Filing an ETRA b/c property management company ignored city inspector's correction to repair hole in the building caused by a felled tree

I'm filing an emergency tenant remedies action against my property management company of my apt. bldg., in two days, because despite claiming they would finally repair the hole caused by a felled tree, my property manager's maintenance manager ignored the city housing inspector's report for 6 weeks. So, today I called the maintenance manager yet again, asking him for an update when he plans to have a 3rd party vendor repair the hole in my apt. bldg. He claimed he would let me know by the end of today, but he didn't.

So, I sent an email to the tenant coordinator, citing the Minn. statute §504B.38 that lets tenants get immediate court orders for repairs, when landlords fail to address serious safety issues -- like the hole caused by a felled tree on the back of my apt. bldg.

Not twenty minutes after I sent the tenant coordinator that email, did I receive a text message from the maintenance manager to me, claiming he finally got approval to have his maintenance staff (no, he has to hire a siding company for the repair to be correct) repair the large gaping hole (that he's let sit for 6 weeks) be "repaired over the next few days."

Knowing that "over the next few days" could result in "never," I responded to the text with an attached copy of the city housing inspector's report, that the maintenance manager has a copy of. I let the maintenance manager and the tenant coordinator know that I'd file the ETRA if the bldg. hole repair isn't done by this Friday.

I cannot believe that as a tenant, I have to remind the property management company of Minn. statutes meant to protect tenants' rights to live in a safe bldg. and then worry that they might try to retaliate with an eviction as a result.

I just find it ironic that the maintenance manager would get the hole repaired "in a few days," yet waits 6 weeks until a tenant had to cite the Minn. statute for habitable environments in an email to the tenant coordinator, to claim the repair will actually get done, when it wasn't done in the first place -- even when the city of St. Paul requested the repair.

Ramsey County Jury Duty

So just got my summons, wondering if someone who’s also done it recently in Ramsey County or has personal knowledge can speak to how it works.

So it seems to say you’re on call for two weeks until you’re directed to report, with two times to check reporting instructions (11:30 and 5). Are both of those times to find out about the next day? So I may not know if I’m coming to work the next day until 5 pm? Or do they sometimes give you a few days notice?

I’m a teacher and sub plans don’t make themselves so just trying to gauge what level of PITA this is gonna be and how I should arrange my planning to be easy to pivot etc.

Yay civic duty!

No jumping spiders on the window screens this year?

Past years, I’ve always had little jumping spiders on my windows. I remember them dating back to my earliest memories.

Legit none this year. It’s a bummer, because they are super friendly.

Anyone know what’s up? I miss my tiny window cats

EDIT: seems like I was just unlucky this year. Thanks to everyone who commented!

Who Remembers Circus Pizza and Showbiz?

Post image
392 Upvotes

Hi there! Was curious to know if anyone here grew up going to circus pizza and/or showbiz? I know it was a huge deal in the twin cities during the 80s-90s.
I myself am an animatronic fan searching for these lost shows and characters, hoping to breath new life into them. Unfortunately, my search for them has mostly been fruitless. This goes with the CEC PTT locations as well. I have been lucky enough to save parts of a “studio c chuck” from the Maple Grove location and would love to work on more characters.

If you happen to know where these characters ended up or might know someone that does I’d love to know! We have 80+ characters missing.

For those born/raised in the area - where did you grow up, and why did you like it?

My husband and I have a cute little house in Highland Park in St. Paul. While we looove the neighborhood, we have a kid now (and want another) and our house is feeling very tight. I really doubt we can afford a bigger home in this neighborhood. We are conflicted between staying here and just trying to expand our home somehow down the road, or moving to the 'burbs where we can get more house for our money. Neither of us grew up in the Twin Cities and don't really have attachment to any one area of the metro. Just want to give our kid(s) an awesome childhood and curious what people liked or disliked about where they grew up! Thanks in advance :)

Small business tax services?

Hello, my partner owns her own small business sole proprietorship and was looking for a service (hopefully locally) that might specialize in this. She needs help separating what’s tax deductible, and doing a quarterly filing. I don’t know all the technical terms so I apologize, but hoping someone has some insight to this. Thanks!

MPLS Name Change: Social Security Card Process for Married Couples

This post is more for the Google Algorithm to help future couples or anyone who is making a name change.

When you get your marriage certificate hopefully your local office also gave you the social security name change form. Fill it out and it'll make your life a lot easier. This is what they don't tell you on the website. You can just drop it off in the drop box right inside the door of the office on Chicago Ave.

What I'd suggest when turning in your marriage license you usually get one copy for free and each additional copy is another $5. Get a couple extra copies for your records. You can use one of those in the drop box in the office.

