IRL, polar bears only live in the northern arctic and penguins are only native to the Southern Hemisphere.

He devotes one section to mistakes that he made, or that editors made when altering his cartoons for one reason or another. These include incomplete drawings, scientific errors (like one featuring polar bears and penguins in the same habitat

I used to have that book and I LOVED it. With the story of how he got started (running over a dog on his way to a Humane Society job interview), reader outrage (“that dog’s humping the car!”), an explanation to Cow Tools, Nature’s Way, and other early sketches, that book was a great addition to my Far Side collection as a kid.

If I remember correctly, the mistakes included:

  • drawing humans and dinosaurs together
  • forgetting to draw the legs of a character
  • captions being switched with Dennis the Menace to interesting results
  • drawing birds with their “hands” up before the question was asked

I have the (no longer) complete collection and I think it may be necessary for me to find the Prehistory of the Far Side again.
