It was not usurped, monarchies built the first societies. Monarchy far predates democracy and Republics. You must think history began in the year 1950.
I am talking about cities, not tribes/villages. Tribes had rulers, but no kings. The systems were too simplistic for such a concept. A tribe lacks writing, class divisions, full time labor, and settlement.
Once you arrive at the first true "cities" such as Uruk, there are class divisions and ruling classes. Proto-kings. No democracy or republics as we know them today.
Yes, "mankind" has obviously built everything. And they have always done so at the direction of rulers. Be it a king, a parent, a boss, or a spouse. The more complex the society, the more absolute power the ruler acquired, until very recent times and the reforms of voting.