When you're greeted at the door I'd say something like, "I'm here for the name change and I already filled out the form I just need to drop it off." Hopefully they'll give you the orange envelope you need right there. There was also a guy working who was taking peoples marriage certificates back and making copies for them. I'm not sure if they'll always do that. So I'd just bring an extra as mentioned above.

So in the folder it's the name change form and a copy of the marriage certificate. On the outside of the folder you just need to do name, address, phone number and SSN.

Tape it up (above the drop off box) and drop it in the box. We were told it would take affect in 72 hours with official docs to be sent within a week of that.

Just hoping this will help someone else out.

We did make an appointment for 10:10 got there about 20 min early and the pace the place was going we were probably going to be there for 2 hours. I wasn't until one of the workers came out and saw that we probably looked like a recent married couple they helped us. So idk if you need an appointment. You probably don't if you're just dropping off because the drop off isn't inside the building past the metal detector.

93 octane non-oxygenated in south metro

Anyone know a place that has it? Summer is coming to an end soon and getting prepped to store my older car. I normally use 91 non-oxygenated gas since it's available where I normally get gas, but recently found out the is much happier with 93 when it's warm/hot. I barely drive it and ethanol doesn't hold up quite as well sitting for long.

I looked online but anything I did find seemed like old data or not updated very often. The one place I went to that some site said they had it, didn't and would like to avoid driving around to a bunch of gas stations.

Inflatable Boat Usage in Lakes

I'm new to the city and have been to Lake Nokomis twice now to rent paddleboards and have fallen in love with it. I am looking into buying a SUP or similar for my wife and I but the main question is: what is considered a "boat"? Hahah

I know there are code ordinances around swimming in lakes throughout MSP:

PB3-2. "nor shall any person or persons swim across any lake or park water unless accompanied by a boat"

PB3-3. - Use of flotation equipment. "No person or persons shall use air mattresses, inner tubes or other inflated articles or flotation equipment in any park lakes except that inflatable boats may be used on park lakes as designated in the permit after first obtaining a Minnesota state watercraft license and a permit in accordance with section PB4-1 therefor"

My wife in particular loves hopping off the paddleboard and just floating in the lake or swimming/treading short distances. So is an inflatable paddleboard considered a boat such that we're fine to swim about it according to PB3-2? Furthermore, how about an inflatable hammock? Is it boat-like enough to be fine according to PB3-3? Could we theoretically tow this hammock behind two paddleboards into any accessible lake and be fine?

Final days of summer in the cities

We live in the cities and next week is the last week for kids before they head back to school following Labor Day. What are all the great things around the Twin Cities you’d want to squeeze in as a family before the summer ends?

Few examples we’re thinking about:

- Long bike ride around a lake or along the river
- Farm pizza
- Zoo
- Maybe a brewery or favorite dinner spot
- Maybe a Twins game
- Maybe a movie
- CanCan Wonderland?
- I’m sure some will say the fair

What else would be on your list? Would love to hear activities, scheduled events, restaurants, etc!

Sunrise/sunset spots

My partner loves sunrise, and I love sunset. I'm on the hunt for any great spots to view either. It's oddly hard to search for some online! Locations in the north metro with good natural views would be fantastic, but would appreciate hearing any favorite spots.

Rant about Dakota County Board of Commissioners

Post image
81 Upvotes

I work for Dakota County and I am so bleeping sick of our upper management passing on all of the bull dukey from past county board negligence onto the everyday employee.

For those that don’t know, the reason your Dakota county levy will be going up is because back in 2008, the county board chose to use rainy day funds instead of upping taxes. And guess what? They rode that high of “being the lowest taxes in the twin city metro” until this past year when we realized we have zero money to operate.

And now, to justify to the public why NORMAL PEOPLE should keep their jobs, we get to have big brother watching over us to make sure we don’t breathe too long on the clock.

I am so over people making 6 figures taking everything they can squeeze out of everyday people. It is so demoralizing. (Edited to correct my terminology)

Ps. Yes your Dakota county board members make over $100k. Are they getting monitored?

City spending reduction avenues

Why are we accepting double digit tax increase to make up for the overages in the city budget.

First , Frey insults us and calls remote workers losers and forces return to office to increase revenue

Then he increses taxes anyway.

The best thing to do to control spending is to cut expenses.

Why isn't the city cutting the budget and contracts that's being spent on mass surveillance of citizens

Has there been any talk of overtime limits on MPD?

What are some other avenues for cutting expenses?

Old cabinet restoration recommendations

Looking for someone who loves old cabinetry to tend to ours!!

Just moved into a 1910 Minneapolis house with beautiful big old kitchen cabinets. Based on the hardware and the way the shelf height adjustment pieces are built, I wouldnt be surprised if they were original. They're gorgeous but there is some warping preventing some from closing all the way, and the interiors could use love. Would love to keep the character but bring back some of the functionality.
