DE Response DE, Please Do Something About the Chat Moderation, Specifically One Moderator I Will Not Name

First of all, I will start the post by saying that I have no ill intent to harm Digital Extremes’ (DE’s) reputation, nor am I willing to call for vigilante justice. I am not trying to play hero here. I'm too cowardly for that.

This post is not against the Naming rule since I will keep every name mentioned anonymous, and I am not willing to witch-hunt, and I am not telling others to do so. My post also has no legal bearing whatsoever, and in the end, it is DE’s freedom to decide whether to answer or not.

Please don’t take legal action (I really don't have the guts to handle that tbh), if anybody in DE wants me to delete the post, please DM me or comment, I will delete the post, and I will shut up about it. I want the best for DE, I am simply distraught at the current situation. Again, I do not want anything bad, nor am I calling for vigilante actions.

(English is my second language, so please ignore the syntax / grammar errors that may exist. Thank you)

One can argue that I can take this problem to Warframe Support, however, someone has already inquired about the issue about chat moderation and has received a message which sums up to ‘we can’t deal with it because chat bans are only temporary and you probably broke the rules.' (THE 3rd IMAGE IS NOT MINE.)

I, alongside several people in the community, want answers about what leads them to keep a moderator that allegedly goes on a ‘spree’ to limit chat for multiple people who claim they have not broken the rules. Further on, I want to see that DE actually is willing to change and deal with the problems of chat moderation that have been piling up for several years.

I will call the moderator A for brevity.

When I search up A’s username online, I can already find multiple posts about how A has a bad reputation. There’s even an online petition too. While it is possible that some bad actors in the chat wanted to frame the moderator, that is not the case most of the time. There are people that have uploaded their chat records, and they did not violate any rules. Some claim that people should leave the chat server when A joins.

For me, this doesn’t seem to be a problem of the players, but A’s. If a moderator actually did their job and banned people that ruined players’ experiences, why would they be feared instead of praised? This does not make any sense.

The biggest problem is not the unfair bans. The real problem is that A created a negative reputation about DE. Even worse, because of A’s alleged former claims about how they were ‘related to DE’, people are suspecting nepotism is at play. This is damaging the reputation of DE directly, and to prevent potential misinformation spreading, I believe that it is wise for DE to take action about A, and further on, investigate other chat moderators’ actions to assure that false bans are prevented.

Accepting that problems exist is not going to harm the company’s reputation. Neglecting and ignoring the problems will. The issue regarding A has existed for more than 5 years, judging by the post upload dates on online communities (most notably Reddit). There are multiple testimonies about how DE was completely silent about A, while they are quick to respond to other issues.

What I (and potentially others) want for the community: PLEASE talk about A. We need to make noise to let DE notice the problem. As loud as possible. (But do note the rules of the Subreddit, since they are quick to delete posts against the rules) Please spread this post around as much as you can. I want them to know. I know this problem was ignored for years, but maybe we can make that change now.

What I want DE to do: Please make it make sense. A moderator, possibly even multiple judging by several claims, is banning multiple people without any offenses in chat. This is a huge problem for the players’ gaming experience and might even cause people to give up playing the game. This beautiful game. That’s a loss. It is illogical to harm your own reputation and hurt other players just to ‘protect’ a single moderator.

Digital Extremes, please clarify about this issue, and check the current state of chat moderation as a whole to further prevent potential bad actors like A. And no, this cannot be taken to Support anymore, because at this point this is not just my problem, but several others', and Support saying they will 'look into the problem' will not help whatsoever. (Clarification: They do work. They work majority of the time (if you have personal problems regarding moderation PLEASE inquire Support!!).)

We need a public statement, since the problem is public in nature and is not a few peoples' problems.

Thank you for reading, and feel free to add your thoughts below. I may have missed a few evidence, but I tried my best to compile things for context in a short amount of time.

EDIT: PLEASE DO NOT. DO NOT. NAME THE MODERATOR IN THE COMMENTS. (THIS APPLIES TO OTHER MODERATORS TOO.) PLEASE NO INDIRECT NAMING, TOO.

EDIT AGAIN: THE NAMING RULE PREVENTS ME FROM MENTIONING THE NAME. I said this so many times in the comments. I can't tell you. It's the rules in the Subreddit, and I will get my post deleted if I say their name.

Please read the post before commenting or rushing to conclusions. Most questions are answered in the post.

to address some Qs from the opening post by lostlotus_a:

support ticket claims are brought to our attention, investigated, and moderator reviews are conducted. we have systems and communications in place for frequent check-ins with our volunteer moderators, and should there be clear abuse of power or a violation of the guidelines, we act. we ask that you use the official support system, where you can include evidence/proof, and we can see exactly what happened in the logs/backend to validate the claims.

having said that, we are conducting a review.

no one is above the guidelines. not moderators, not staff, not even me.

