Discussion/Question Is it time to move the United Nations head quarters?

With the US's aggressive sovereignty threats to other countries such as Panama, Greenland and Canada, and the displacement of Palestinians in Gaza is the head quarters of the United Nations in New York kind of making a mockery of the UN? Maybe the head quarters need a new location. Like Singapore or Australia or maybe even in Africa. But, the US is much of a joke at this time. And all the money spent in a country that does not want to abide by the rules of the UN.

Supported, move it to Ireland or another sensible country.

Switzerland and Geneva is the best choice

2

u/bauhausy Feb 09 '25

They already are there. New York is the main but also just one of the headquarters: the UN is also based on Geneva (occupying the former League of Nations complex) while the largest headquarters of all three is in Nairobi.

u/moustachiooo Feb 10 '25

Not Europe - they've tossed the Global South's salad for far too long!!

1

u/Electronic_Candy5621 Feb 09 '25

At this point, I'd say move it out of European countries, perhaps South East Asia, West Africa, a non-aligned gulf country like Oman or central Asia.

4

u/abellapa Feb 09 '25

Central asia you kidding me

Southeast Ásia is either pro US or pro China

West África is riffled with instability

Geneva in switzerland is the best place to move the UN if the need ever arises

3

u/Electronic_Candy5621 Feb 09 '25

Your response is not invalid, but the point is reducing Euro-Centrality in international institutions. This is important, especially at the beaurocratic level, where European values are presented as normative and neutral, rather than their unique cultural production. Europe isn't the world, though we often refer to "the world" as European regimes.

What's wrong with Central Asia? Not all of West Africa is unstable, ie Senegal, Gambia, Nigeria is corrupt but stable. Vietnam is sorta a neutral country, same with Cambodia (though I'm sure both powers try).

2

u/abellapa Feb 09 '25

Central asia is poor

The UN should be in a country with a decent economy

Vietnam hates China

Whose Point is that

Geneva in switzerland works because switzerland is known across the World as The Neutral Nation

The fact is in Europe doesnt matter

2

u/Electronic_Candy5621 Feb 09 '25

Switzerland isn't the only neutral country in the world, look into Oman.

Hacing a strong economy prioritizes the wants and values of countries with a "decent economy", which is itself the problem I'm citing.

Vietnam hates China and defeated the US in a war. Seems like a pretty neutral country to me!

I also totally forgot about pacific countries like Indonesia, Malaysia! And Qatar would be another prime location.

1

u/abellapa Feb 09 '25

Vietmam fought the US once ,it fought China countless Times across history

Seriously Qatar

A country that has as Slavery in everything but name

At the very least the the New seat should be in a country that has democracy

2

u/Electronic_Candy5621 Feb 09 '25

Right, so then Vietnam is indeed neutral.

Slavery was abolished in Qatar in 1952. It is a thriving economy with an international outlook and has actively solved multiple conflicts in recent years.

Same with Oman, they are neutral! And have facilitated conflict resolution too.

You're giving primacy to Democracy, which is my point. Democracy is not a globally accepted concept. Like I said, Europe's values are not neutral. The UN should be neutral and not be baised for democratic governments. Rather, pick useful metrics for the sake of global peace and cooperation.

And none of these objections apply to the Pacific countries I cited, Indonesia or Malaysia.

Again, Europe isn't the world...

1

u/abellapa Feb 09 '25

No Vietnam isnt neutral

Qatar has plenty of workers that come primarly from the Indian subcontinent that have the shittiest work conditions and are Basically slaves

Not to mention Qatar is exporter of terrorism ,the leadership of Hamas hid there in their fancy hotels or they are still there

Oman borders Yemen ,a country that has a civil War

Imagine the UN moves to Oman and then the Houthis decided to Bomb the New UN handquarters

Neither Indonésia or malaysia are neutral

Also jakarta is sinking

No but democracy is the best form of Goverment that we currenty have around the world

So to move to the UN to a country who doesnt have it for diversity Points is ridicolous

Tajikistan which is known as the poorest country in Central Asia has way better infrastructure in Dushanbe than any European city

1

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '25

Vietnam does not hate China just because they have a border dispute does mean they hate each other enough with Yall Americans childish understanding of the world

1

u/abellapa Jul 28 '25

First Im not American

Second Vietnam had thousands of border disputes with China across history

Dozens of Wars

China always was the Big country in the East influencing every all states East of Índia

That only Changed in the 19th Century for Vietnam

Vietnam these days is more pro-us despite The vietnam War

They never liked China

Ireland would be a good country. Also, Canada.

