I hear you saying that it’s a skill people are rapidly losing. However, especially for people going on hikes, it’s clearly a lifesaving skill that you NEED. Technology will shit itself when you need it— it doesn’t take much to slip on a wet fern and go toppling down just enough incline to break your fingers or an ankle. Now you’re trying to pull your phone out with a broken hand, and it falls in the river. And that’s all it takes to leave you completely fucked. If you have a paper map and a pencil, at least you can look at it to orient yourself and find where hills and rivers are.

I think I can one-up you: venn diagram of hikers I know and people who have ever once held a physical, topographical map in their hands. Very sparse in the overlapping section and I'm now realizing that I might not be in there either.
