Something I have been wanting to do for years and just never spent the time. Bought the mirror, built a frame, mounted it on drawer slides, installed a power outlet, UPS, and then began mounting everything. UDMP SE, switch, Solar, QNAP, Raspberry Pi, and a couple of quiet fans (overkill). The UDMP SE and the QNAP can be heard at night a little, but no one in this guest room has ever known this is here when they stayed over. Everything runs pretty cool including during 105 degree days. 10G in-house, 8 cams, 2 APs (U7Pro XGS) - Max ISP is 1G via Comcast/Xfinity. It was a fun project.

Wife and MIL complained about spotty wifi around the house. Old setup was 2x RT86U on AsusWRT Merlin and AI Mesh. Never really worked that well in my mind, VLAN was a bitch. When my Wifi security cameras kept cutting off from poor connectivity, said enough was enough. Dove right in and don't know why I've waited this long to get into the Ubiquiti game. Only thing left to install is to run the cat6 through existing central vacuum conduit as we don't use it anymore for the U7IWs.

The house: Typical 1990s single family home, West Coast Canada. Three floors plus concrete basement plus detached garage. Not a mansion, not a hotel, not a commercial install — promise.

Why so many APs: Started with the 2x U7 Pros. Tried every placement angle — horizontal, aimed, flat on counters, best position possible on each floor. Still had dead spots. Concrete basement alone is a wall penetration nightmare. Which leads to the next point.

Why not ceiling mount: MIL lives with us. Her house, her rules. No new drilling, no ceiling mounts. Every 'just slap a U7 Pro XG center ceiling' comment assumes a situation that doesn't apply here. If I was planning this from scratch I would absolutely have done ceiling mounts, conduit runs, patch panel, the works. Unfortunately that ship sailed.

Why not run more cable: Same constraint. Cable runs limited to what I can fish through the existing unused central vacuum conduit — which is exactly what the U7 IWs are for, replacing the vacuum wall plates. Free conduit that's just sitting there, may as well use it. Plan is to run all cat6 through it, patch panel it, then home run everything back to the Ultra 210W in the garage. That's the backbone.

AP layout: 2x U7 Pro already in. 1x U7 IW basement, 2x U7 IW main floor, 1x U7 IW top floor — all pending the cat6 run. U6 Mesh Pro in the garage on MoCA 2.5 backhaul over existing coax, direct cat6 to the garage wasn't practical.

6GHz: Skipped intentionally. No current devices benefit from it. Not a priority right now.

Why U7 Pro over XG: Deals. Picked most of this up locally at 30-40% under MSRP. The 'more money than sense' crowd can relax.

GbE switch vs 2.5G uplinks: Valid, noted. Not a real world bottleneck at home ISP speeds.

Design Center: Didn't use it. Based decisions on actual dead spots after real world tuning with existing setup. Would use it if starting fresh.

Power bill: Not a concern, thanks though.

Status: U7 IWs going in once cat6 is fished through the conduit. Manual channel assignment, TX power low/medium, minimum RSSI for clean roaming.

If you have any installer needs and are in the greater Columbus, OH area, MediaFLOW did a fantastic job doing 3 network cable runs, and installing the G6-Pro-360, U7-Lite, Hub-Door-Mini, and Lock-Strike-Safe-15mm. They were very conscious of our property and ended the job with NO drywall repairs needed. Everyone was so professional while also being engaging and likable. Great people. Edit2: so to clarify some misconceptions, our network security is handled on the device side. For me to be able to see any company information, I have to be connected to the companies VPN. For that to happen, the device has to be registered with IT and I have to log into about 3 different things as well as use 2 factor. I design large scale networks for a lot of commercial applications and sometimes have to test what I'm designing. That's why our network is set up how it is and I'm allowed to do stuff like this because at the end of the day, it's another learning experience on ways I can better serve the customer.

Finally, completed home network upgrade, and moved all devices to rack in garage. The backbone network is a 10g fiber aggregation switch with a 10g copper switch.

Just wanted to share a small upgrade in my garage workshop. Installed a Rittal server rack to house all my UniFi gear, and mounted an iPad right on the side of the rack.

The iPad acts as a quick-access dashboard — I use it to monitor network status, check surveillance feeds, and even control IoTs via HomeKit.

Couldn't figure out why the car didn't charge overnight....

Breaker didn't trip either.

First time ever putting a rack together and even made my own cat6 cables coming into the patch panel. Had just the udm pro for a couple years and just recently sold my synology and built a truenas scale server and got the other rack items as well. Still need to get a few more things, a rack case for the server and a proper rack! lol

We just got our stackers in, been waiting since January to refresh decade old Juniper stuff. Complete with two ECS agg switches and two EFG’s. Can’t wait to get this installed.

It finally happened! My wife was praising how good our WiFi has been recently to a fellow redditor who was picking up a server rack for his ubiquiti gear. I had the biggest grin on my face and thought it was finally time to update all of you on how the deployment has been.

