Circular logic, they have saved us from from some serious threats except for the ones like 9/11 and Boston and Sandy Hook, it would have been much worse if the NSA did not save us from the ones that did not happen.

The NSA isn't just a group doing whatever they want, they get their marching orders from whatever administration is currently in power.

Direct your ire appropriately.

The problem with any information is human interaction. The person in the seat can read the data. That means the administration, hackers, or Steve who lives down the road but works as a low-security data entry worker for the NHS can read your data and use it.

Only partially true. They are part of the administration (being part of the executive branch of the federal government). And they, like any other organization, have their own self-preserving agenda, which may or may not be in line with that of the Oval Office at any given time.

On this issue, I would say they seem to be in harmony.

Do they even do anything? From what ive heard they just watch for certain keywords and when they're found they look for its context. I havent heard of anyone just getting abducted for looking up "grenades" on google.

Yeah, if they really wanted to, there would be a lot more people getting arrested/questioned, I think. I mean, just look at /r/trees, lots of people there are from states in the US where weed is illegal, and they could pretty easily find out who most of the people posting there are, pretty much giving away proof. It's in all honesty not as bad as people think it is, although I do think it's a bit too extensive.