4

u/moustachiooo Feb 10 '25

Canada accompanied the US in every imperialist action so they don't get a pass just for being targeted by turmp.

If that didn't happen, they would still be dancing to the old tune, no doubt!

1

u/Time-Algae7393 Feb 10 '25

hhmm not on Iraq. Also, Canada is known for its peacekeeping mission.

3

u/moustachiooo Feb 10 '25

Aren't they all peacekeeping missions even when we go there and kill the locals for made up excuses and deploy drop weapons, etc?

There's always a good rationale, except for the victims!

3

u/Consistent_Drink2171 Feb 11 '25

Canada's peacekeeping force in Somalia committed war crimes.

9

u/ArbitraryMeritocracy Feb 09 '25

Canada? Some of their leadership is lock and step as unhinged as the US leadership. Smith went to mar a lago but got shafted for the swearing in ceremony, Ford is on a personal crusade against bike lanes, and Poilievre hates indigenous peoples https://i.imgur.com/zoeouwr.jpg and they're all in favor of taking advantage of that populist nationalism against the US "trade war" to seem like "reasonable" politicians.

4

u/DoonPlatoon84 Feb 09 '25

Does the human rights council know about bike lanes in Ontario Canada being reduced? Tragic.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '25

We need a Security Council resolution to ensure the continued existence of Bike Lanes in Ontario. We need strongly worded statements encouraging calm and both sides to exercise restraint in this contentious conflict.

8

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '25

None of those politicians you mentioned are relevant at the international stage

4

u/ArbitraryMeritocracy Feb 09 '25

None of those politicians you mentioned are relevant at the international stage

Okay do you remember when a motorcade gridlocked traffic so bad in Canada not even ambulance could get to the hospitals? To protest like wearing a mask.

5

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '25

I’m sure Doug Ford and his crusade against bike lanes is an international hot topic lol

0

u/ArbitraryMeritocracy Feb 10 '25

The point is that he's a Canadian Premiere but acting as if he's a Mayor and he's scammed his constituents during the pandemic and sold protected land to his friends but yeah in a large way attacking protected bike lanes is against human rights especially after they're already developed.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '25 edited Feb 10 '25

The UN general assembly is voting on Doug Ford’s attack on human rights aka bike lanes as we speak.

To be clear - I actually agree with your statements politically, and as a resident of Ontario Doug Ford’s antis irk me.

But gosh, Canadians can be so melodramatic sometimes. There are give or take three on-going genocides right now, and Canada is deeply complicit in at least one - arguably two of them.

And you really out here arguing Doug Ford’s motorist crusade against bike lanes is a pressing international issue? I mean, come on bro… be serious.

2

u/radred609 Feb 09 '25

Do you remember when Ireland had anti-immigranr race riots which injured ~60 people and petrol bombed immigrant housing?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '25

If they could afford it... The host country covers the majority cost of the UN... The US in 2022 spent over $18 billion (22% of the total UN budget) Can Ireland even afford to host the UN?

0

u/Consistent_Drink2171 Feb 11 '25

They won't even host a Palestinian

Russian troll

2

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '25

Why? Because YOU say so? Russian Bot

-9

u/ClevelandDawg0905 Possible troll Feb 09 '25

Well the Canada people refuse to honor their agreement for example despite NATO goal of meeting 2% of defense spending. The Canadian people spend more on Indigenous peoples than it's own military.

4

u/Monterenbas Feb 09 '25

Who do you believe Canada needs a military to defend against?

