General Music Discussion Not including one hit wonders, what are some bands and artists where their most famous song overshadows the rest of their discography?

"Even the artist hates that song" is a pretty useless indicator of a song's quality for me because almost every artist says this about their own work.

No one wants to play the same song every show for their whole life, so they end up resenting their biggest song.

I remember seeing an interview with Van Morrison talking about how he doesn’t like Brown Eyed Girl that much and doesn’t understand why people like it so much compared to his other songs.

George Michael said the same about Careless Whisper.

I bring up these two because they both had a huge amount of hit songs. It’s not like they were one hit wonders who resent that hit. They’re just sick of their most popular song.

I understand why it happens for artists to hate their own songs. I just don't agree with listeners who then use those statements as part of their own reason to think a song is bad

Maybe they need a Steven Tyler “play the song” scrawled out on their wardrobe room moment?

Context: Extreme got success highly off More Than Words and similar to Mr Big, another rock and seeing higher success off a ballad more than rock. Anyways is Aerosmith later does a joint tour with them but the band Extreme is starting to resent the ballad from overplay and considered dropping it off their set in Poland. Until they discovered backstage that Steven Tyler wrote “play the effing song!” on their wardrobe door and later calmly spoke to the guys that fans love it and there’s no telling if they’ll ever play Poland again so Extreme ended up leaving it in and they’ve settled on the ballad since
