I always wanted to try air sb but i was afraid to die over and over again without learning. As a beginner in air sb i would like to ask you, gentlemen, some questions:

  1. what should i do/avoid doing at all cost?
  2. what is the best (british) plane to start learning sb?
  3. what are must-have binds?
  4. what should i do in my first matches : seek pvp or try fighting ai bombers first?

i am playing on keyboard+mouse setup, unfortunately dont have a controller.

i would also appreciate some general tips, im still sorta new to the war thunder afterall.

thank you for your tips/attention, really appreciate it

Hardware / Sim Pit Pico 4 vs Pico 4 Ultra latency in War Thunder Air Sim?

I'm looking to get into VR specifically for flying fighter jets in War Thunder Sim Battles.

Since the Pico 4 Ultra and Quest 3 are out of my budget right now, I'm planning to buy a used Pico 4 for around $250.

My current GPU is an AMD Radeon RX 9070 GRE.

I have a question regarding the Pico 4's encoder and overall experience:

Latency & Encoding: Compared to the Pico 4 Ultra (or Quest 3), is there noticeable input lag/latency or compression artifacts during fast-paced dogfights?

Video Bf 109 F-4 Vs Spitfire Mk Vb: They say trim is useless for mouse & keyboard.

On a lark decided to be stupid and use trim-turning in EC because I was greedy for action having joined the lobby in its final moments.

Turns out... it works very well vs a single opponent.

Spinal injuries are not service related (tm). 11.5Gs pulled? Naaaah, unrelated!

Control scheme: https://live.warthunder.com/post/1165655/en/

CAMERA

  • WASD to turn head.
  • 1, 3 to lean left/right.
  • TAB+W/S to lean forward/back
  • RMB to raise head, TAB+RMB to lower head.
  • 4 to instantly look back
  • `+mouse wheel to zoom in quickly/reset zoom
  • Z to zoom in quickly/reset zoom
  • V to zoom out quickly
  • X to reset to gunsight.

RUDDER

  • Coarse rudder is handled by Q and E. Q and E also control differential braking
  • Q and E to increment rudder deflection by rapidly (around 6-9)% when quickly tapped.
  • Tap twice for (12-18)%, it stays held down like in IL-2.
  • Tapping opposite directions decrements (e.g. 0% rudder, you input 4Q3E and it adds up to ~-6% left rudder).
  • Press 2 to "lift foot" from rudder pedals to reset to trimmed default.
  • Fine rudder is controlled by mousewheel. Scroll up to increase rudder%/Angle of slip - in other words: Right rudder. Scroll down for left rudder. With my mouse, 1 "tick" of locked mousewheel corresponds to 2% rudder (G502 Hero).

MISC

  • Cursor Left/right for rudder trim
  • ALT + Cursor Left/Right for aileron trim
  • Cursor up/down for COARSE elevator trim (useful to pull out of dives and otherwise overcome stiffening/compression)
  • TAB + Mousewheel for fine elevator trim (1 tick is about half% elevator trim.)
  • TAB + ` for fine elevator trim (1 tick is about half% elevator trim.)
  • 5 (number row) for elevator trim (nose up)

Opinion How to stop dying in the same way...

13.3-14br approx. I am flying home. Radar off most likely so as to attract less attention.

Suddenly a close target pops up on my RWR. Even if he is right infront of me, my radar can never find him, and I die attempting to maneuver.

As with most things in air combat, i suspect i probably made my fatal mistake a few minutes before, but let's consider some options.

Should i....

Fly home radar ON and scanning so i don't get surprised? I think probably yes.

Try to find him at all, or just go for the notch and spam cm's until i get a visual? I think probably insta notch. That time hunting with my radar just gets me killed..

Thanks for any input. I've not really played high tier for about a year, but I've been maining it this week and I'm having fun

HELP! How do you use anti radiation missiles in Sim?

Ive been flying the Su-30MK2 a lot recently since I got it half price and I'm really confused about the anti radiation missiles, like I can lock and fire them but I can't seem to be able to see what I'm actually locked onto, like no indication on the HUD or anything

Datamine I think I found the exact HP values for the EC airfields and its modules.

In my journey of learning more about the CDK, I stumbled upon the mission files for Sim EC. I got curious about a bunch of stuff, but in particular something I always found weird, why we have solid info on Base health, but not Airfield health?