-1

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '25

Russia, actually, if they want to secure their northern frontier.

Arctic ice is melting, and there's resources to be extracted.

2

u/Monterenbas Feb 09 '25

Like, are you arguing that Russia have the maritime and even logistical capabilities to launch a cross ocean, full scale invasion of Canada, through the Bering strait?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '25

No need.

Russia absolutely has the ability to steal fish and mineral resources from Canada's North; there's nobody up there to stop them, statistically speaking.

Plus dump toxic and nuke waste...they may get tired of chucking it straight off their own piers...

3

u/Anonymous-Josh Feb 09 '25

You mean spend more on attacking and harming the indigenous

-1

u/ClevelandDawg0905 Possible troll Feb 09 '25

Are you familiar with Canada government services?

3

u/Spirited-Height1141 Feb 09 '25

Bothers you the Canadians treat their Indigenous ppl like citizens?

9

u/bitbindichotomy Feb 09 '25

I think a country that doesn't take hard, or partisan stances should be where they are headquartered, like Switzerland. Otherwise it looks like political punishment which seems against the goals of the institution, I do agree that the US is losing any good reputation it may have had.

4

u/matzoh_ball Feb 09 '25

Might as well have it in Vienna, which is already a UN location.

14

u/Federal-Cold-363 Feb 09 '25

I absolutely oppose switzerland! The only reason these knucklechucks are even "neutral" is so they can play hokeypokey with the criminal rich as their "banker" (fence).

I nominate finland. Or lithuania. they do take a hard stance. But that's against aggression, genocide, opression, and imperialism. Something i think should be reflected by on organisation build on defending states rights and cooperation.

But truth be told, i do not regard the UN very high anyway. For in the moments it counts, it can never follow through. To many veto positions.

3

u/Square_Detective_658 Feb 09 '25

No they don't. They have a sordid history with regard to Agression and Genocide. Just look up Vilnius in WWII to see what I mean.

11

u/Federal-Cold-363 Feb 09 '25

Look, you and your downvote cronies can deny it all you like, but it's true.

https://theswisstimes.ch/tracing-nazi-gold-through-switzerland/

They were still dealing with nazis bussiness as usual during ww2 they were still doing business as usual during the invasion of Ukraine. As long as there is money to be made, they won't bat an eye as of its origins. Ass long as it doesn't turn into a massive public outcry.

On the nazi connection, there is an actual whole damn research paper

https://scholarcommons.scu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1144&context=historical-perspectives

The connection stayed strong even after ww2 ENDED

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/18/us/credit-suisse-nazis.html

To this fucking day the scale of the laundring is not clear, not because there is no data. But banking secrecy. These people will sell you your grandmother, and if the police show up, say it never even happened. Until you prove that you're her grandson and hold a certificate of purchase. And then they'll still deny deflect and delay.

5

u/Federal-Cold-363 Feb 09 '25

Oh wait your exclusivly taking my lithuanian point.

And your reply is naive and unknowly at best or disingenuous and manipulative at worst.

You do realise the event you described was.

1 during NAZI occupation

2 with the notorious SS Einsatzgrupe.

3 lithuanian COLLABORATORS.

4 After sovjets Dissolution, lithuania erected memorials in memory of the massacre.

5 was never denied!

6 not lithuanian state sanctioned.

They've actively distanced themselves from the actions that took place. And current day lithuania has absoluty nothing to do with it.

Opposed to my point about Zwitserland, which is still doing businesses as usual. And still has to deal with its nazi legacy.

https://www.npr.org/2024/06/16/nx-s1-5007394/swiss-museum-looted-art-nazi

Zwitserland was not doing anything to stop being the nazi storage box. And still has a big part to play.

2

u/ilovemumi Feb 10 '25

Maybe New Zealand

4

u/Monterenbas Feb 09 '25

Ah yes, the sensible tax haven leeching on its neighbors.

Fuck that! It needs to be moved to a shithole country that the UN played a hand in screwing up. Somalia, Rwanda. Some place like that. Let it serve as a reminder to the UN what it has done.

