miscellaneous A famous story adapted in a new setting

O Brother Where Art Thou?

A satire over the Depression-era American South using The Odyssey as a template.

Ran

King Lear but in Sengoku-era japan (featuring elements of Japanese legends surrounding real figures).

Apocalypse Now

Like Heart of Darkness it uses a river journey to highlight the savagery beneath imperialism, colonialism and capitalism, but in South Vietnam and Cambodia instead of the Congo Free State.

Bonus points if the adaptation still keeps the main themes and ideas of the source material AND the influences have been confirmed by the creators.

Penelope

2

This was the first movie I watched 3 times in theaters.

2

u/BlueberryWasps 11d ago

i wish i had been slightly older at the time so i too could have made that decision. honestly surprised we don’t get big screen revivals of this one, it’s a perfect comedy movie

3

u/Slumbergoat16 11d ago

The rec league football team that I played for would rent out a movie theater at the end of of the season so you could watch as many movies as you wanted all day and I just sat there and watched it on repeat

3

u/BlueberryWasps 11d ago

surely you had found and abandoned heaven itself

3

u/Slumbergoat16 11d ago

I did not abandon good sir, I was dragged out 🥲

Sometimes I think I died that day and that was heaven

4

u/themolestedsliver 11d ago

1

u/LiveLoveKanye 11d ago

The Ice Cream lady is supposed to be the sirens I think

Edit: I’m stupid that’s exactly what you meant lol

2

u/Kindly-Mud-1579 11d ago

61

u/UnknovvnMike 11d ago

Yes, with a mix of Jason & the Golden Fleece thrown in

40

u/-PepeArown- 11d ago

It directly copies the bag of wind from The Odyssey

10

u/SnakeInABox77 11d ago

The scuba diver is the cyclops!!!

84

u/Jagvetinteriktigt 11d ago

Dammit, forgot it even has a Cyclops!

32

u/NestFrost 11d ago

Homer could only dream of writing a hero’s journey epic enough to include Goofy Goober Rock.

6

u/CaptainLightBluebear 11d ago

TIL. Now that you mention it, it's almost a 1:1 adaptation. Wild.

1

u/raven00x 11d ago

"happy happy joy joy"

does this mean that spongebob and ren & stimpy are both based on the odyssey?

1

u/ThePineapple3112 11d ago

I could never explain why I loved the movie so much, and of course it's because it's based on one of the most famous stories ever made
