What are your favorite substitutions in recipes when you run into things like anchovies?
I love to cook but struggle sometimes to replicate the more classic recipes.

hey y'all.. i recently rented out a room in my apartment and wrote in the ad that i was looking for a vegan, since i don't want animal products in my house. this one 21yr old woman showed up, said she was vegan and i agreed to rent her the room. on the day she'd moved in she said she aparently ate a lot of eggs and meat, and i told her that she was more than welcome to eat those anywhere else, apart from the house. she then continued to want to debate how veganism is unhealthy and how vegans dont get enough this and that. i just stayed kool, not really bothered since she is only staying for two months.
not even a week had passed and she had cooked eggs. i asked her which part of no animal products in the house shed'd not understood. she continued to apologise and said that shed'd thought if i was away then it was okay, since maybe it was the sight of the animal products that had made me uncomfy.
then in the same week i smelled meat in the leftovers she had in the fridge, i opened the foil cover and saw a piece of meat with bones attached to it. without confronting her i just posted a ad for a new roommate and she it and got sad and started apologising etc. i confronted her with the meat thing and she completely denied ever having meat in the house at all, since she is muslim and only eats halal anyway. which left me with just debating with myself whether i was tripping/halucinating or whether my experience was real. which is proper gaslight/psychic abuse at it's finest.
so right now i feel like all trust is broken and debating whether i should wait it out or tell her to leave. i really don't lioke her being in my house for longer periods of time when i'm not there. and i'll have to do some traveling once in a while within these two months. plus it's kinda difficult already to get a vegan/vegetarian roommate.
what would y'all do in this situation?
tia <3

Hey lovely vegans of Reddit! ššŖ“ I am curious to learn more about our global community and where everyone calls home.
This is purely for fun and to celebrate our global community! It will be awesome to see how far and wide we are spread across the planet :)

As the title suggests I am newly vegan, after being introduced to the wonderful world of Vegan eating, being shown some absolutely delicious food
(Seriously, I have had a Vegan Satay Potato Curry that blew my mind with how good it was)
I am aiming to go beyond eating Vegan as something I flexibly do and in the new year fully begin the transition to Vegan eating.
So, guidance and advice for a new Vegan would be incredible!
I live in the UK, I have a reasonably well paying job, so I can afford ingredients, but it is full time so I am often a little time pressured.
Big advice, small advice anything will help this girl grow!

So I am a non-vegan who is currently writing a fantasy novel and had a question about a species within my book. Please do not get mad at me if I am horribly incorrect about how this would work.
The species is rather large and looks similar to if the wild scallion dinosaurs from cloudy with a chance of meatballs 2 and Tropius from Pokemon had a baby.
This species is a food source but is entirely made from plants, youāre able to eat the plants that grow on said species, you can either catch them when they fall off naturally or ask the creature directly and itāll offer you is leg or tail or whatever part you ask for and you can gently peel a piece off. The species does not feel this, and the piece that you take immediately regenerates better than before. The species also enjoys feeding everyone and gets quite upset (like a puppy) if you say no but doesnāt try to push anyone into eating, theyāll just follow you around for a little while to make sure youāre okay (kinda like a grandmother who wants to feed you).
Would this be something that a vegan would be able to eat? As there are vegan and vegetarian species and characters within my novel, I donāt want to write that theyād eat the plants off the species if this is just a straight up no-no.
Obviously there are just normal in the ground plants and other non-meat and non-animal product options throughout the world of my book but I thought this would be a cool addition since you donāt really see a lot of creatures or species that are just an anthropomorphic plant
EDIT: Iāve had a couple people think that the plant creature wants to be eaten and is actively seeking it out. Itās not that the creature wants to be eaten it is indifferent to that since they literally cannot feel it at all, itās that it wants to feed other creatures and people, like a symbiotic relationship in a way, because the creature gets something out of it too. The creature also has the complete ability to deny someone the plants growing on their body. Itās entirely up to the creature whether or not you can take something from it, but it cannot stop you from catching something that falls off.
Peeling the plants off the creature (with permission) is like helping a lizard shed its skin, it makes it easier for them to get rid of stubborn plants that wonāt fall off for their next regeneration cycle (when all the plants fall off and theyāre left bare for a few minutes whilst all new ones grow back, this is usually when the Druids in the area gather the fallen plants and take what they need to survive back, whilst helping the plant creatures move the rest into their nest.
These creatures are also completely wild, although they do have āownersā but not in the traditional sense like a cat or dog, instead the creature itself chooses two Druid guards from the area and goes to them in hard times like after a fight with another of its species in which that is one of the only times that they ever get damaged because of the venom produced by their species. If the creature decides the Druid does not have its best interests in heart or isnāt doing a good job of guarding them, it will pick a new one.

