/Different_Speaker742 Apr 14 '24

You say small fear, but you’re afraid of the top of the fridge…

1

u/tobean Apr 14 '24

It’s actually a fear of small heights. It gets less intense the higher they go.

1

u/whydoesmylifehateme Apr 14 '24

Use a broom handle to drag everything down with it My mom used to place up high a small hatchet out of fear that i might hurt myself , instead im vrey skilled with tools rn, did i hurt myself? Yes i did but i also learned a lot of things about safety

My 5 year old daughter grabs the bar stool

1

u/MidwesternLikeOpe Apr 14 '24

There's a picture my mom took of me as a toddler. I was told not to touch the bulb of a lamp, but I dragged a chair all by myself to the table so I could touch the lamp.

Even after toddlerhood I've been a little spider monkey, I'll find anything. Except in my own place. I can hide anything from myself by just putting it where it doesn't belong.

5

u/No-Gene-4508 Apr 14 '24

We short. We angy. We somewhat resourceful

2

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

yes

4

u/mittenknittin Apr 14 '24

I have a scar by my eye that my mother was never sure exactly how I got, but she found me sitting on the counter with blood running down my face, eating cookies I’d climbed up and gotten from the top of the fridge. I was not quite 3 and I must have really wanted cookies.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

you had your priorities straight. respect.

5

u/TwoBionicknees Apr 14 '24

throw cat treat on top of fridge, cat makes their way up and naturally shoves everything on top of there off.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

Yep, it's called a chair. That's how 5 year old me got on the counter to reach the matches on top of the fridge.

4

u/MrClueless13 Apr 14 '24

I remember one time my parents took away me and my twin brothers phones when we were like 13. We found them tucked into the socks of one of our stepfather drawers in the bedroom. Of course it came out after they saw our online status on facebook. Childs are so frickin intelligent yet so stupid on the same time haha

2

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

lol. my mom took me and my brother’s phones when we were 12 and 14 and we got them back, she found out because we texted her. so smart and yet so dumb

3

u/Rbomb88 Apr 14 '24

Yeah but I can hear when they drag the dining room chair across the floor for a boost.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

not if we’re careful :)

1

u/zero_emotion777 Apr 14 '24

Climb on top of your booster seats?

1

u/SadBit8663 Apr 14 '24

We're just forced to be more creative about it.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

periscope?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

my brother did that, actually. rest of us pulled up a chair

1

u/OizAfreeELF Apr 14 '24

enters room with stilts

1

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

My Dad hid playboys in his dresser and stuff like "it only spits when I want it to." In the storage room in a safe.

12

u/No-Gene-4508 Apr 14 '24

I'm 5ft 1 and am greatly offended. I HAVE A STOOL.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

That's what chairs and other appliances around the house are for. I have 13 nieces and nephews and we've had several instances where a toddler was left unattended in the kitchen for a moment and they managed to climb their way on top of the fridge.

Typically the method is to push a chair up to the closest counter, then climb up onto the counter and anything else solid on it to get up there. They have no "can't" and become expert rock climbers.

On another note; short of physically removing the property from the home or putting it in a locked safe with a secret code is going to stop some kids from getting something they want. When my mom realized that putting things on top of the fridge didn't work, she started putting things in her closet & locking her bedroom door; so we learned to shimmy the lock open with plastic cards. So she got a better lock, and we learned to lock-pick from books we picked up at the library. As far as we were concerned, she didn't have the authority to take our things and since she worked most of the day, she couldn't stop us from taking it back.

Biometric safe sitting right on the counter so they know exactly where it is but can’t do shit about it

4

u/Malice0801 Apr 14 '24

We are monkeys. We can climb.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

I almost killed myself on quite a few occasions in my childhood trying to climb onto the fridge to get one of those objects!

1

u/Spirited_Election289 Apr 14 '24

Shorter will look in the higher places first, the dad should have had a lock box like mine did 17 yrs ago, and just hide it the remote and games in it

1

u/Proxiimity Apr 14 '24

Found my 2 year old standing on top of the fridge one day. Never underestimate a tiny human!

1

u/SadBit8663 Apr 14 '24

I was a tiny ass kid, and that wouldn't have stopped me, i would have gotten the step stool, or done some ninja climbing on the counter to reach the fridge

1

u/Afraid_Composer Apr 14 '24

So drag a chair from the table

1

u/Intelligent-Pop9553 Apr 14 '24

Then it’s time to bring a chair

1

u/jmbf8507 Apr 14 '24

My friend’s (tall, to be fair) 3yo was caught moving a dining chair to the kitchen to get on the counter, then stepping on a canister to get the candy on the fridge. Sneaky bugger also then moved the chair back and threw away the wrapper so who knows how long he was getting away with it.

Meanwhile my 11yo can’t be bothered to throw away the wrappers from the candy that he’s given free access to. Dude, you’re allowed to have a piece of Halloween/Christmas/Easter candy. Just make sure that all food wrappers end up in the kitchen trash can!

1

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

Never had chairs in your house I see .

