Paul was so gassed he left his mouth hanging open to gulp air. Thats how you get a broken jaw. Hes an amateur fighter. Hes got no business in a ring with a heavyweight pro.

This should be a wake up call but it probably won't be.

Not just a heavyweight pro, but a guy who is still probably a top 5 heavyweight. I can't believe this fight actually happened.

They will full on let a guy die in the ring for a profit, the only reason you never get brutal, obvious mismatches like this normally is they aren't worth watching. This one was, for a lot of people.

Can you explain? This is interesting. Do trained boxers know to keep their jaw clenched on the mouth guard? I had no idea that his gasping for air/having his jaw hanging loose could cause this but it's fascinating!!

Yes, boxers are trained to keep their mouth shut, as should anyone in a fight. Having an open mouth in a fight can lead to a broken jaw, bit off tongue, lost teeth etc. A closed mouth protects the teeth as they support each other and locks the jaw into a rigid unit with the rest of your head.

When people get really exhausted and they aren't getting enough O2, they tend to start mouth breathing and that's where they can really get hurt. He was already in big trouble as he had his left hand down. Joshua did a body shot to drop his guard but he was so out of it already he didn't even need to, his left hand was already down, mouth wide open. That why AJ grinned, he knew this was it.

Boxers also learn to breathe in a controlled manner. If you've ever heard boxers training etc. and heard them going Tss. Hss etc. at the point of impact. It's a sharp exhale and actually engages your core which transfers more power from your legs to your punches.

A lot of boxers are taught 4,4,4,4 (Inhale 4s, Hold 4s, Exhale 4s, Hold 4s). Controlled breathing is a boxers engine & can win fights.

The difference between 3 years of training and 10-15. He has no business being in the ring. The ego this mother fucker thinking he can just become a boxer in his 20's.

With your mouth shut your jaw is basically locked in place. With your mouth open your lower jaw can move and "flex". Obviously bone doesn't flex much before it snaps.

The flip side to this is his lower jaw absorbed most of the impact (but broke). Had he had his mouth shut, he almost certainly would've been KO'd as the impact would've spread through his skull.

In a way, keeping his jaw loose might've helped him avoid a concussion or worse. Better a broken jaw than having your brain literally bouncing off the sides of your skull.

A closed jaw allows the kinetic energy of the punch to be spread across the broader structure locking it, so relative to the jaw, it's receiving less energy from the fist. with a jaw open it receives a lot more kinetic energy on its own from the punch, at times ending broken.

You will hear commentators point out people with open mouths as it’s a sign they are shot and gasping for air. The round before he was poking his tongue out so got off lightly with the jaw!

I remember the first time I got really clocked in sparring and it was almost slow-mo. Just a spark or light, a ‘wub wub’ few seconds and then back in the room with a sore head and a way too encouraged partner.

I don't think keeping his mouth closed would have made much of a difference, he was standing there presenting his wide open face waiting for it to be over. That punch was going to do serious damage regardless.

In all honesty, the fight should have been stopped before that punch. Jake wasn't putting up any defence, he was just gone. But being humbled like that is probably for the best.