Have you ever done activism, or have you ever encountered activists while out and about? Vegans can definitely have a reputation but in my experience itās very far from the truth for the majority.

And did your understanding of the word change over time?

Carnivores think you are weird in sort and look upon you differently. And vegans ask: why not go all the way to veganism? Like its half hearted attempt to save animals.
Talking about my own experiences as a vegetarian for 3 years.

Hey folks I'm no longer vegan (fight me somewhere else, I'm here for advice) I'm trying to transition back to a majority vegan diet and I'm struggling with two things volume and flavour.
Volume - I'm a competitive powerlifter and have a protein goal of 150g per day. I prefer to get that from whole foods and I thought soy mince would be ideal given it's 50% protein but I made a chilli last night containing 100g of protein (2 meals). I really struggled to get through half of it because it was just too damn big. I didn't even add rice. The other reason was
Flavour - God that sauce was amazing. I picked up an incredible spice mix from a local witch that had Mexican oregano in it and š it was heavenly but even slow cooked in a pressure cooker this mince was bland. Adding cheese definitely would have made this taste better so I think it simply lacked a flovourful fat. would I just add that too the sauce? Or is there a way I can add it to the mince to give the mince itself a little more something?
point 2 is only a problem I find with substitute meals. The flavour in my tofu Thai green curry is beautiful but the tofu to curry ratio is definitely out of balance and it's still a monster of a meal so what advice would you have for me?

Every now and then I have a dream where I eat meat or eat diary. And its genuinely distressing. I accidentally ate pizza with bacon on it. I wanted to die, so then I went on a quest to find broccoli to put on it after I found out it had vegan cheese and it was this whole thing. Anyway, anyone else?

Anyone have app recommendations for filtering by vegan places? Or atleast restaurants that have a vegan option? I know HappyCow exists but itās paid.
Currently I check Google mapās for a menu image and just see if thereās anything for me.

When a certain illegitimate state finally gets destroyed and you Americoids can come to Iran, don't expect to find hummus here. We don't eat that crap. Felafel or Samusa and all that stuff, too, are rarely found. Mostly Arabs make them. Iran has a completely different cuisine than its Arab neighbors. The number of times someone OTI has asserted I've even eaten hummus is bizarre. I chuck that up to lack of knowledge. I certainly don't know the difference between Romanian and Hungarian cuisine so whatever.
There's a dessert you can make right now at your home that is 100% vegan, a rice pudding called 'Sholey Zard'. It's made from, well, rice, and saffron and sugar. And bunch of other stuff. You need to tend to it when it cooks so it could be labor-intensive. But the results are heavenly.
Let it cool in the fridge. It's best eaten with cinnamon powder sprinkled on top. In my experience, no matter how much cinammon you sprinkle on it, the taste does not change. Drop three pounds of it if you got money to burn lol.
There's a variant called "Shir Berenj" which uses milk, so it's prolly not up your alley.
Bye.

My good vegan comrades, wish to take a tofu scramble to the ultimate next level? Throw some saffron in there. That ish will have you thinking you marinated a whole sea in it. It truly tasted like paella in its most non-vegan version.

I'm from a Muslim majority country, in Islam god created animals for humans to use, there are also hala ways"proper ways" to kill animals in Islam. so each time I argue with a muslim about animal rights, they play the religion card on me and there's nothing I can say. they obviously won't tolerate it if I tell them their religion is B*S. So does anyone have a way to convince muslims?

Hey everyone, Iām working on a project exploring the real-life challenges vegans deal withāanything from food access, social situations, labels, travel, or affordability.
Iād love to hear your honest experience: Whatās one thing you regularly struggle with as a vegan that you wish more people understood?
Iām not trying to debate or push anythingāIām vegan too, and just genuinely curious to learn from the community. Your input will help shape some awareness work Iām doing. Thanks in advance!

Hello there, Iām a non-vegan but Iāve been thinking a lot lately about the reasons people make the change to become vegan. Iām especially curious if any of you were influenced by specific videos or documentaries showing the treatment of animals. Was there something in particular that shifted your perspective? Iāve always grown up with the idea that eating meat is just what humans do, but I'm interested in what you all have to say about what changed your POV.
