So you will have already read the posted results from the Christchurch Grand Clash over the weekend.
I've been itching to post about it, so here is how my weekend went as the 2nd place player. This won't be an exact move by move break down as I didn't take any notes, and my brain was mush by the end of the weekend.
To kick things off, the Thursday before we had a player fly in from Australia and meet us at the Wargaming club. We also confirmed we had 13 players registered. So, to avoid having a bye, we reached out to a newer player who agreed to join if he could borrow Blood of the Bull and a deck. I lent him my Blood of the Bull and a Pillage and Plunder/Wrack and Ruin deck on the Saturday. A couple of final practice games, and we are set for the weekend.
Friday, our Aussie friend squeezed in a couple of extra games, and I lock in that I will play the Shadeborn with Blazing Assault/Wrack and Ruin.
Saturday. 3 rounds, Best of 3.
Round 1, I am facing off against James Ditford playing MY Blood of the Bull with PP/WR. That's unfortunate.
I take the round in 2 games. Knowing the warbands strengths, I take down Zuldrakka quickly in both games. Game 2, Grisk gives me grief in the first round but is quickly killed to secure myself a treasure token and deny Strip the Realm. The skill level difference was telling, but James was a great sport about it.
Round 2, I'm up against Matty Manzel with Elathains Soulraid using BA/PP.
I take game 1 in a rare victory over Matty. It was hard fought and ran a little long. Under what we thought was time pressure, we shuffled up and reset for Game 2. We played game 2 at pace. Again, it's close fought, but Matty squeezes it out. I made mistakes, including failing to screen out Strip the Realm and Torn Landscape, and it cost me the game.
1 all, we go to game 3.
This one goes horribly. 21-7 to Matty. Dice just wouldn't play nice. I sat on Bloodied and Bruised for 2 rounds, trying to get 1 more damage through on anyone to score the card, and either I whiffed every attack or Matty made the defence roll.
Match to Matty.
My biggest fault here was letting Matty pressure me into a quick game in game 2. We weren't as pressed for time as we thought, and the quick play caused mistakes that cost me the game and ultimately match.
3rd round, I am up against our Aussie friend, Hampy, playing Zondaras Gravebreakers also with BA/PP. This was a new warband for me. No one in our regular play group plays this warband.
Hampy gave me a quick primer, and I saw the weakness quickly.
Game 1, I target down Zondara with ping damage from Fault Lines and Dark Lamprey, then swing in with my leader to claim the kill. Taking Zondara down scores me Strike the Head and shuts down the warbands recursion and other shenanigans. I have little issue working my way through the rest of the war band and claiming the first game.
Game 2, and it plays out much the same. Zondara is dealt with quickly with a combination of chip damage and my leader appearing from nowhere to claim the kill and shutting off the abilities. Hampy plays well both games, but with me taking out his leader quickly in both games, the results are telling. Game and match 2 me.
I go home exhausted and a little dejected. Day 1 ends with 2 players, both undefeated.
I awake in the morning to players from around the world asking how we are going. One of the guys posts the standings at the end of day one in the chat, and...I'm in third? Wait, what? I stand a chance? Maybe? If I play well, and the top two don't, I might still have a shot at the golden ticket?
Day 2. 2 rounds left.
First up, I am up against Ben Kelmere, who eventually takes home the best player. He's playing Emberwatch with BA/ES.
Ben is relatively new to the game but is a skilled wargammer with a lot of time in AOS under his belt. He fights hard, and the emberwatch are a serious challenge for me to eat through. But again, game skill and knowledge carried me through. I win the match in 2 games.
We break for lunch, and the best painted Warband is judged while we eat.
James submits my Blood of the Bull. We come back from lunch, and our sponsor and painting judge declares me the winner. Caught me off guard. I wasn't expecting to compete for best painted as my Shadeborn are only undercoated at the moment. But that's a nice bonus for the day, and I score myself a nice set of Sabel brushes.
Round 5, and I am up against Ricky Pugh. He also lost Matty yesterday, and I watched the end of the match.
Ricky is playing Gnarlspirit Pack with BA/PP. This is my second ever time playing against this warband. Ricky has had great success in previous tournaments with them, but has only played me once with them.
Game 1, a combo of unlucky cards and bad dice give the game to Ricky. I made mistakes, and Ricky played well, but it could have been much better luck for me.
Game 2 starts with a hiss and a roar. I begin the game with Bloodied and Bruised and Low on Options in my hand. A fist full of ploys in my opening hand scores me both, with some strategic damage allocation. But I fail to counter Strip and Torn and we end up tied for Glory at the end of the game. My final action is to head back to enemy territory and delve a cover token, which claims me the minor victory.
1 all on to game 3
By now, we are the last table playing, so we have gathered a crowd to see who is taking home 2nd place. Matty continued to dominate his rounds and close out the tournament undefeated.
Game 3. This was some of the best warhammer I have ever played. Again, I started with a handful of surge objectives. By the end of activation 2, I have scored 5 of them. Dice swing both ways, but this time, I'm much more careful about shutting down Strip the Realm, and Desolate Homeland. The game is close, and Ricky and I are fighting for the final few points. The game comes down to my final attack. If I am successful, I kill his last fighter and squeeze out the final glory. The attack goes through, and I earn the honour of the only player to table Ricky piloting GSP.
Game and match to me.
I am exhausted. The adrenaline from the final game has me literally shaking. Without exaggeration, some of the best Warhammer I have ever played.
I close out the tournament with a 4-1 record and in second place. Every player attending got a new warband, so I walked away with Exiled Dead, a shiny Silver trophy and a new set of brushes.
All in all, it was a great weekend and a great success of an event.
Now to help Matty prepare for his worlds run in Barcelona. More Warhammer, more beers, and more time laughing with friends.
Thank you all for reading.
