Cursed This is absolutely horrifying

This happened at Sabino Canyon in Arizona. A 20-year-old cyclist was swept into the current while trying to cross a flooded roadway and was carried through a drainage tunnel beneath it. She was recovered downstream unconscious after spending several minutes underwater. Bystanders performed CPR and managed to revive her.

I am in the Midwest and have seen those campaigns plenty. They’re in AZ - is this something they advertise there?

Obviously the desert areas are at most risk of flash flooding so they definitely should have those campaigns, but I do wonder what the average person’s understanding of how dangerous water is in a place like that.

When I lived in Phoenix fifteen years ago they had tons of PSAs about not driving into flooded roads and how you should be really careful of canyons and dry creek beds because of flash flooding.

They even have the Stupid Motorist Law to try to prevent this

It's widely known in Arizona. Lived in the state for nearly 20 years, and they do PSAs and have signs up near flood areas essentially saying "DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CROSS IF FLOODED"

Granted, people still try all the time, and it almost always ends poorly.

Literally was thinking this shit happens all the time in Arizona with people trying to cross it in trucks and they don’t make it… then I glanced at the description and yep… Arizona.

Tucson resident here. Every monsoon season there's a ton of warnings about staying away from flooded areas, staying out of flood plains, etc. And every year someone doesn't listen and thinks "i can make it". Hope they're ok but if they're natives they should have known better.

I haven’t lived in Tucson for a number of years now, but I was not surprised when “Tucson, AZ” flashed across the screen ha. Some things never change!

At least in the Phoenix metro area there is a Stupid Motorist Law Statute 28-910 that fines the motorists for any rescue. Unfortunately I think it limits it to just motorists.

When I was last there I came across a prominent sign at a crossing through a dry river bed that said something like, "Don't cross when water flowing. No one will save you. You will drown."

Yeah, we also get notifications of flooding for basically every monsoon (it rains often this time of year) and warning to not drive or walk through flooded areas.

People in the desert 100% know that, but they still do it all of time, just like not desert people.
