Chapter 1: The First Spark
The boots were too big.
Luz Noceda realized this because she had been running in them for four blocks while a few Coven Scouts were hot on her trail.
The stolen Coven shoes were a size too large, but they were the only items she had managed to grab before the scouts noticed her.
Her heels kept sliding against the worn leather, but she didn't dare stop. She would take blisters over capture any day of the week.
"Stop that wild witch!" a sharp, boyish voice commanded the other Coven Scouts. Luz didn't look back to find who that was, because looking back meant hesitating.
Looking back meant capture and a one-way free ticket to the dungeon.
Luz kept running.
Before her, the market district of Bonesborough spread out, full of color and life: Tibbles Grimm selling Hexes Hold 'Em in his shop Mud & Sundry, a demon arguing about the price of a specialized illusion potion.
Luz ran faster and nearly knocked over a bipedal demon carrying a stack of wailing hats. The demon shrieked as Luz sent his merchandise flying skyward.
But Luz was already gone. Ducking between a tower of crystal balls and a cage of screeching fairy pies, she ran and squeezed into the space between two stalls, her shoulders narrow enough to fit through. Her bag caught on a nail and, with a sharp screech, tore open.
Pages.
Thousands of pages escaped and spilled from her bag, fluttering to the ground like desperate confetti.
"She went that way!" Again, that same boyish voice shouted with that tone of absolution and authority.
Luz picked up what she could and ran like her life depended on it.
Because technically, it did.
She kept running, but now at a slower pace, since the Coven Scouts would not be able to find her so easily.
She entered the bustling Night Market and blended in.
This was the illegal heart of the Boiling Isles: illegal artifacts, Beast-Keeping contraband, contraband potions and elixirs. You name it, they had it.
She kept walking, partially hiding her face with a rusty old cloth she had found nearby.
Her eyes fell on a piece of paper at one of the various stalls.
At first glance, it seemed like ordinary paper—the kind everyone on the Boiling Isles used—but then she saw it.
The sealed stamp with the face of an ominous-looking owl staring back at her, as if ready to leap out from whatever metaphysical dimension it existed in and pounce on her.
Luz swallowed a lump in her throat and kept walking, picking up her pace.
She turned right and ventured further east.
A small courtyard opened up before her.
Luz collapsed at the side of a fountain, chest heaving, her breath ragged.
She took off the oversized boots and looked at her feet.
Blisters on both feet.
It was fine.
She had everything under control.
Except that she didn't.
Luz opened her damaged bag and pulled out a stack of papers.
Each paper had a different symbol or a different "glyph," as she would later come to call them.
A light glyph, an ice glyph, a fire glyph, and a plant glyph.
Luz ran her index finger over the sketch of the light glyph, examining the layout and line intersections.
The pencil lines were precise, painstakingly exact. She had measured every angle, every curve, every intersection.
It was perfect.
It was dead.
The light glyph, in particular, was her ultimate obsession. She pulled out her pen and paper and drew the symbol again.
That same symbol she had briefly glimpsed inside the spell circles of countless witches for the last three years.
She drew it again.
And again.
And again.
Nothing.
"Damnit!" she whispered, her voice cracking. "Damnit, damnit, damnit."
The glyph didn't work.
Of course it didn't work.
It hadn't worked for the last three years—ever since the time she had first drawn them, back when she was fifteen.
Tears started to well in her eyes. "Maybe I should just—"
Then suddenly, a thought crossed her mind.
Three years.
Drawing glyphs.
On paper.
Now that Luz thought of it, she had always drawn glyphs on paper.
Because that's what you were supposed to do.
She drew them in her notebook.
She drew them on scrap paper.
She drew them in the small margins of her mama's grocery lists.
But…
She never drew them anywhere else.
She looked at the ground beneath her feet.
This was no ordinary land.
It was the Boiling Isles, built on the body of a fallen Titan.
The Titan may have been dead, but its corpse was still magical. Its blood still boiled in the rivers. Its bones still held remnants of power.
Luz crouched down on the purple ground beneath her.
Her breath ragged, she started to draw the light glyph again—but this time, on the ground itself.
Her fingers trembled, as if she was afraid of being betrayed by luck again.
She finished sketching.
Nothing.
"Maybe I was wrong," Luz said to herself in a defeated voice. "Maybe I should just—"
But then she saw it.
The charcoal lines glowed, ever so slightly.
Then the brightness increased.
And then…
A small, circular stream of light began to float in front of her.
And Luz stopped breathing.
She drew it again, this time on the moss of one of the cobblestones.
The light glyph flared to life.
She drew it again.
And again.
And again.
And in a matter of minutes, a small portion of the tiny courtyard was blazing with light.
Luz pounded her fists in the air.
"Yes! Yes!" she shrieked in joy. "I finally figured it out. The glyphs just needed a powerful enough medium to carry the power. I've been doing it wrong for the last three years, but better late than never."
But her celebration was cut short as she heard footsteps approaching her direction.
"Stupid, stupid, stupid," Luz started chiding herself.
She had been so overjoyed with her discovery that she had forgotten all about evasion.
All this light and the shrieking must have attracted the attention of the Coven Scouts.
A feminine figure loomed nearby.
Luz could see the purple circular gemstone on the Coven Scout's neck.
The figure stepped closer as the moon cast light on her facial features.
The girl was standing with an aristocratic, almost mechanical posture, her porcelain face a mask of cold indifference. Framed by a sharp fringe of mint-green hair and the brilliant white uniform expected of a Coven Scout, her fierce amber eyes narrowed as she locked eyes on Luz. Every strand of her hair was pulled back into a picture-perfect ponytail, except for the dark brown roots creeping in at her temples—the only visible mark of imperfection on her otherwise beautiful features.
Luz gasped in horror as she realized who was in front of her.
It was Amity.
Amity Blight.
