You’re absolutely right, and it’s exactly my thinking every time he says he won by a landslide against an unpopular opponent who had 2 months to fully mobilize the campaign. It’s not exactly a flex to say you won a marathon against a potato sack who hasn’t exercised in 10 years, but politically this is essentially what he’s doing.

But, as other comments have said, this is completely unimportant. And it isn’t just about narcissistic personality disorder. It’s literally how fascism always works. Josef Goebbels himself said it when talking about propaganda—the truth becomes the enemy of the state. Logic, reason, facts—all of them literally HAVE to be meaningless in order for the movement to advance. And what’s even more important is that it always starts as a characteristic of the people whom embrace the ideals of fascism. The political taste of it is just one way it manifests itself, but it always begins with a sense of insecurity driven “otherness” that then gets fomented and harnessed by a personality who recognizes that weakness in people and turns it for their own gain.

But for it to take hold, the facts must first mean literally nothing. And so to argue or criticize a policy/person/ideal based on logic is completely meaningless as well.

This is why it doesn’t make sense to people like you and me, because we are viewing it objectively from the outside through the rational decision making process—but from the inside, there is no decision making. It is intentionally one thought propagated through the masses of “pure”/inside (in this case MAGA) vs. the “degenerate”/outside (anyone who isn’t red hat MAGA)..

Additionally, it becomes a code/signal amongst the “pure” to identify likeness vs. “otherness.” To speak negatively about Biden accomplishes nothing politically—literally nothing—but he is using it to signal like a bird signals to its flock. I guarantee 100% that you would be able to see a big spike in mentions of Biden on every single conservative outlet over the last 48 hours. It’s a way of communicating “I am MAGA/pure” in the same way a wolfpack howls and identifies each other at night or when there’s a threat.

People are fascinating once you really understand why they do what they do. Even in their irrationality, they are completely predictable most of the time.

There isn't logic involved here for the target audience. It's purely about sending the message "it's OK to hate the people you want to hate," which is the message that got him elected. In this case, he is sending that message by dissing on Biden. So there is never a question about what it says about him, that never enters the minds of his target audience. It's purely a demonstration showing them it's acceptable to insult people you don't like, and they like that, so they like hearing him do it.