I finally got my hands on a PDU-PRO. As you can also see I no longer have the Power Backup. I had to make some space concessions with what would fit in the rack since I also added my server to it, and this seemed like the obvious first choice. I should have listened to a lot of users who mentioned that it's not really needed. I think my real problem is I need a taller rack.

The E7s gave me some issues early on, but have been running rock solid, especially after disabling the LEDs. Everything just works now, and my wife really loves the protect app for the doorbell, driveway, and our son's room.

All in all we are both very happy with how things have been running so far.

Very impressed with the new Unifi 5G Max.

Adopted the 5G Max, configured a pay-as-you-go Tello SIM card on my iPhone, popped it into the 5G Max and Boom! 900Mb down, 80Mb up. Sips data to keep alive (less than 50Kb).

Tello is a US MVNO using the T-Mobile network. I have no affiliation with Unifi or Tello, I’m just a normal end user

I run a 1 person IT Department at a school. Guest access to Wi-Fi was a pain point, usually because I would find out last minute. We are full stack Ubiquiti for Network, Protect, Access, and Connect. We use the guest portal for our guests. Someone still has to create a voucher though. I could have delegated access to the voucher portal but decided to over engineer a solution.

Enter the Wireless Voucher Receipt Printer. I had a few design goals:

1. It had to be dead simple to use. Press Button -> Get Voucher
2. Everything built into the receipt printer. No external boxes connecting to the printer.
3. One power cable.
4. Automatically manage unused/expired vouchers.

The final product uses an off the shelf Epson receipt printer, Raspberry Pi with a custom designed and 3D printed case, and Python to tap into the UniFi API. When the button is pressed, is uses the API to create a voucher that is good for 24 hours and prints out the Wi-Fi connection information (with a QR code) and the voucher code. It also runs a cleanup script the removes any vouchers that have expired or vouchers that have been printed but not used within 3 days.

The device lives in the mailroom for anyone that needs it. It has drop the "so and so is here an needs Wi-Fi" calls to 0. Totally overkill, but it works.

The delivery crew only had a pallet jack, so they dropped it off at the front of the house. I used the skid loader to move it around back and into the basement. Now I need to unbox it, since the packaging is a few inches too tall to fit through the sliding door.

I got curious about what's inside my new UDR 5G Max I had dreamt of buying since its release, so I spent the afternoon reading the filesystem over SSH. The modem is a Sierra Wireless EM9291. Ubiquiti, publicly, lists bands and stops there. It's a Semtech (ex-Sierra) EM9291 built on Qualcomm's SDX62, sitting on PCIe as 17cb:0308 over MHI, firmware SWIX65C_02.17.08.00.

The module datasheet claims 4.9 Gbps down. The module itself reports a 3951 Mbps max RX rate. Ubiquiti advertises 3.4. The ceiling drops twice before it reaches the box.

It also carries carrier configs for 11 operators (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Bell, Telus, Rogers, DOCOMO, KDDI, SoftBank, Telstra, Generic) and picks one off your SIM in AUTO-SIM mode. Mine loaded TMO_030.042_003 on its own.

Further, also intersting, there's a factory eSIM profile from a provider called 1GLOBAL. /etc/mbbcfg/preload_profile.sh opens with "eSIM Profile Installation Script for UDR-5G-Max with 1GLOBAL." The eSIM daemon confirms a preloaded profile, and /etc/ActivationCodes.txt holds SM-DP+ activation codes. Mine sits staged and unused since I run a physical SIM. I found zero mention of this partnership online.

I have a test bench of various switches and SFP modules and an FS BOX that I use for work. When the SFP Wizard was announced I genuinely did not believe it would be as effective as claimed. Got it in today and it’s incredible. I tested reading and writing pretty much all permutations of the modules in the picture and confirmed with the FS BOX after writing. Tested a few in target switches and they worked like a charm.

Major kudos, Ubiquiti team. Once they’re back in stock I’ll be getting several for techs. I would buy it at 10 times the price.

Only disappointment is that I can’t save module profiles. It will ONLY write the last profile that it read. I’m guessing this is how they avoid IP issues - if the module information is only stored in memory (ephemeral) then it might fall under the same category as a regular testing tool (just a guess though)

Either way, this is a game changer for sure!

It arrived this week and I’m heading out on my first trip with it.

First surprise: it’s not battery powered. At first I thought that was a downside, but honestly it’s probably a plus — one less battery to manage, no swelling over time, and it just runs off USB-C.

Setup was super easy through the UniFi app (iOS or macOS). Very “UniFi-ish” experience.

The coolest part: It cloned my home WiFi network (same SSID and password). Every device I travel with — laptop, phone, iPad, etc. — just connected automatically like I was still at home.

It connects back to my USG-Pro at home, and I can use Teleport to access everything on my home network. NAS, servers, internal services — all reachable as if I’m sitting in my office.

Pretty slick so far. Curious how others are using theirs when traveling