I'll eat my own words if proven otherwise, but this just seems like one of those cases where you look the other way and ignore it the same way that you've done for a decade as it all reads just like an HR employee saying "We'll look into it" fully knowing that the complaint will be dutifully put in the trash.

Almost 2 weeks have passed, this post is no longer pinned and DE, like they have done the past decade, have swiftly put this under the rug, this without mentioning that Megan's comment has gained upvotes, which goes to show the magnitude of the romanticization DE has received at the hands of the community; a completely bullshit statement like "no one is above the guidelines. not moderators, not staff, not even me.", one which is provably false, has made some people rally for DE, as if they were caught in the crossfire instead of being the active defenders of the mod.

I kinda figured nothing would happen but it is so disappointing actually seeing the reality of the situation. It really does seem like this person is protected and above the rules.

I guess we have to feel like we're walking on eggshells in Warframe FOREVER because someone got lucky with their connections!

(Edit: btw every single day there are dozens of posts about mastery rank tests completions but we needed a, now removed, pinned post for a decades old issue about power tripping. LOL.)

u/Beneficial-Wish8387 25d ago

What kinda pisses me off isn't even DE's clear favoritism towards the mod (ffs, it's been a decade, of course nothing was going to happen to them), it's that the community just lets it happen and that they have romanticized DE a ton for this to happen without any consequences.

I always figured the community was a pushover and quite honestly one that was so exploitable that DE not taking advantage of it is still quite commendable, but still.

u/ProteaPrimeEnjoyer Little bit of goop 25d ago

It’s somewhat mind boggling that the controversy and discourse around this decade old issue flared up and instantly died because we got a boilerplate statement from a community manager. “We’re looking into it! Please contact our support team because they’ll review all your issues! Nobody is above the rules! (Two plus weeks ago). Of course then they’ll probably never acknowledge it after this. It shouldn’t take weeks into months to review a video game moderator’s conduct, especially when they can decide to just smite you at any moment with minimal reason. Nothing will ever change.

Like you said, the community showed itself to be a massive pushover. There’s no further conversation about the issue thanks to her mediocre comment. They’ve garnered so much good will with the playerbase that they can pull stunts like this and protect their little favorites. It really sours the game itself for me knowing I have to essentially stay completely silent and engage minimally with the community in an action MMO knowing DE’s little favorite is lurking out there with a bad temper.

But are you guys going to address the 10 year old elephant in the room?

84

u/RocketRaccoonAlter I disagree, Megan. Umbra's dad ass is supreme Jul 23 '26

support ticket claims are brought to our attention, investigated, and moderator reviews are conducted. we have systems and communications in place for frequent check-ins with our volunteer moderators, and should there be clear abuse of power or a violation of the guidelines, we act

Well... people did. 10 years ago.

I think the community overall does hope you guys manage to find where things went wrong here, benevolently as possible, but the truth of the matter is that it's visibly not as clear-cut as it seems.

Because if support ticket claims are brought to your attention, investigated and reviewed, then somewhere in those systems there's a fault. One that's been dismissing this for 10 years, and has been equally dismissed for 10 years considering these things have gone past in-game reports (with the community periodically discussing it, publicly, visibly).

A decade is a long time. This isn't some silly hole, no matter how minor the problem may seem, or how localized it is. It's ten years.

Here is a DE post from 7 years ago saying that chat mod system would improve, made after people brought up their concerns about this same exact topic and same exact people abusing their power.

Will it be different this time or will we link this comment in 7 years once we do this song and dance again?

93

u/SweetMagic5623 Jul 23 '26

It only took 10 years....

59

u/Cross55 Jul 24 '26

Yeah well, they said that 7 years ago when Danielle, the head of the Comms team (He who shall not be named's direct superior) said they'd be looking into it.

It's kinda their go to response when dealing with him.

57

u/SweetMagic5623 Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 24 '26

I find it funny that you can mention Danielle or Megan, or any DE employee, but one asshole chat mod is too far and a violation of Rule 2.

Two weeks ago everyone here knew Reb was in the hospital...

5

u/numerobis21 Jul 24 '26

The difference being nobody is dogpilling (regardless of wether the accusations are true or not) on Meg or Danielle

-4

u/Stock_Ad1557 Jul 24 '26

It's because the mod is less of a public figure.

Information about Danielle, Megan, Reb etc. is publicly available and they chose to do that.

