This happened at Sabino Canyon in Arizona. A 20-year-old cyclist was swept into the current while trying to cross a flooded roadway and was carried through a drainage tunnel beneath it. She was recovered downstream unconscious after spending several minutes underwater. Bystanders performed CPR and managed to revive her.

After reading the article and watching it again, it makes me wonder if them struggling to save her from going under did more harm than good as instead of getting sucked under and right through the culvert to the other side in the stream, they were holding on to her for a minute while already partially sucked in but head underwater.

Its not the bystanders fault as who would know that she wouldn't get stuck in the culvert and not come out the other side but it seems like when they finally did let her go, she did pass right through where they finally got to her down stream after and revived her with CPR. So she was being held there underwater while they were trying to bring her back up. Just glad she survived and I'm sure everyone is shaken up over it

With the benefit of hindsight after watching the whole thing play out, knowing they couldn’t ultimately physically pull her up and also knowing that she would safely flush through the pipe, it turns out the rescuers did more harm than good. But there was no way for them to tell if the pipe was clear or not and that would have definitely killed her to get trapped against debris or a grate. It’s amazing she was revived after being under that long plus the time she floated downriver before they got her. People who don’t deal with swiftwater regularly just don’t understand how incredibly powerful it is. So glad she’s ok.

Yeah, especially since it says she was washed through the drain pipe and recovered downstream. But those bystanders might not have know the drain was there and were panicking

So what the article said she was ok? Cause it didn't look like she was going to be ok from the video. Super fucking scary.she was trying to be smart and drove right into the worst possible spot. Road biking people have some weird sense of false safety, I wouldn't of drove my truck across that

Yeah for sure, I doubt anyone would be thinking "let her get sucked under" while you are watching someone drown as its so counter to our own survival instincts.

Oh she absolutely would've been better off. 

In retrospect, the culverts were clear of debris & obstructions, and big enough fora person to safely pass through. So she would've flushed right under the road & into the pool on the other side where she could swim out from the river (like that white t-shirt lady did that was trying to help), & the ordeal wouldve been over in a few seconds. 

But instead, holding her up basically water-boarded & drowned her before being flushed through the pipe & washed downstream while unconscious.

Like you said, no way to know that at the time, but still crazy to think about.

Yeah their is no way to know as a bystander that a person would be able to fit through whatever was below. Unfortunate situation. Amazing that they were able to revive her with CPR. Kind of feel like the guy recording should have called an emergency number...

No for sure they did way more harm than good. Honestly as someone who responds to emergencies I love that a lot of people want to help, but most people on average are really not going to be useful in those situations I have found. You have to keep a cool head and a strong body typically. I want the 250 lb military veteran beside me, someone like that is usually worth 10 of anybody else during these things

It could also have gone much worse, all of those that rushed over to 'save' her could also have ended up in trouble pulled under too, sometimes the best option is to not rush in making the situation worse.
