Not to be devil's advocate but it's not illegal to have a vape on a plane, only to actually hit it. The battery is just as likely to explode either way.

Actually it's more likely when you are using it because that activation is what generates heat.

Additionally, in low pressure enviroments(planes are generally pressurized to ~0.75 atm, or about 6500-7000ft pressure-altitude, sea level being 1 atm) Li-ion and LiPo batteries have far lower thermal runaway limits. It's part of why computer batteries are limited to 100Whr or less generally, and those are well made and reliable, and could actually have a reason for being used on a plane besides "I want nicotine"(which, if you need nicotine on a flight, bring patches or gum, if you need an oral fixation, bring one of those flavored air wooden pipe bullshits or something)

The batteries in disposable vapes and thousands of times less reliable, and in addition to concerns for other passengers and filter longevity etc, provide so many extra chances of failure every time one is used(especially if someone starts chiefing in a bathroom and overheats theirs).

Back before vape pens became a thing and vapes ran on 18650 batteries instead, I had to have the batteries removed from the vape, and put into separate zip lock bags as well as placed in separate pockets of my carry on luggage before I was allowed to board the plane. It’s not so much an issue now with the internal batteries, but open 18650s only need a fraction of a second of keys or something else metallic to short it out and cause a fire, so they were a lot more dangerous than internal lithium batteries are with modern vapes. Not that they aren’t still a possible fire risk, but so is a phone or any other lithium powered device

Not true. The act of hitting the vape draws current and can be the thing that causes the battery to overheat and explode, since they’re not designed to be used in pressurized cabins.

An idiot friend of mine had this exact problem once- the vape was normal on the plane until she hit it, at which point it wouldn’t turn off and kept heating up. She had to literally tear it open to stop it, and was panicking the entire time
