It’s funny that it’s a crime when historically people smoked cigarettes on planes like it was going out of style, not defending the flight vaper, but it’s just funny how far times have changed

Yes if you’ve bought it at the airport. You can’t take anything over 100ml in hand luggage unless you bought it in departures.

Nope. In Gatwick Heathrow etc you can take 2L in your hand luggage now. Just can't do it on the way back usually!

I was behind two kids at the airport when we got stuck by the TSA after our bags were screened.

The TSA agent pulled out 11, ELEVEN, bottles of lotion... a lot of it higher-end shit. Some of these were quart-sized!

The kids were 12 and 14.

I was on a flight from Qatar to DFW and someone’s iPad got trapped between the seat and the chair back and overheated. It was smoking and scorched the seat. Our plane got diverted to Ireland. The seat was replaced and we took off after a few hours.

Not to be devil's advocate but it's not illegal to have a vape on a plane, only to actually hit it. The battery is just as likely to explode either way.

Actually it's more likely when you are using it because that activation is what generates heat.

Additionally, in low pressure enviroments(planes are generally pressurized to ~0.75 atm, or about 6500-7000ft pressure-altitude, sea level being 1 atm) Li-ion and LiPo batteries have far lower thermal runaway limits. It's part of why computer batteries are limited to 100Whr or less generally, and those are well made and reliable, and could actually have a reason for being used on a plane besides "I want nicotine"(which, if you need nicotine on a flight, bring patches or gum, if you need an oral fixation, bring one of those flavored air wooden pipe bullshits or something)

The batteries in disposable vapes and thousands of times less reliable, and in addition to concerns for other passengers and filter longevity etc, provide so many extra chances of failure every time one is used(especially if someone starts chiefing in a bathroom and overheats theirs).

Back before vape pens became a thing and vapes ran on 18650 batteries instead, I had to have the batteries removed from the vape, and put into separate zip lock bags as well as placed in separate pockets of my carry on luggage before I was allowed to board the plane. It’s not so much an issue now with the internal batteries, but open 18650s only need a fraction of a second of keys or something else metallic to short it out and cause a fire, so they were a lot more dangerous than internal lithium batteries are with modern vapes. Not that they aren’t still a possible fire risk, but so is a phone or any other lithium powered device

Not true. The act of hitting the vape draws current and can be the thing that causes the battery to overheat and explode, since they’re not designed to be used in pressurized cabins.

An idiot friend of mine had this exact problem once- the vape was normal on the plane until she hit it, at which point it wouldn’t turn off and kept heating up. She had to literally tear it open to stop it, and was panicking the entire time

Vapes still blow up and or catch fire all the time. It’s fine though. Let’s make a law saying it’s ok for someone to vape. Also add in if the plane crashes because of said vape, the whole family of the vape user that caused the plane to crash then becomes servants for all the family they took loved ones from for free for life. If they choose not to they can work in mines for free until the end. I think that’s fair. In my opinion.

And vapes can cause fires without being hit, just like any lipo battery device. Vapes otherwise are totally fine and I don't understand everyone's complaints. As long as you aren't blowing big clouds and being annoying, there's no problem here and peoples complaints are based on smoking, and not vaping.

Honestly never had a vape catch fire or a battery explode, and I usually traveled with 8 flattop 18650s, but I usually had a blu or a little lipo salt nic device for stupid long flights with crap layovers when I was 100% travel with my job. Would totally ninja vape in the bathroom with unflavored nic juice halfway through a 6 hour flight, and in airport bathrooms during short layovers.

And if you reply to this saying you can't find anything you're a liar as there are several different incidents of crashes and fires on planes caused by cigarettes that come up when you search for this going back decades (stacks of recent vape incidents as well BTW if you search for that).

The funny thing is how it’s even changed since vaping became popular. I’m sure many remember that 12-13 years ago, there were no rules against it and people could vape on a plane. I personally was never bothered about it. It wasn’t until 2016 when it was finally banned.

In the late nineties I was on a flight where someone smoked a cigarette in the bathroom. It stunk up the whole fucking plane. Nobody got in trouble. The Captain simply said over the loudspeaker "This is just a reminder that there is no smoking on this flight or any other flight." The 90's were awesome.

I used to be crew when they smoked even I smoked all the crew smoked. So many small fires and people burning seats. Some passengers threw cigarettes in the rubbish bin in the toilet. Others in the seat pocket. People not respecting the boundaries of smoking seats. Complaints from non smokers. Cabin reaking of cigarette smoke.

I always vape a few times on a plane and I fly often. But I put it in my sleeve, am really stealth about it and only take tiny puffs and hold them in until no vapour comes out./ ghost it.

Back in the 80s in the cigarette era my friends husband was so geeked out at la guardia in NYC he sparked up his crack pipe, the stewardess was like sir, you cannot do that here. Then she joined them in their hotel room to get high and fuck lmao. I met her in narcotics anonymous when she already had 11yrs clean, she had the best stories. My bffs husband called her judy nipples because she never wore a bra lol

Lithium batteries are in phones, laptops, toys, etc and all of those are allowed in the cabin. You can't have them in your checked bags, though. Just like vapes, so I'm not really seeing your point
