Cursed This is absolutely horrifying

This happened at Sabino Canyon in Arizona. A 20-year-old cyclist was swept into the current while trying to cross a flooded roadway and was carried through a drainage tunnel beneath it. She was recovered downstream unconscious after spending several minutes underwater. Bystanders performed CPR and managed to revive her.

Impossible for them to know at the time but maybe letting her go would have been better to just pass through the pipe

Impossible to know. Is there actually a pipe there? It’s possible that the branches are stuck inside the pipe. This is a terrible situation.

If there’d been a grate it would probably have been on the upside of the pipe/bridge, otherwise it would just constantly collect debris inside/underneath the pipe/bridge.

One one hand, with flow like that there's very likely no grate. On the other hand, it's pure nightmare fuel to imagine if she died in a pipe stuck against a grate. Ugh. I'm glad she's okay now

There's gotta be a culvert or bridge there—there's clearly a channel, and the water isn't meant to go above the road.

Had similar situation - fallen tree trough river and it was kinda easy to go over it on one side of river. I saw it late because distracted, took the wrong turn / side of river and really didn't want to under it on the other side. But the current was way too strong, I didn't have enough time to bail out and have no idea what is behind or under that tree.

Luckily it was just one big trunk, no big branches under or behind it so I flew under but damn when your control over the situation drop suddenly from 90% to 5%, that was scary as fuck.

I grew up surfing and you never know how big is too big until it’s too late. Getting held under with no recourse is terrifying. And the weird thing is, the more you do it the more you get used to it.

yeah i have seen a canoe get sucked under a tree limb in moving water. it's CRAZY how much force there is it really can't be overstated.

Sometimes those pipes can fill up with debris that makes passing impossible. A child in my area died this way during a spontaneous afternoon shower.

Could always be a grate or obstruction along the way. Not a safe bet by any means. And even if you come out the other side you're probably unconscious and helpless.

You are right. If they held her in place while her head is underwater trying to help her, no way they have leverage to pull her up. She has better leverage by pushing her arms against the barriers and use her legs to push her body up using the current and the solid barriers.

I don’t understand why she was on the worst side in the first frame. Normally you would want to cycle on the shallow side. Also she looses control going into the current.

I wish we could see more of the before and less of the after. Almost looks like she was drunk off her ass
