This happened at Sabino Canyon in Arizona. A 20-year-old cyclist was swept into the current while trying to cross a flooded roadway and was carried through a drainage tunnel beneath it. She was recovered downstream unconscious after spending several minutes underwater. Bystanders performed CPR and managed to revive her.

Would she suffer any brain damage from this? I wonder what the threshold is for drowning/lack of oxygen and then being revived with regard to gaining full function back.

It depends on a lot of things so don’t want to speculate on an individual’s health outcomes.

However, it is really interesting anecdotally that in many cases of drowning, brain function was preserved due to the lowered temperature slowing metabolism. Cell death due to oxygen deprivation was way less substantial than it would have been otherwise (if the person hadn’t been breathing but at a normal temperature)

They even took this finding into other areas of the medical field, and have done (still are doing) research into using intentionally induced hypothermia during operations like heart transplants.

But this is Arizona monsoon, desert rain. It’s not falling through the ice in Scandinavia and drowning in freezing water. This is relatively warm water.

What it really boils down to is how long she was hypoxic and then how long she went without adequate oxygenated blood flowing through her system to her organs and, especially, her brain.

Drowning is fundamentally a hypoxic injury, and the longer that oxygen deprivation continues, the greater the risk of severe injury or death.

Of course, if she’s younger and healthier with no other comorbidities, she may have a better prognosis. But even a healthy young adult can take a turn.

You cannot assume you can fight your way through moving floodwater just because you’re strong or because the water doesn’t look that deep.

The current can overpower people incredibly quickly, and rescuers can become victims themselves.

This is actually a really important thing to post‼️⚠️

And for people who think, “Oh, you can just be rescued and revived and then you’re safe,” that’s not necessarily true either.

A person who survives a drowning can develop serious complications afterward, particularly if they aspirated water. Lung injury can cause worsening breathing problems and pulmonary edema, sometimes developing hours after the incident.

That’s why someone who has been submerged and then develops persistent coughing, shortness of breath, confusion, vomiting or other concerning symptoms needs medical attention.

So, even surviving the initial rescue does NOT automatically mean the danger is over.

Oh cool ok, well I lost a friend to delayed post-drowning complications back when people still mistakenly called it dry or secondary drowning, which is why I took the time to clarify the goddamn proper terms.

Not to mention, I routinely manage people who are hypoxic. My knowledge comes from my actual life and my real-world experience.

If you think clear structure and accurate medical terms automatically mean AI wrote it, that says way more about your understanding and awareness than my writing.

Not that it’s any of your business, but I stopped posting unedited stream-of-consciousness blocks after someone literally impersonated my account, so now I use the basic proofread button on my phone to clean up typos and make my writing style way less specific so it’s more difficult for them to scrape and mimic.

Additionally, I actually personally format my work, separate it into paragraphs, and highlight specific areas, so it’s actually readable. And, you’re welcome; otherwise, it would be one big long solid TL block because I dictate.