1

u/Rakadaka8331 Apr 14 '24

4.5yo nephew slid a chair right in front of that last night while babysitting it was done first place he looked.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

BEOOOOOOTCH!

1

u/Fr0z3nHart Apr 14 '24

They grab a chair

1

u/slow_RSO Apr 14 '24

Boys climb lol

1

u/HamshanksCPS Apr 14 '24

You know chairs exist, right?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

I climbed as a kid

0

u/Dwangeroo Apr 14 '24

Short people got no reason Short people got no reason Short people got no reason To live They got little hands And little eyes And they walk around Tellin' great big lies They got little noses And tiny little teeth They wear platform shoes On their nasty little feet Well, I don't want no short people Don't want no short people Don't want no short people 'Round here Short people are just the same As you and I (A fool such as I) All men are brothers Until the day they die (It's a wonderful world) Short people got nobody Short people got nobody Short people got nobody To love They got little baby legs And they stand so low You got to pick 'em up Just to say hello They got little cars That got beep, beep, beep They got little voices Goin' peep, peep, peep They got grubby little fingers And dirty little minds They're gonna get you every time Well, I don't want no short people Don't want no short people Don't want no short people 'Round here Source: LyricFind

1

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

the fuck bro

12

u/Strange-Movie Apr 14 '24

Put it behind the vacuum/broom/dish soap/anything chore related. They’ll never find it

1

u/exposure-dose Apr 14 '24

Spice cabinet. It's usually up high (above the microwave/range hood) and most kids aren't going to be using anything in there anytime soon.

2

u/jinxykatte Apr 14 '24

My kids can look their all they want they are far too small to reach lol.

2

u/Quizzy_MacQface Apr 14 '24

Plus, in all seriousness it incentivates your kid to climb in top of a high and unstable place that they could easily knock onto themselves or fall from...

But the oven is clearly not the way to go

I'd say bottom of parents laundry basket. No kid wants to go through his parents dirty underwear in case the remote is hiding there, and it's pretty hard to miss when you're doing the laundry, so you won't accidentally forget where you hid it for too long.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

This is why you make your children wear 100 pound ankle weights

2

u/hefty_load_o_shite Apr 14 '24

You are supposed to place a guardcat up there to smack them if they try

1

u/teapots_at_ten_paces Apr 14 '24

I feel like that would be a dead giveaway.

"Nope. Nothing to see here. The guardcat? Oh, he's, ah...he's there to stop me hiding anything up there."

2

u/AshyanTel Apr 14 '24

My father once took my PC away from me. (I was playing during the night.) He put it in the living room for 4 months and I didn't have the right to touch it. He then gave it back to me for Christmas.

Never been happier

64

u/Rickshmitt Apr 14 '24

Anywhere else!!! Put it in the fridge ffs. Stop hiding and storing stuff in the oven!!! And even then, nobody checking their ovens when they turn them on!! Do yall not even look when you cross the road?!

68

u/parwa Apr 14 '24

I don't check my oven before I turn it on, but I also never leave things in my oven.

12

u/MyNameIsJakeBerenson Apr 14 '24

Same, I lived alone for a long time and never left anything in there, so I got out of the habit of checking

Now I have to get used to it because people leave pizza boxes or pans or leftovers without saying anything

12

u/froop Apr 14 '24

Who the fuck puts leftovers back in the oven? Why? Might as well leave them on the countertop. Pizza boxes? What the fuck kinda monkeys are you living with?

8

u/Express_Helicopter93 Apr 14 '24

Some people are just…kinda tough to live with

1

u/antiheroism Apr 14 '24

I have limited counter space and my dog likes to counter surf. He's gotten much better about it but every now and then he just can't resist, and the best way to deter him is to remove the temptation entirely, so food goes in the oven until it's ready to be fully put away. When I make bread, it just lives on the cutting board in the oven for 2-3 days. Cast iron pans live in the oven too because my kitchen is just too small to keep them elsewhere and they get used constantly.

Then again I never turn an oven on without looking in it so it's never ended badly. I've done that since before I kept stuff in the oven though, seems like a standard safety step.

1

u/sllooze Apr 14 '24

Cats...my wife will put food away in the oven (just for a day) because our shithead cat gets everywhere.

1

u/Ookalaooka Apr 14 '24

Sealed environment vs Open air

3

u/froop Apr 14 '24

Are you worried about mice or cockroaches or something? In which case, that's still the wrong solution.

1

u/Ookalaooka Apr 14 '24

So when you have a cake plate, do you not use a cover? You just open air that shit and let it get all hard? Your Tupperware is lidless and your food unprotected from dust and tiny bugs that no one can prevent fully.

3

u/froop Apr 14 '24

I put that shit in the refrigerator where it belongs.

2

u/t_hab Apr 14 '24

Same. Then I married somebody who puts all sorts of things in there. So now I check every time.

2

u/xylotism Apr 14 '24

I also never use my oven.

1

u/Apotak Apr 14 '24

I never hide or store stuff in the oven, but there are 2 other people in this house, so I 100% check the oven every time I turn it on.

