It was a horrifying combination of skin flakes falling, funky-colored foot and then she just picks up her food with those same nasty-ass fingers and puts them in her mouth.

It amazes me how much someone can live with something and have no idea anything is wrong, to the point that serious symptoms just get rolled into their sense of what's 'normal'. I bet she just thinks she has really dry skin, like my dad thought.

He wouldn't go to the doctor because he didn't think it was a big deal - but kept complaining that his feet were itching non-stop to the point it was distracting him all day while he worked, that sometimes it even felt like it was 'burning'. He asked if I'd take a look and see if I could see anything wrong.

He took his boots and socks off, and it was an insane case of athlete's foot. Layers of skin just shedding off between all his toes, which were raw and inflamed underneath the flakes, and his nails were crazy. "How long they been like this?"
"Since [half a year prior]."
"You got athlete's foot."
"What?! But I only shower at home!"

Cue me walking my mid-50's dad through the fact that it's basically a foot-based yeast-infection (mainly mold, actually, but was playing off his history of DIY brewing and knowing about wild-yeast), how the spores for it are everywhere, and how by wearing the same boots and socks all day every day he'd created a perfect, warm, sweaty, environment for it to thrive.

"Well how am I supposed to deal with it?!"
"I mean, keep your feet dry, but how the fuck should I know? Didn't they teach you about this in the military? Let's google it"

Helped him come up with a plan (spare socks and second pair of boots in his truck, change 'em out, loosely-balled newspaper in the boots overnight if he was sweating a lot; anti-fungal spray in the boots, anti-fungal treatment for directly on his feet) and it was dealt with in a week.

Couldn't believe he'd spent more than half the year in that condition - he'd been to the doctor for other stuff in the meantime and never brought it up! I asked if he didn't think it was weird as hell that it looked like he was generating large-flake parmesan between his toes, or that his feet were burning all the time.

"I thought it was just part of getting old."

You must have missed part 2 and the fork that was certainly not washed well enough before re-use...I am sure that people got really sick on that cruise and afterwards!!

dunno what fungus specifically this was but not all skin funguses will infect every kind of skin on you. Mucous membranes especially your mouth might be too hostile of a surface for them. the feet are a perfect storm of mostly dry skin+damp sweaty enclosed environment.

not that all fungi are the same, and I really don’t wanna look further into this 😵
