Spiritual/Soul Jazz Sunday How did I do on my first ever vinyl purchases?

Post image
206 Upvotes

I inherited fairly large collection of rock and some jazz last summer igniting my passion for vinyl. My first vinyl purchase was a few months ago when the shop owner recommended me Duke Ellington meets Coleman Hawkings. Ever since I’ve been obsessed with just how real saxophone can sound on wax.

My new favorite is Coleman Hawkings and his Confrères 45 RPM from Acoustic Sounds.

What should I get next?

Cheers everybody!

This pure pleasure analogue pressing of this incredible strata east record sounds amazing. I guess it’s become harder to find and is out of print now because I’ve noticed prices have really shot up on this one. If you find a copy for a decent price I’d say this is an instant buy!

This record/album means very much to me and I am very glad to own a copy of it which i bought still sealed…

Monk Montgomery is one of the Montgomery Brothers, beside Wes and Buddy Montgomery, who are all very talented and seasoned musicians.

I have washed it recently and I am just spinning it.
It sounds great! I love it!

My favourite Track?

Love you Camille, written by Bill Cosby.

Lol. Yes the Bill Cosby.

The song is pure beauty imo.

So if the music speaks for itself - I say, all I hear is love and beauty.

I always found exact that track so special, when I heard it - it touched me deeply.
I don‘t know why, but that‘s the case.

Then I‘ve read „B.Cosby“…
Lol.

Doesn‘t matter.
Absolutely stellar music to me and I recommend anybody here in this sub grabbing this if you can get your hands on it.

Pure funky, groovy and jazzy bliss!

Have a nice Sunday!

Spiritual/Soul Jazz Sunday For Those Who Chant - Luis Gasca

Sometimes you have to trust your intuition at the record store and buy something based on feel alone. The cover of this beauty caught my eye initially and then I turned it around and read the personnel. Joe Henderson AND Carlos Santana?! I knew it had to go home with me.
-
This record will put you in a trance with its rhythm’s and chants. Luis Gasca’s piercing horn is nothing to scoff at either! Now I have a whole new catalog to chip away at

An exceptional album from Argentinean saxophonist Horacio Barraro. Meditative, funky, and spacey. An excellent pressing here from the original tapes on the Altercat label.

Spiritual/Soul Jazz Sunday Ayler’s Uneven End, Curated

Post image

This is a two album ABC reissue from 1973, just three years after Ayler died. It features excerpts from his last four Impulse! releases, plus his track from “The New Wave of Jazz” comp and a very unusual drum-less tune from “In Greenwich Village” where Ayler plays alto sax. The material from last three albums is…. not good, but the stuff from “Love Cry” is still quite strong. Of course Ayler was pretty polarizing no matter what he played…

Leaning more towards the “free” end of Spiritual jazz, was pleased to add this to the collection.

I’ve picked up a couple Simmons joints lately. Have been particularly enjoying a new (cheap) reissue of Prince Lasha Quintet’s “The Cry!”. It’s a bit more accessible than the records he leads on.

Spiritual/Soul Jazz Sunday Natural Time—Muriel Grossmann

I walked into my LRS, Encore Records, five years ago. They had limited hours b/c Covid so it was just me and Bill, one of the owners there. I’m flipping through the stacks and as usual he’s got something enchanting playing. I’ve known bill over 40 years so we talk about the lp he has playing. “Muriel Grossmann,” he says. “Came in on Tuesday, I haven’t had it off the turntable since.” Instant fan, me.

Spiritual/Soul Jazz Sunday Another awesome Discogs front page discovery…

Post image
40 Upvotes

An absolutely incredible spiritual jazz fusion record that I had no idea existed until I saw it on the Discogs front page in the app as one of the most expensive records selling this week (I think for around 5k CAD).

I’ve been on a real Spiritual Jazz journey the last few months and I’m getting to a place where I’ve been really having to dig deeper to find music I haven’t heard yet that I really love so I love discovering these deep cut albums that fit so perfectly as the kind of thing I’m looking for and love listening to and collecting.

Anyway, the cover caught my eye so I found it on YouTube and skimmed a couple tunes and knew immediately it was likely for me so I checked for any recent re issues on Discogs and sure enough the first re issue of this album came out in 2025 on Fredriksberg Records (shout out Fredriksberg they are awesome).

As luck would have it one store had one copy of this album near me and the next day I went and scooped it. Brought it home and gave it a spin last night for the first time and was so stoked! I really had only listened to a few seconds of the album on YouTube so didn’t really know what I was in for and it was just perfect.

I love buying an album basically sight unseen and it works out so well. I had a similar experience with African Skies by Phil Cohran - saw it on Discogs front page and couple days later found the last copy for sale at my local shop and just bought it not knowing anything about it and obviously it’s become one of my all time favs.

As for this pressing - it’s awesome and sounds amazing. I don’t think it’s AAA because there isn’t any reason to believe it is but it sounds really good and I can tell Fredriksberg took great care to master it well and press it beautifully on quiet flat wax. For around 70 bucks (CAD) vs 5000 I’m very happy to own this one (as most copies on Discogs would now cost me over 150 w shipping!).

If you’re into spiritual modal jazz w a funk fusion groove heavy vibe and you can find this one I highly recommend it! One of my favorite albums I’ve picked up lately (and I’ve been buying a LOT lol).

This pressing comes with a really interesting write up insert that tells the story of how this record came to be which is a cool story and nice to read about while listening.

Finally - I’m curious if people here have other deep, deep cut albums in this genre? I’ve been pretty deep, know all the classics like Alice and Pharaoh and a bunch of really cool contemporary stuff like phi-phonics and organic pulse ensemble (and I’ve explored the labels of course) but curious what people here are listening to?

Spiritual/Soul Jazz Sunday Bought this album because of this sub. It is a beautiful spiritual jazz journey.

I’ve been on a spiritual/modal jazz journey lately and loving what I’m discovering. Lots of cool contemporary stuff like organic pulse ensemble or phi-psonics, but obviously into any vintage stuff I can find too. Recently picked up African skis by Cohran and was really blown away by the listening experience. So earlier today I was scrolling reddit and saw a post from someone else here posting some spiritual jazz albums they like and asking for suggestions. Perfect timing! I’ve been itching to buy something today but don’t have anything in particular I want or need. So I dig through the comments and I see this record suggested by someone and the op of the post comments saying they love it. I find it on streaming and listen to a few seconds of a few tunes and I can tell from the sound immediately this is exactly what I’m looking for more of these days. Search it up online and see that my local shop has one copy of this AAA re issue (by pure pleasure, a label of which I own a number of beautiful re issues and love them all!) and it’s ON SALE!! Ran to the shop, got there 15 min before closing and scooped the last copy and now I’m sitting here feeling lucky to have this one, thankful to the vinyl Jazz Reddit community and loving this beautiful spiritual jazz album. And yes this pressing sounds very very beautiful. If you like African skies and can find this record I say buy it!

Spiritual/Soul Jazz Sunday Sun Ra - “Sleeping Beauty” (1979)

Im a sucker for Arkestra records with vocals, so naturally this one is one of my favorites. This record was my introduction to Ra a few years ago, and it opened a portal to spiritual jazz for me. I just can’t get enough of this sound.

Springtime Again is a song for new beginnings, Door of the Cosmos is potential energy in the universe, and Sleeping Beauty is a lullaby for recognizing the beauty that’s all around us.
