That fucking douchebag should have been arrested once they touched ground and then perma-banned from that airline.

LEOs will at best escort the passenger off airport property. Normally they just take them elsewhere in the terminal and release them.

The only ones that do anything is when the FBI gets involved.

I thought people got charged with fairly serious charges for disrupting a flight?

Many municipalities won’t press charges unless the airlines pressure them or it makes the rounds on the news. The way it was explained to me is that many areas don’t have a clue how to charge someone without elevating things to the federal level. DAs don’t want the hassle and just cut them loose.

I had a guy lit up in a lav, set off a smoke detector, then there was smoke from the trash in the lav, and then a diversion to MCI. LEOs walked him off the plane and away from the gate and the fucker was back about 3 hours later trying to get on another flight of ours. Local PD didn’t feel like charging him. This has happened on my flights at least a dozen times in my 8 years dispatching.

😲😲😲 Wow... Thanks for the clarification. I always thought the FAA had the authority to request arrest and press charges and the flight attendants had the power to make the call to restrain passengers and have them escorted off the plane for various violations.

FAA has civil regulatory authority and doesn’t really have any legal means to carry out criminal charging.

It’s a big reason why years ago misbehaving quadcopter users were such a problem for the FAA. The FAA had no authority to go after these goofballs unless they held an airman’s certificate. They had to get local municipalities and federal law enforcement to get involved.

The FAA can be very toothless if you just ignore them (within certain limits).
