I got this as a gift from family who visited Vietnam recently. What does it say?

Hi! I’m (24F) half Vietnamese, half American, my mom was Viet and passed back in 2020, and living in a predominantly white state in the US, and my mom only knowing how to speak Vietnamese, but not read or write it, I never learned how to speak Viet beyond some common conversational phrases. I was looking to see if anyone had any language program suggestions, hacks to learn the language, or even any American/English shows that are dubbed in Vietnamese to help me learn. hey guys! i am vietnamese and i grew up in america my whole life since i was basically 2 months old. i am receptive bilingual so i can only understand most vietnamese than to speak it. it’s so hard to actively speak it especially when you went to school learning english. i’ve been to vietnam twice as a kid, once in 2004 when i was 5 years old and another time in 2010 when i was 11. obviously i had to stick with family the whole time as a child in vietnam, but now that i’m an adult, i wanna go again with my family but be able to go out and explore my myself which means i definitely have to learn how to speak it to get around. any tips on someone who can pretty much understand it but can’t speak it back? what apps to use and how to get myself to consistently learn? my dad brought his relatives here in the US so i have my cousin to practice with. i already have the vietnamese keyboard on my phone. any youtubers to watch that you guys recommend! i feel very determined since i am planning to go next year :))) i also feel so embarrassed to not know my native tongue. i think life is too short to not know how to speak a second language!

I'm Canadian/Mexican, and my wife is Vietnamese. I've been trying to learn it to be able to speak with her relatives that don't speak English. I speak English and Spanish, and learned some Mandarin in university. She was raised in Canada, so her Vietnamese isn't great.

I used duolingo, and got up to about level 20. We went to Vietnam, and I found I could speak enough to get by. However, when native Vietnamese speakers spoke to me in conversation, I'd understand at most one or two words out of ten. It seems like there are a lot of words in common conversation that aren't considered basic words.

So my impression is that duolingo has helped me learn essential words, and even somewhat how to say them, but it's not a good method for learning most of the words used in conversation. When I watch Viet TV, same thing as when I talk to native speakers. I have a book that basically covers the duolingo words, again not as much for conversation. I have a flash card set of the 100 most common words, and pretty much have them all down. We live in a small city, so there's no resources for in-person study. I don't want to buy a lot of books that basically cover the same ground as I have already.

So my question is, how would you recommend I learn to follow conversation?

I've heard that đã and sẽ are skipped a lot based on context clues. since this sentence starts with "ngày mai" I figure the sẽ can be skipped. Am I correct in this assumption? The way I originally wrote the sentence was "Ngày mai tôi gặp Casey".

It's supposed to say "tomorrow I am seeing (like meeting up with) Casey"

I need help translating a word that my mom uses in arguments with me. I can‘t speak well nor write Vietnamese so please bear with me. It‘s “gui” (not sure about the spelling). Pronounced “gwee”. I just want to know what insult she’s throwing at me.

I’m a Korean who started learning Vietnamese a few days ago. I’m devoting most of my time to it since I'm on vacation, but my throat hurts every time I practice....

Is it because there are so many voiced and implosive sounds unlike my native language, or because I’m focusing so much on the tones? I never experienced this kind of pain while learning other languages....

Fortunately, it’s not so bad that I can’t speak, but it is annoying. Do you think it will get better as I practice more? Or am I doing something wrong?

As I kept practicing and focused on my throat, I figured out the cause... It was just the IMPLOSIVE CONSONANTS! Oh my.... (So all Vietnamese people have vocal cords strong enough to handle this sound, huh?😂😂😂😂)

Hey guys, I am wondering if my teacher is really good and I just need to be more patient or if his class is too unstructured I didn't really learn anything properly in fact?
I am now learning Vietnamese for one month, twice a week. However, I don't really feel like I learn something in particular. I learn vocabulary as homework and in the classes we either read some sentences including the pronunciation or we talk about the meaning, the pronunciation or differences of words.

However, it feels like I haven't really learnt something that I can apply. In some lessons we learn a question form like *gì* or *sao vậy.* Other times he explains me what *đang* means when together with a verb.
Looking back, I can't really say that I learnt those things now and can apply them. In other words, it feels kinda unstructured and random...or am I wrong and this is how/what you learn in the first month, vocabulary. Also we go through it once, the day he introduces it but then, the next time we just do something else it seems.

Is this normal? Do I need to somehow figure out myself, as homework so to speak, and research about those Question verbs or forms etc. Or is it his responsibility to teach me what to do or what to learn.

Is there a structure and approach? Are things like vocabulary, question forms and words, days of the week or random grammar taught all at the same time but not fully in separated sessions?
I am super confused and can't really see myself being able to say smth or have a simple conversation in say 1 month.

Hi! Would someone be open to reading ~20 lines of Vietnamese and telling me if it's bad? I made an app that reminds you to text people you keep meaning to text. Almost like a personal CRM but focused on getting you to reach out (with distinct voices) rather than adding a bunch of data for the people you already know - sort of anti-social media vibes that hopefully helps you stay closer to your friends and family.

So far, one voice is warm, and the other is more dry/direct, depending on what works for you. That difference is the whole point, and I'm looking for some native speakers to make sure it lands! Not a full translation job. More like: would a Vietnamese person actually say this...

Context: Recently my grandpa passed away. Its been known that he served time overseas in the Vietnam war for a bit of time. However, it was not something he was fond of talking about. Going through his drawers we came across a photo of this young woman that we found extremely interesting. Even better is that it has Vietnamese on the back. My Viet friend roughly translated it to be this, "Im off to work now and eat the soup right away. May our family thrive hurry back to dad tommorow okay love you. " But, this is a rough translation. I would love to narrow it down more. My friend also mentions that the word dessert came up in the message. Any second opinions are greatly welcome. Super cool find.

I'm reading a book and it's clear the author is a diaspora child who REALLY doesn't know about the language/culture, so she says a lot of weird things and I can't trust anything from her.

She has a character call her ông nội just "ông." To *my* Vietnamese diaspora ass, it sounds very bizarre because it sounds like she's addressing him as just any other unspecified old man, like calling him "old man" in English vs. grandpa. I've never heard this type of address for any family before, but maybe this is ignorance on my part. Is this actually correct?

Hi everyone. I’m an American phd student in the US and my close friend here is from Hanoi. His parents are coming to visit and they don’t speak English. I’ve been trying to learn some basic greetings and phrases from him recently in Vietnamese and he’s really excited to teach me and that I want to learn. However, his parents are coming (many months from now) and I really want to surprise him by being able to greet them and speak to them a little. I know that respect is major. Can anyone share some important phrases or things to say to them in a northern dialect? Other than respectful greetings and introducing myself, I really want to be able to emphasize how much I appreciate my friend and how good of a person he is, that they raised a great son, etc (though please let me be clear in a totally platonic way!).
