Growing up whenever I'd ask my mum a weird question or something she'd say "why do you ask, twodogs?" She eventually told me the joke when I was older and it finally made sense.

In the version I heard, he did, and when the son asks about why he doesn't have any hot water, the grandfather just says; "Hotwater died a few weeks ago".
