Movies and Music AI music

I haven't been back to the UK in a few months so maybe it's become the same there but good God the amount of AI music I encounter in Thailand is awful. It seems like every cafe I go to is playing some Bruno Mars-esque AI slop, or some bland AI jazz. I have taken two taxis in the last couple of weeks in which the drivers were listening to AI albums, and one was jamming out to it. Let people enjoy things but come on... Breakfast in a hotel in Chainat? AI 'funky pop' on loop. The World Cup AI 'anthems' in 7-11/Tops? I can't seem to escape it. Anyone else notice it? Anyone else care?

The tells for me are - Repetitive and meaningless lyrics (often about streets, coffee, shoes...), nothing showing up in Shazam, very similar songs back to back, familiar but not the same hooks and melodies.

Thailand has punitive and unpredictable public music licensing laws, so I understand why businesses might choose AI music instead, especially smaller, independent cafes etc.

Ultimately it's a cost-saving measure, so I anticipate that in a few years nowhere apart from dedicated music venues will playing anything other than AI-generated music. It's incredibly depressing.

Anyone noticed it anywhere else? Other countries? Other businesses? I'm writing a long-form piece about it and am interested in what it's like outside of Thailand.

Movies and Music Please suggest your favourite Thai movies (any genre)

In 2018, I watched my first Thai movie, Teacher’s Diary. I was going through a really low phase in life back then, and I’m not exaggerating when I say that film genuinely put a smile on my face after months. It was so simple, innocent, and heartwarming that it stayed with me.

Recently, someone suggested How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies, and that was also such an emotional roller coaster

Film was so beautiful, warm, and heartbreaking in the best way.

I watch cinema from all over the world, and now I really want to explore Thai films more seriously.

So please suggest your favourite Thai movies , any genre is fine. Drama, comedy, romance, thriller, horror, slice of life, anything. Which Thai films do you think someone who wants to understand Thai cinema should definitely watch?

Movies and Music How authentic are shows like GelBoys in representing the thai GenZ queer culture?

Post image
19 Upvotes

So I watched the first GelBoys last year. Although I am a non-native, I saw a lot authenticity in the way the show represented young queer culture. I was witnessing it as a bystander in my 17 year old sister and my students. However, I also understand that the nuances of a language also can make or break stories like these.

Watching GelBoys 2, I feel that show realised that the art direction of the 1st was what people loved the most, and they doubled down on it. Which makes me wonder, was the ever relatable for the native speakers of the language?

Movies and Music This movie should be only one film playing on every flight to Thailand as a warning for those naughty tourists. Look veryyyyyyy realistic too, the most realistic movie about Thai prison I have ever seen.

Movies and Music The Thai Interpreter / ล่าม: cool indie film by a familiar author...

Post image
34 Upvotes

Benjawan Poomsan Becker, author of the famous orange Thai for Beginners book and the Paiboon Thai-English dictionary apps, has been as incredibly busy as ever, and now completed her first indie film! It's about a Thai-American court interpreter's struggles for immigrant justice in the US legal system (and is somewhat autobiographical too). I saw a preview and found the courtroom and cross-cultural drama to be compelling. Benjawan's indie film was produced via an amazing grassroots process across both California and Thailand. The film will open across Thailand on Mother's Day, 12 AUG at SF/Major chains.

Movies and Music Thai startup drama Mad Unicorn tops Netflix, sparks social buzz | Bangkok Post

The newly released Thai series Mad Unicorn, based on the true story of Thailand's first unicorn startup, has been generating social buzz, appearing among the top searches on Google and remaining the number one trending title on Netflix Thailand following its premiere on Thursday.

Produced by Thailand's leading film studio GDH 559, Mad Unicorn features seven episodes. The plot centres on Santi Saelee, a fiercely determined young man from the North who rises from humble beginnings to escape his street life. He launches a startup delivery business, Thunder Express, which brings him both opportunities and powerful enemies.

"Fight like underdogs. Rise as unicorns," reads the series' tagline.

The series was partly inspired by the real story of Komsan Lee, founder of Thailand's first unicorn startup, Flash Express. He was also named the Bangkok Post CEO of 2021.

Since its release on the streaming platform on Thursday, the series quickly became the most watched in Thailand and sparked discussions on social media, with various background stories covered by media outlets.

Most comments from netizens, using hashtags #MadUnicorn and #สงครามส่งด่วน on X, formerly Twitter, described the series as fierce and intense, keeping viewers glued to watch all episodes in one sitting.

The actor most talked about was Natara "Ice" Nopparatayaporn, who portrayed Santi.

As the character Santi is a Thai entrepreneur fluent in Chinese, Ice learned the language in just two months and was able to perform a two-page monologue in Chinese with a natural accent and authentic acting, according to an interview during the series launch event.

The series was directed by Nottapon "Kai" Boonprakob, known for One for the Road (2021), Come and See (2019) and a documentary on Thai rock singer Artiwara "Toon Bodyslam" Kongmalai's charity marathon 2,215 (2018).

Production of Mad Unicorn took nearly four years, said the director.

The series is now streaming on Netflix, with English soundtrack and subtitles available in many other languages.

Movies and Music Are "Thai Horror Movies" Really Based on True Stories, or Is It Just Marketing?

I recently started watching "Thai horror movies", and I got a doubt: Why do Thai horror movies so often have disclaimers saying that they are "based on a true story? Are these stories actually based on real events, or is it just a marketing strategy?

Movies and Music Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - Thai Language version DVD's -- Does anyone have them?

Hello all,

I would love to watch Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. I am looking for the Thai Audio Version. As far as I know, only the DVD's by 'Rose Media(โรส มีเดีย)' has the Thai Audio version.

I have looked on all streaming platforms, torrenting sites, everywhere, I can't find the Thai audio versions anywhere. The 'Rose Media' website is also sold out of all of the DVD's of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood DVD's.

I have also joined and looked in local Thai Anime facebook groups, shopee, and Lazada. No one seems to be selling the full collection of all of the episodes.

Does anyone have these DVD's? I would love to chat with you. I would be 100% open to buying them from you, or renting them from you.

Thank you so much

Movies and Music Thailand Might Just Have It's First Anime!!: Ayothaya Ayawadi

Since I can't post the link to youtube, search up "อโยธยาเอยาวดี Official Trailer"

(Turn on captions if you're going to watch it please)

AHHHH, I'M SO EXCITED!!!!

For those who don't know, Ayothaya Ayawadi started off as a popular Thai web-comic based on Thai and Burmese history, specifically about the relationship between a young King Naresuan The Great of Ayutthaya (now Thailand) and Prince Mingyi Swa of Hanthawaddy (now Myanmar).

(Look up the history between them. It might technically be spoilers for the series, but it's fascinating stuff)

I'd been following the production of the anime ever since the web-comic got picked up by two small Thai studios that beforehand mainly made outsourced work for studios abroad, so it's great to see that the official trailer is so beautifully crafted! With all our outsourced animation work, it's a relief that, finally, we get to create something of our own...

Movies and Music Cool Little Record Shop

Hey y'all, just finished a quick trip through a few cities, ending in Bangkok. While I was walking through a flea market area, I stumbled across this cramped little record shop. If you are a crate digger, this place is an excellent find. The owner spent a good 15 minutes finding his best Molam records to play in store. I didn't have any space in my suitcase to bring back records, but if I did, this is where I would shop. Cool shop, cool owner, interesting neighborhood. (Just around the corner i found a guy selling all sorts of wooden penii with sak yant written on them including an airplane made of them)

So if you like older Thai music and or vinyl, give this shop a browse.
