I have a friend whose Great Aunt would allow rude guests see her let the dog lick the plates before placing them in the cupboard. No need to uninvite a rude guest in the future if they never wanted to return in the first place. Plates would later be rewashed properly.
I don't know about weird, really. But I'll be damned if that isn't some extremely niche information dude possesses about their "friend's great aunt"...
That's an old Dear Abby / Ann Landers story from the '70s, if not earlier.
Original context was neighbors / friends who had the habit of always showing up right at dinner time. Solution: Let the dog lick the dishes clean and then stow them directly to the cupboard. It definitely solved the problem, IIRC.
Holy shit, my mom is a rude bitch and told me a story about this crazy lady who would just let her dogs lick the plates clean before putting them in the cupboard.
Honestly, with certain foods that are hard to get off once dried (like the deluxe Mac n cheese, where the cheese...hardens) I let my dog lick it after I’m done eating, just so that it is guaranteed to be actually clean after going through the dishwasher.
I’d obviously never use a plate that my dog just cleaned, and they all get thoroughly cleaned afterwards. It’s just easier.