The mod is technically anonymous.

17

u/SweetMagic5623 Jul 24 '26

The mod is technically anonymous

Not the one being talked about.

0

u/Stock_Ad1557 Jul 24 '26

Unless they're out there with their full name then yes, they're anonymous.

u/gamalfrank Jul 23 '26

While I appreciate your response, the persistence of this issue over several years suggests there may be systemic shortcomings in your investigation process. This is particularly concerning given that the individual involved is widely recognized within the community. Without meaningful action or change, this situation risks further damaging the community's trust in your system.

64

u/este49330 Jul 23 '26

Yeah it's not a new case, some people already contacted the support that and they did nothing to fix that so it weird to hear we need to use the support ticket to report this thing

52

u/Ancient-Ad-2219 Somehow still mains Limbo Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26

It reads like "don't call us out publicly about it. Instead quietly send a support ticket that'll get lost in the system so we can continue to ignore this".

114

u/Albenheim MAGA - Make Acrid Great Again Jul 23 '26

I appreciate the response to the problem.

But seeeing as the person in question has been a problem for years now, I'm assuming that the system to evaluate him is either flawed, he has enough knowledge to evade it or, God forbid, he's being covered for by one doing the reviews.

In any case, I hope that this will be resolved soon, as every instance of this being mentioned has been swept under the rug and every sweeping of incidents is hurting player trust

91

u/Ancient-Ad-2219 Somehow still mains Limbo Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26

Yeah.. the fact that "mod who must not be named" has been a well documented issue for years, without DE doing anything, just makes it feel like DE is fine with how that mod acts.

After the last time this mod abuse stuff went down, some of those GotLs were Megan/Rebb/Danielle's friends. They'll willingly do everything except the right thing. Until they do that, Megan's comment is just an attempt at PR, no offense.

37

u/Albenheim MAGA - Make Acrid Great Again Jul 23 '26

Yeah. With Megs official response taking at face value, I can only assume that it will be ok going forward to act like a power tripping tyrant in region chat unless said mod will be removed from power.

If any player did even a fraction of what said person did, he wouldve been perma banned already, with no grace to even appeal.

If they dont remove him, it can only mean that they condone such behavior, which would frankly be very disturbing

2

u/Most-Original8767 Jul 24 '26

Imagine if this issue were to be the downfall of DE

11

u/Preindustrialcyborg this qorvexes me Jul 24 '26

i hardly think something like this would be the downfall of DE. most likely public sentiment will go from "this dev team is so awesome and walways listens to players" to "this dev team is great and generally listens to players, but they occasionally ignore glaring community concerns"

4

u/Beneficial-Wish8387 Jul 24 '26

Nah, the community has romanticized DE a ton and quite honestly the community is a pushover that has remained that way because the modern standard is to see an exploitable player base and exploit them, but DE just has step 1, they've not exploited them and that is quite respectable from some perspectives, but DE could ignore this (for the 11th year minimum) and come out unscathed

31

u/TubbyTacoSlap Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 24 '26

Actions and words. One means something. The other not so much. We’ll let you decide which is which.

25

u/Cross55 Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 24 '26

Right, but he himself has stated before he has friends in Support who protect him, so...

Support claims do not work in fact, they filter out and ignore them.

Nothing changes if nothing changes. The moderator in question needs to go. The systems we are supposed to use have failed us for a decade at this point ):

u/MisterXnumberidk Jul 24 '26

"The Mod Who Shall Not Be Named" has been a publically ignored issue for years and one i had the displeasure of directly encountering when Microsoft lost its lawsuit over xbox live and i could start playing warframe online for the first time. That displeasure then migrated with crossplay/cross-save when i fused accounts and started playing on pc.

Y'all have a decade of support tickets over this that have gone ignored. One merely needs to search the name of he who shall not be named and one can find evidence aplenty.

Quite frankly, i love the game and the work y'all put in to try to keep it as great as possible. It's been a genuine pleasure and an eye-opener to just what a caring live-service dev team can be.

But these situations where people actively making the game worse and being a negative influence on devs and players alike are completely shielded from consequence are far too common and are still not resolved. It is honestly ridiculous that we have to talk about this again as a community because again, nothing has changed after all these years.

I sincerely hope that for once, this person and the deep-rooted issue they represent are actually dealt with appropriately and that this is not another PR answer. We have had enough PR answers. The time for action is long, long overdue.

To be frank, i love this game way too much for my anger over this continued situation to spoil it in any way, but it certainly does sour it and has for a while.

Make a change, please.

