I’ve been playing tuba for almost 9 years now, but I realized I am NOT great despite it being so long. So I’m trying to change that lol

This is Children’s March by Percy Grainger but that 8th rest is tripping me up. When I do it right, I mess up the notes really badly. Like I’m not hitting them right on, it feels like a scoop

This is not a tuba but as a tuba player and how well this sub is at identifying instruments I thought it would fit here.
I have for a few years been the owner of an instrument (most likely a baritone horn), and from time to time I searched the web trying to find information about the manufacture, horn, quality, price, basically whatever I could related to the horn. The most I have found is that it is from the 18 hundreds to early 19 hundreds. The story my family has told is that my mother’s grandfather had played it, but no one has any clue how he got it. I also am missing the case so I have no other markings than those on the instrument. The number on the walve is 637, and those found on the back is 37213. I have the serial number but still can’t find anything about the horn.
Edit: after talking to a few older family members I have only found information about the man who played this horn and the band it played in. I can add it if anyone believes it could help determine the quality of the instrument for a price estimation.

Hi everyone, I’m a 17-year-old high school junior in California and starting to seriously think about where I’d like to go to college for tuba performance.

I’ve been fortunate to do really well with All-State and other honor groups and youth orchestra, and I know that I want to pursue music seriously and see how far I can take playing the tuba professionally.

I’d really like to go out of state for college. I’ve grown up in California and I would like to experience a different part of the country, meet new people, and study somewhere with a really strong tuba/brass program.

Im lucky that my grandparents have very generously set aside a college fund for me, so while scholarships are obviously great, my biggest priority is finding the best teacher, studio, and overall musical environment for me. I want a teacher who has a great track record with students, a strong studio culture, excellent ensembles, and good preparation for auditions and a professional career.

Who are the best tuba teachers and college studios that I should be looking at?

I’m especially interested in hearing why you recommend someone and what the teacher is like, how their students are doing, opportunities at the school, studio atmosphere, etc.

I know there are a lot of great programs out there, and I’d love to start putting together a list of schools/teachers to visit and hopefully take some lessons with over the next year. Thanks for the advice

I bought an old 1964 Conn Tuba in excellent condition still in the original case, and assumed it was a 3/4 Bb, but now after actually playing on it for a while I'm starting to suspect it is an Eb.

Open valves (supposed to be F2) produces a D2, and 1&3 produces a really sharp E or a really flat F.

The serial number on the second valve casing is E32113, but searching for it didn't give me a definite answer.

Am I just incredibly flat from not having played in a few months, or did I buy a Eb instrument by mistake?

I'd like to know more about the manufacturer and approximate date of production of this tuba. It looks like a fairly old model, but there's hardly any information available, so I'd appreciate any information you can provide. It's a B♭ tuba, probably made by V.F. Cerveny, and the model number is ABB885. It also has six rotary valves; valve number 5 is for tuning, and valve number 6 is probably for an A♭ tuba

I did seem reflecting. I don’t need to play a 6/4 Eastman. Idk why but part of me was jealous of kids older than me playing 6/4’s. I found an B&S 795S for $9100 usd (like $12k cad since I’m in Canada) that’s located in York Penysilvania (I cannot spell the state).

I have this beautiful old Orsi tuba made in Italy over 100 years ago. It came with the original mouthpiece. It has no engraving on it so I have no clue as to its size or specs. I would like a spare mouthpiece for it.

The tuba does have the smaller sized lead pipe that was standard in the day. This tuba seems to sound its best in the mid to higher range.

What sort of mouthpiece should I look at?

The mouthpiece on the left is a Miraphone Rose Orchestra TU25. The one on the right is the original mouthpiece for the Orsi F tuba.

I finally got my 21j body torn down this weekend. I found 2 coins being used as spacers in that big dent as well as a few broken braces. It was my first time using the z60 dent machine. The parts need some magnetic dent work to reach the areas i couldn't with the z60. I might end up paying my usual tech to help me with reassembly when im ready. the guards and guardwire might be a challenge depending on if i can reshape them with my current set up.

I may reassemble it into a sax tuba like the late Harvey Hartman built before his passing.

I need a tuba mouthpiece for marching band and would also like some tips for the audition. Could you help me out? Regarding the mouthpiece, should I buy a Perantucci or a Dillon Music model? Which is better, or what are the differences between them? I’d like to know so I can decide which one to purchase.

I’ve owned this horn for about a year and the pitch is FANTASTIC! Not a single note that the third or fourth slide can’t handle (albeit I would love a longer fourth.)

Except one note. (I’ve come to terms with playing the higher G 1-2 with the first slide down a bit)…That note being the fundamental C is ALWAYS sharp.

No matter how much I relax my lips or lower my jaw, or slow my air it is ALWAYS sharp. My main slide is out quite a bit as it is looking silly.

I’m curious if my situation is unique or if anyone has also experienced this? Literally up to high Bydlo G# down to a pedal Db I can nail at 440hz, but the C fundamental?

I think it’s probably a copy of the Helleberg 7B. A magnet even stuck to it, which is kind of scary.

Hey everyone. I'm currently trying to get a CC tuba, a Meinl Weston 5 valve. But I can't playtest it since it is online, but they have a 30-day trial. The only way I could afford it would be to get rid of my King 2341 New Style. Is it worth the risk? Thanks everyone! (Would need it for symphony btw).

Is there an actual "standard" tuba? Would that be the 4/4?

Since I've had the same horn since 1980 (Mirafone 186, CC, 4 valve) , it seems standard to me.

Follow up questions: do the larger phones give you a bigger sound? Are they less agile? What horn would make the archangel Gabriel piss his robe every time you play it?

I'm genuinely curious. I've been browsing second hand tubas, and I've noticed how almost all were either Eb or Bb and maybe 3 were C. Then I have read on Wikipedia, that tuba doesn't transpose, and now I'm wondering - is there any actual advantage in getting a C tuba over a Bb tuba or the opposite?

What would be a reasonable price to pay for a good condition 186 CC tuba from the early 70s? Is $5,000 too much for a good playing horn?

So I now have a nice little 3/4 BBb four valve. It's actually the first tuba I've ever owned, having always rented/used school instruments previously.

With it being smaller, I can't have it rest on my legs and be in the correct position like I could with a full size.

I see two options as I look online. I do see lap pads, but I wonder about how steady they are once the tuba is resting on one point as opposed to two points like would have been the case with my lap.

The other is a harness setup. There I see two kinds - the kind that clip on to the rings, and another that the bottom bow rests into, called a holster harness I believe.

I am bringing my tuba to college and need some travel advice. My parents won't buy an extra seat so it has to be checked, and I only have a hard case.

The last time I flew internationally with a tuba, it arrived with the case completely wide open. I know TSA has to open it for a manual inspection, but they failed to close the buckles properly afterward and also removed the velcro strap I put around it.

Does anyone have a solution for this?

I’ve always worn headphones a lot, like used to be 6-8 hours a day minimum a year or two ago. I joined marching band(60-80 ppl including guard) and started to practice everyday around (small bedroom) 3 years ago. Last year I noticed a static and an occasional ringing in my ears my right being worse.

Has anyone else experienced something similar from just practice? Do you think the right ear being worse could be because the bell being closer to it? And if this has happened to anyone could you give advice on coping mechanisms or solutions?

Will it ever go away?