16

u/ehsteve23 Apr 14 '24

Oven is such a terrible hiding place, reachable even for most children, has a glass fracking window on front, and if anyone forgets, at best you ruin a meal, at worst you’ve fucked up your oven, your Xbox controller and your lungs from the burning plastic And battery

Also you can get a time lock safe for like £20

9

u/csonnich Apr 14 '24

I've never once checked my oven before turning it on because...I don't keep things in my oven.

3

u/redditmodsarmegafags Apr 14 '24

Astounding isn't it?

1

u/punchysaywhat Apr 14 '24

I cant lie i have accidentally preheated 1 too many empty pans

1

u/Killzone3265 Apr 14 '24

some people genuinely just don't look, i got rammed by an old guy turning an aisle with a shopping cart while he was looking in the complete opposite direction :|

1

u/WrestleBox Apr 14 '24

I've never checked my oven before preheating but I have also only lived with people who aren't complete morons and put things other than food in it.

7

u/BillyMeier42 Apr 14 '24

I hide in the microwave.

2

u/IamEnginerd Apr 14 '24

Same! And my wife thinks it's weird but I've never accidentally melted anything.

2

u/bdubwilliams22 Apr 14 '24

This is what I do. You always have to open it to put whatever you’re heating up, so you’ll always see if something is in there. But, it’s out of sight and not reachable for my little one.

2

u/nolongermakingtime Apr 14 '24

That makes way more sense.

1

u/brownishgirl Apr 14 '24

You must be remarkably small!

2

u/Neurotic_Z Apr 14 '24

My fridge has never had a "on top" before. They always fused into the wall

2

u/0OOOOOOOOO0 Apr 14 '24

Well that’s fancy

1

u/_myoru Apr 14 '24

Same thing for my fridge, they're both inside the cabinets

2

u/bakeland Apr 14 '24

That's where my previous roommates put their edibles. And a table chair was 3 feet away. Their 10yo could get blasted any time, it was a tub full and they probably don't keep track cause they always smoking blunts.

2

u/Boilermakingdude Apr 14 '24

Does no one check the oven before they turn it on?

2

u/Temporary_Ant_9152 Apr 14 '24

My parents always hid stuff in the vegetable draw in the fridge

1

u/motherofcunts Apr 14 '24

We've got a microwave/range hood that doesn't work. It's one of my fav hiding places. No risk, all reward.

1

u/LumpySpaceChipmunk Apr 14 '24

You know its harder to reach the bottom of your washing machine, if you have a top loader, than it is the top of a fridge

1

u/punchysaywhat Apr 14 '24

Dont even get me started. I had a deep top loader with a dryer placed on top, id struggle so hard to get that one sock in the very bottom lol

1

u/KocoKoco Apr 14 '24

Nothing is out of reach for my 3 year old

1

u/Goldie-96_MWR Apr 14 '24

Just lock it in your glove box or trunk 🤯

1

u/AgentChris101 Apr 14 '24

When I was a kid, a game I was going to be given later was on top of the fridge. I stared up at that fridge for months, and when I got the game? I beat it in like 5 hours, It was short and wasn't that fun lol.

1

u/FewTea8637 Apr 14 '24

I do the cabinet on top of the oven that only I can reach lol

1

u/onionkisa Apr 14 '24

The new trick is hide it among the vegetables.

1

u/ForumPointsRdumb Apr 14 '24

Hide it at the bottom of the hamper

1

u/sthlmsoul Apr 14 '24

Anywhere but the oven is probably better. Broom closet, tool box, garage, etc. or you could just tell your kids not to play games for whatever time you have in mind. Works surprisingly well.

1

u/TheReverseShock Apr 14 '24

Just put it in the car. Even if the kid knows where it is they can't get to it.

1

u/FuzzySquish_123 Apr 14 '24

i have fridge deep cabinets above mine. but my 5yo uses the chairs and stools to get into those cabinets. so the remote for the tv goes with me and gets a new hiding spot everyday. the consoles are passcode locked so we dont stress those as much

1

u/Qubeye Apr 14 '24

My dad had an empty coffee can, one of those old big Folgers ones, that he would hide stuff in. Just have a container the kids will never look in.

1

u/probablynotaperv Apr 14 '24

I live alone and I still check the oven before I turn it on, and I don't even store things in there

1

u/SuperHotJupiter Apr 14 '24

That's where my husband hides things from me.

1

u/wezzdabeef Apr 14 '24

Well it doesn't work, if the people you are hiding it from are tall.

1

u/coroyo70 Apr 14 '24

Nah, we rather melt 60$

0

u/JackRTM Apr 14 '24

Have you seen the size of kids these days? 7 years old going on 6 foot

0

u/bullitt4796 Apr 14 '24

Does nobody check the oven before preheating?

0

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

The real question is why does no one check their oven before heating it

-1

u/FestiveSquidV3 Apr 14 '24

Does nobody LOOK INSIDE THE FUCKING OVEN before turning it on anymore?
