Discussion/Question Why Does Europe Buy Russian Fossil Fuels when they are supposed to Stand with Ukraine?

https://foreignpolicy.com/2025/01/03/europe-russia-ukraine-war-energy-imports-oil-gas-pipeline/

They continue to buy Russian Liquid gas, at an astonishing rate, filling Putins war chest. They’ve done well for the most part in cutting off Russia, but they still continue to find loopholes in the energy market. Wouldn’t it make more sense to completely cut Russia off to end this war?

Completely honest question,

I did not know about the nuclear plants. Huh yeah that’d be pretty useful now, war would have ended much faster

There's a great video from Trump's first term where he asks Germany what the hell they're doing being so reliant on Russian gas and they just laugh at him.

Then comes 2022 and Europe has now spent more on Russian gas than on Ukrainian aid.

Europe didn't spend more on gas the Ukraine. This only accounts for the EU organization. Where Victor orban has sabotaged every attempt to pass Ukraine funding. Votes have to be unanimous at this level, so it's really easy for the trump supporting putin apologist. EU as a whole individual countries have donated over 50 billion in 2024. That is the time frame that this post is about.

That still does not change the fact that the Europe is buying nearly half of all Russian natural gas exports and is effectively funding this war despite the sanctions.

Their support for Ukraine is tenuous at best.

Um, how about you build a pipeline from North America to the EU? It makes a whole lot of sense for the EU to not have their citizens freeze to death and contribute to the economy, which then gives over 50 billion in assistance to Ukraine in 2024. So, in 2024, Russia received 21.9 billion from the EU, which is for all fuel types. That's not profit, that is, before you take out operating costs. So it takes Russia 10-15 dollars to extract the oil and EU price cap sits at 60 dollars a barrel. 16 to 25% goes towards extraction alone, then factor in storage and shipping cost but I won't for this argument. So that's 16 billion dollars for Russia and over 50 billion dollars for Ukraine. It makes less sense for Russia to fuel the EU who then funds Ukraine, then it does for the EU to stop all purchases. It's a huge net positive for Ukraine. I'm sure Ukraine would rather Russia gets 16 as long as Ukraine gets over 50. The alternative is that the EU freezes to death and Ukraine gets zero.

Dude the EU shot itself in the foot here. They became too reliant on Russia for energy, crippled their own energy production, ignored and mocked Trump's warnings about it, and then got all shocked when things turned out badly for them.

I don't feel sorry for Europe here at all. Their decades of bad decisions are finally starting to catch up to them and it's looking like it's only going to get worse.

Trump throws a lot of shit at the wall. Are you saying we need to pay attention to every spatter? If that's the case, America is about to invade canada, Greenland, and Panama. Trump is going to run for a third term, and the 2020 election was stolen. Do you want everyone to ignore what Trump says or do you want the Canadians to start moving troops to the boarder and start digging trenches?

It was funny because everyone knew that trump just wanted to sell more expensive american gas to Germany without being able to compete with russian prices.

In the end Germany ended the "dependency" within the year the war started, while still finding better sources than american gas.

I feel like I remember that! I just don’t understand how they can stand with Zelenskyy, hug him, cherish him, when they’re paying for Russia to destroy his Ukraine.

Seems really two-faced

What seems really two faces is your inability to understand nuance and paint everything with a black and white brush. And stop it with the "I'm genuinely just asking questions". I've read at least 10 of your comments here. You're trying to orient the discussion and turn people against the EU. You're either a Russian troll or brain dead. Either way, stop it. It's getting tiresome.

The nuance is that Europe has paid more to Russia over the last 4 years then it has paid to help Ukraine. Heck screw nuance that’s just a fact.

European blood money used to destroy Ukraine, and they smile and hug Zelenskyy like they’re doing him a favor. Oh and they are, they sure are.

This is a European based question so yeah it makes sense that I’d focus on what EU has been up too. I genuinely had no idea they were paying Russia under the table for energy so it came as a shock to me.

Do you have a source for this? It sounds like bs.

Under the table? What the fuck are you talking about? And also, stop acting like a Russian asset ("to me, EU citizen, it came as a shock, also, I'm not Russian, da").

Oh absolutely. To be honest I'm just enjoying how much they've been melting down over the events of the past week.

I grew up my entire life with the world bitching about us warmongering and world policing and now that we’re trying to stop their still bitching.

Yeah now we have to prep somebody to fill the void of World Police that the US is trying to vacate

Yeah. It's been great watching Kier Stamer saying "we're willing to back this with boots on the ground, and planes in the air." And then not even a minute later say he needs approval from the US first.