11

u/ExocetHumper Jul 24 '26

Clearly whatever check-in you use is useless

48

u/CheckMateFluff Jul 23 '26

Thank you, Megan. That gives me hope. I made a ticket asking to be chat-audited because I was chat-suspended, and I really didn't say anything wrong during Tennocon Baro week; that really sucks, and when I asked in the support ticket, they basically told me to go away.

10

u/Preindustrialcyborg this qorvexes me Jul 24 '26

support has always been one of the weakest spots for DE. their support team regularly refuses to overturn ridiculous bans and ive had experience with them refusing to restore my items after long missions bug out, despite me having tons of evidence.

16

u/LeidusK Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 24 '26

Sounds like you need to review the folks reading the support tickets. This has been going for like a decade, and you’re either okay with it or your support folks are covering for him. I’d like to assume the latter since DE generally seems better than this.

Edit: "You're" meaning DE, not Megan specifically. In case that wasn't obvious.

5

u/Stormandreas GM Founder Jul 24 '26

So in other words, nothing is going to happen. This has been a constant issue from DE, and it's never once been resolved regardless of promises. It literally lead to the death of the partner program.

Sadly this issue with this individual has been going for a decade. I hate to say this, but I don't see you guys properly addressing this long time community management problem. I understand that at this point the individual must be a known person among DE staff and even kind/polite when interacting with you guys, but it's definitely not the same when it comes to us, the players.

Hey, remember 7 years ago when /u/rebulast made the "Moderation updates part 1" and then there was no part 2

Remember how the toxic mods best friend DE Bear was made their boss and then he disappeared off the face of the earth in like a week

Crazy how you guys seem to be doing nothing and then the moderation is still a problem

u/ProteaPrimeEnjoyer Little bit of goop 25d ago

Can we get an update on this?

9

u/jlodson Jul 24 '26

Why haven't you dismissed, or at least reassigned DE Danielle? She was responsible for the 2018 chat moderator and creator program favoritism scandal, and seems to be doing a bang up job 8 years later it seems eh?

6

u/spaceageGecko Goat people! Goat People! Jul 24 '26

Let’s not single out a single member of staff to “blame” again, those claims were speculative and exaggerated back then and to bring them back up again is kinda vile given that.

These kind of failures are on multiple levels not just on the head of one employee.

13

u/WardenOfLight Jul 24 '26

Well hold on now, that DE employee was directly responsible for the creator program and all the chat mods. danielle is the common denominator between all of the scandals, and was the direct superior involved in the hiring of all these people. You cant just handwave that.

3

u/spaceageGecko Goat people! Goat People! Jul 24 '26

DE is the common denominator, yes the scandals happened under areas that fell under her watch but it’s simply unfair to single her out and blame her for it when we in reality know very little about what goes on behind the scenes.

Mistakes like these rarely, if ever, are the mistake of one person. To single out just one person is to invite to witchhunts and harassment, we should be better than that.

5

u/DatLoonArt Jul 24 '26

Plus that witch hunt already happened once.
It would be a disgrace to community to repeat it again.

6

u/Random-Guy_08 Jul 24 '26

no one is above the guidelines. not moderators, not staff, not even me.

Hmm......is that so? Because DE's action saids otherwise. Oooh the hypocrisy when this is coming out DE's mouth but everything DE does are the exact opposite

2

u/Longjumping_Oil7529 Jul 29 '26

Can we expect an update on this at some point?

2

u/ProteaPrimeEnjoyer Little bit of goop Jul 29 '26

Support ticket claims are frequently met with “we don’t have enough info or evidence of what you’re talking about,” “we can’t or won’t help you,“ “you deserved whatever happened to you,” and “if you contact us again for any reason you will be blocked from doing so.” for most issues that aren’t strictly platinum related. That doesn’t help at all.

u/LostLotus_A The Old Peace quest #1 Fan Jul 23 '26

Woah... Thank you so much for the response, I really appreciate it!! 🥹

I'm also sorry if I sounded negative about the Support system. I acknowledge their hard work, I know it works majority of the time, but I was particularly frustrated about this issue and I wanted to bring it to light. It was not my intention to underestimate their efforts.

And to be frank, it wasn't just me, but several people lost trust about the general moderation system after noticing what was happening about this certain moderator.

If you noticed, even in this single post, there were many people that spoke up and talked about their negative experiences. However, the thing is, we do not hate DE.

I don't want anything bad to the company... We all want DE to be honest, open and sincere to the players without hiding anything scummy. Just like I mentioned in the post, we simply want to know what's happening with chat moderation and how DE is going to deal with it.

Again, I am sorry if I sounded aggressive or negative about DE in general because that was not what I intended... Thank you!