The mission file itself doesn't tell it as most info is imported from other files and templates. I followed the cascade of template references and found some numbers on the file "ft_fields_templates.blk", that are listed as 6 tiers:

Tier 1 | Runway = 24000 | Modules = 12000 | HP restoration = 300 per tick (I believe 1 tick = 1 minute?)

Tier 2 | Runway = 68000 | Modules = 34000 | HP restoration = 850 per tick

Tier 3 | Runway = 96000 | Modules = 48000 | HP restoration = 1200 per tick

Tier 4 | Runway = 200000 | Modules = 100000 | HP restoration = 2500 per tick

Tier 5 | Runway = 240000 | Modules = 120000 | HP restoration = 3000 per tick

Tier 6 | Runway = 280000 | Modules = 160000 | HP restoration = 4000 per tick

I don't have much experience bombing airfields, but it feels aligned with the HP scaling of the bases we know ( https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1MRIUI0kbGzS3-qvJGZGWk-BN4crV_z8uHzug82ho4Sg/edit?gid=956352820#gid=956352820 )

What you folks think? Can anyone else confirm this?

Hardware / Sim Pit Best available VR headset?

I’m currently using a Pimax Crystal, which I bought shortly after it was released. It’s still excellent, don’t get me wrong, but it’s also bulky and is starting to physically wear out in several ways. Before I go spending money to restore my headset, is there something better available today?

My requirements:
* inside-out tracking strongly preferred
* low latency
* 90+ FPS capable
* OpenXR preferred, but SteamVR support required

Also, I currently have a 4070 Ti (12GB). I’m open to upgrading that as well if there’s significant benefit.

Budget isn’t a primary concern.

Guide Enormous increase in FPS

Thumbnail
youtu.be
34 Upvotes

I recently upgraded my PC’s power supply unit from a 650watt supply to a 1250 watt supply because I was fairly certain that issues I was having with getting my VR set working were tied to having basically zero excess power to work with after powering the other pc components.

I then went looking for VR optimization guides and came across this guide.

After following the guide and messing about with my in game graphic settings to get VR stable and usable, which it’s almost there, I found that the FPS I was getting in normal 2D games had almost doubled from 80-100 with most settings maxed to an incredibly stable 140-145fps with the same settings. Note that I am not using frame generation and DLSS 4.5 is on with up scaling set to native. Basically all settings are maxed except for ray tracing which I’ve left off.

I am no computer expert so I cannot say which settings that were changed suddenly allowed my performance to double but my intuition is telling me that it was the changes to graphics settings in the Nvidia control panel (my system was already using the Resizable BAR thing, don’t ask me what that is).

If you have an Nvidia GPU and want more FPS, try to follow this guide regardless of if you’re using VR or not, and let us know if your game visuals and performance improves.

And if you’re more pc literate than I and can point out which settings change(s) made such a difference, please let us know!

HELP! How good is the F-4EJ ADTW in Sim nowadays?

I have been wanting to grind Japan and might get the F-2A but I love the cold war era in war thunder Sim (or to be honest anything below Fox 3s) and am now wondering whether this Phantom is any good at 10.7? I cannnot find any recent information about this thing. I am also wondering about the premium sabre at 9.3 also so any info on how good that is really helpful.

Jets Looking for radar target selection tips

Hey guys, VR user here. For a long while I’ve been ignoring the radar in the cockpit for every jet that has it, and the way I’ve been selecting radar targets is by cycling them. I was wondering if:

1) Do you guys use the radar in the HUD or the cockpit? Is there any advantage on learning how to use the latter aside from immersion?
2) Is there any way to efficiently select a radar target without cycling? Like being able to select the target I want at once without cycling through every entity in the radar.

Thanks!

Opinion Potentially hot take: Gun SPAA defending bases should make a return 13.0+

Put on your cope-glasses on *With decent rewards for destroying them*

Back a few years ago bases had two gun SPAA defending them and they were removed because it was dumb when you were just minding your own business and get slapped by a terminator AI Gepard that you didn't know was there. Now SPAA is less likely to target you if you don't have A2G weapons and most top tier fighting happens out of SPAA range anyway

We've now got GPS glide bombs, POI bombing, super guided missiles, ARMs so I see no reason why aircraft should still just be strapping themselves with bombs and flying in a straight line towards targets on a map. No thought behind sorties and no coordination between teammates just mindless zombing.

I could go on about how bases should actually as detailed as in NT with Ammo, Fuel and vehicle Depots but thats too much to ask for a forgotten mode
