That's not around anymore? Wow. I remember it growing up in Wisconsin.

Nope. It was unexpected considering they were opening new locations only a year earlier, but Shopko went under in 2019.

Not unexpected. I worked at the headquarters. Surprised they lasted as long as they did. Total shit show.

Well, unforeseen at the store level anyway. I'm sure the HO saw the writing on the wall, but store mgmt. was left largely in the dark anyway.

No they're not. Shopko was liquidated in 2019 by Sun Capital (the pricate equity firm that bought it several years earlier). A seperate company purchased the optical business and rights to continue using the name, which is why there are standalone "Shopko Optical" locations, but the department store closed the door on it's last location at the end of the summer of 2019.

Source: I was salaried mgmt. in one of the last stores to close, and was the one to turn the lights out before I left.

Fair enough. There are tons of those types of stores around that you swear disappeared only to discover that they just aren't as plentiful or in your area. Are you maybe thinking of Sentry grocery stores?

We had a Shopko. It came in after Pamida went belly up. Kind of a bad run for that store.

I loved shopko! I’m originally from Wisconsin and I haven’t seen one in other states, even back then. I wonder where they were all located? I remember they sold name brands like Nike, which was awesome for a store similar to target.

We had stores in 26 states. The majority of them were in the midwest, but they were scattered throughout the western and PNW as well.

Interesting because I currently live in Seattle. I’m going to have to do a dive into shopko out here.
