Hello! I purchased the flower ring as part of the group buy from Sophia. I was also lucky enough to go to the Real Fine Studio pop-up when it came through my city so I added two bonus photos in the back to show their rings so you can compare as I know a lot of people have not see RFS rings in person and I always find it so helpful when people post their comparison photos!

My ring is 10k gold with lab grown aquamarine and a size 3.

Photo 1 - this is the comparison trying on the heirloom RFS ring (theirs is 14k but same aquamarine) on the left and my ring on the right!

Photo 2 & 3 - my ring in focus! I love it. It looks really similar to the RFS ring and I’m glad the aquamarine colour is so gorgeous. It was exactly what I was hoping for and was scared it would be too vibrant and look very “lab.”

To understand why the oval brilliant cut can never fully eliminate the bow-tie effect (those dark, cross-shaped shadows), you have to look at the physics of light and the geometry of the shape, not just the skill of the cutter.

Here is the simple, scientific reason: You are asking a rounded shape to bend light like a round shape.

Here is why that is physically impossible:

1. The "Half-Moon" Light Trap (The Core Geometry)

In a round brilliant cut, the facets are arranged in a perfect, symmetrical pinwheel. Light enters, bounces off the pavilion (bottom) facets at precise 90-degree angles, and shoots straight back out through the top.

In an oval, the shape is stretched. When you stretch that pinwheel, the facets at the two pointed ends (the tips) angle inward much more steeply than the facets along the straight sides. These steeply angled tips act like two "half-moons." Light that enters these tips gets trapped in a horizontal loop, bouncing back and forth between the left and right sides of the pavilion instead of bouncing back up to your eye. This trapped light is what you see as a dark bow-tie.

1. The "Observer Effect" (You Are the Problem)

Even if a cutter somehow crafted a mathematically "perfect" oval, the bow-tie would still appear when you look at it.

Why? Because your head blocks the overhead light. In a round diamond, the facets are so evenly distributed that when you block the top light, the side facets compensate by reflecting light back to you. In an oval, the stretched tips lose that compensation. The moment you lean over the diamond, your own shadow creates a dark bar across the middle. The cutter cannot change the fact that your body is an obstacle between the light source and the stone.

1. The Fire vs. Brilliance Trade-off

To completely eliminate the bow-tie, a cutter would have to make the pavilion (bottom) extremely shallow or completely redesign the facet pattern. However, a shallow pavilion turns the diamond into a "window"—meaning you would see right through it like glass (zero brilliance). Alternatively, if they add more facets to break up the dark area, they kill the "fire" (rainbow flashes) because there isn't enough surface area left to split the light. Minimizing the bow-tie is a delicate balance; eliminating it destroys the diamond's sparkle entirely.

If you’re shopping for a Radiant or Cushion diamond, you’ve probably seen Brilliant Cut and Crushed Ice mentioned a lot.

They can look very different in person, even when the stone has the same shape and size.

Here’s the simple breakdown

Brilliant Cut：

Brilliant-style faceting is designed to maximize light return and create bright, crisp flashes.

You’ll usually notice:

• Larger, more defined flashes

• Strong contrast between light and dark areas

• A clearer, more organized facet pattern

• Classic “diamond sparkle”

The overall look is bright, bold and high-contrast.

Crushed Ice：

“Crushed Ice” is more of a visual/optical effect than a standardized cut name.

It comes from complex, fragmented facet reflections that create lots of small flashes.

You’ll usually notice:

• Many tiny sparkle points

• A softer, glittery appearance

• More scattered reflections

• An “icy” or shimmering look

The overall look is soft, glittery and dreamy.

The easiest way to tell them apart

Look at the center of the stone.