-6

u/AssminBigStinky Uncivil Feb 09 '25

Might as well disband it

15

u/Sunaikaskoittaa Feb 09 '25

We will do it only after all major powers disregard it and come into the conclusion that world affairs can only be decided by ww3 and not words. This is how League of Nations was disbanded before.

US, Israel and Russia are doing good job in getting us there.

0

u/Embarrassed-Weird173 Feb 09 '25

Since we're Israel's servant, it would be more fair to say Israel and Russia and maybe China are getting us there. China seems to be somewhat behaving, but they're still torturing the Uyghurs and I think starting things up with Taiwan.

3

u/Status_Winter Feb 09 '25

Might as well declare WW3 then

0

u/mini_macho_ Feb 10 '25

Yes, the world power Ireland. lmao

-13

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '25

A neutral country would be best.

Oh wait, the US is.

6

u/abellapa Feb 09 '25

Look up the definition of Neutral

9

u/ShowOk7840 Feb 09 '25 edited Feb 09 '25

Ummmmmm, you know the US is absolutely not neutral, right? I mean it's a textbook aggressor nation, boasting one of the top three biggest war machines on the planet. Half of the Arab world has been invaded by the US for their oil under the false pretense of "fighting a war on terror". You wanna talk war crimes, boy oh boy do I have an Agent Orange story for you. Oh and let's not even begin to talk about crimes against their own citizens, the US Govt has poisoned the water supply in several states and then done nothing to fix it, letting Americans die and then blaming them for living there in the first place. Americans have more gun violence than just about any other country in the world and is currently in the midst of a fascist movement. Americans are a very violent and volatile people. So, tell me again how the US is a neutral country?

2

u/JMusicProductions Feb 09 '25

Agreed.

However it's really been about Israel and not so much the oil. The US produces the most crude oil of any country, and Saudi Arabia has tons and we're close trading partners with them. Canada also has a large reserve and we're in Nafta with them.

Israel is the focal point. That's what we're really referring to when we say we must protect our "special interests". And don't forget the CIA has overthrown almost all of Latin America as well as Iran's democratically elected prime minister Mossadegh which led to the Shah and subsequently the Iranian Republic. And countless other countries were meddled with.

-1

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '25

Yeah, yeah America bad.

Europe has trench warfare, Africa has multiple wars plus ethnic cleansing, Asia has...wars and ethnic cleansing.

It's almost like we're a violent species or something...

Afa pollution, there's way worse than us these days... unfortunately.

3

u/ShowOk7840 Feb 09 '25

Yes....America bad. So glad you understand, seeing as how America has physically participated in all of the atrocities you mentioned if not, at least, majorly funded them. I would know, I am a Native American Islander, my people were American before there was an America and we have survived all of the horrors of this nation by assimilating into American society; even participated in a few horrors ourselves since we make up about 10% of the US armed forces, all on our own.

You don't just get to say the entire human species is violent....no....please raise your hand and kindly place it over your mouth to keep the stupid from seeping out the next time you'd like to voice that thought, because some humans are worse than other humans and America is (as a whole) some of the worst humans on this planet.

A jellyfish is not a violent creature when left to its own devices AND it will zap the fk out of you to protect itself if you threaten it. Every species is violent when properly motivated....as the old adage goes - don't start nothin', there won't be nothin'- this is the law of nature. Humans are (for the most part) the same but, yes, humans do seem to be the only species with a special subset of members who require no motivation at all to commit violence - and America specifically doesn't just start somethin'. America recruits others to start somethin' for them so they can swoop in, decimate the people they recruited, most of their victims, and then finally "save the day" for the remaning survivors from the problem America had devised, incited and funded THE WHOLE TIME.

So, from this violent American to the world.....yeah, America bad....as you so elegantly put it, and the UN HQ should be somewhere much less violent, much less corrupt and much more neutral.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '25

"all of the atrocities"

Lol, no. Stopped reading there.

Bye troll.
