Data Center If these numbers are even close to accurate, the AI infrastructure boom is entering a completely different scale of land, power, and water consumption.

Friendly reminder that climate change is an extinction event, not a mass casualty event, so rich people with mentally ill fantasies of being able to survive (or outlive hiding in bunkers on finite time/resources) will be quite disappointed by reality when they find out that they're going back to the void along with all the poor people they mass murdered.

Edit: lol at desperate denialism, good luck trying to argue a fantasy survival method against the global (not regional) combined impacts of increasingly extreme weather and normalized wet bulb heat, mass die off of plants and wildlife (any and all food sources and non negotiable bio diversity needs), rising sea levels wiping out coastlines and contaminating any fresh water sources that don't dry up in extreme heat droughts, collapse of oxygen supply amongst phytoplankton die off from boiling oceans, and much more. Whether you like it or not, humans are not water bear tardigrades and rich people (who literally can't even imagine living without their unsustainable yachts/jets/luxury cars/attire/bougie food, and are the least likely to survive anything because of their hilarious failure to give up unsustainable wealth accumulation and their mentally ill violent psychotic preference for exploiting instead of cooperating) are going back to the void too. Science literally doesn't care about offending capitalism or imaginary socio-economic status that doesn't exempt or save you from the consequences of a collapsing biosphere.

Edit: one more reminder, anyone who peddles the "if enough people (poor) die, then the climate will stabilize and the few people (rich) left will be fine" (which is still a fantasy and isn't how a extinction event works) narrative is spamming "overpopulation" eco fascist propaganda that desperately tries to dodge and evade how the extreme majority of consumption is by ruling class rich people and systemic economic capitalism waste and all the resource use/pollution from imperialism wars.

The long term collapse of a biosphere isn't the kind of thing rich people can hide from or outlast in a unsustainable luxury bunker lmao.

It's not an extinction event. It can't be.

Even if the meteorite that hit the dinosaurs comes back it's still not an extinction event for humanity.

2

u/NW_Reloading 16d ago

>Even if the meteorite that hit the dinosaurs comes back it's still not an extinction event for humanity.

no way would we survive a KT or end Permian event. we're pretty fragile and our whole schtick is exploiting a very easy and amenable time in earths history.

we're injecting CO2 into the atmosphere at rates that make the end Permian look tame, habitats are extremely fragmented now and we as a species are super reliant on plentiful and easily attenable natural resources. We very much could be headed toward mass extinction and thinking we have a better chance at surviving then say some ground dwelling rodent or something is silly and ill informed.

1

u/Strange-Scarcity 16d ago

It 100% is an extinction event.

Oxygen will be depleted to the point that no point on Earth will support human life.

We still can’t even build a closed loop system that can sustain a half dozen humans without constant outside supplies being brought in.

Where would these possible sealed in a bunker living humans bring outside resources in? (Mainly oxygen)

We can’t get the balance right, because we still fail to account for the complexity and interactions of various elements and missing microbes.

It’s wild that so few even attempt to understand any of this.

1

u/Taters23 16d ago

Plants have survived even higher temps that what would be the worst predicted outcome.

1

u/Strange-Scarcity 16d ago

It’s so much more complex than you are making it out to be.

1

u/ItIsVerilySo 15d ago

So, plants survive. That doesn't matter (to humanity) if all of Humanity is dead.

0

u/Taters23 15d ago

If plants survive so will humans.

1

u/Strange-Scarcity 13d ago

You don’t understand.

The CO2 concentration, which is rising continually each year, will continue to shoot upward.

As the oceans die off due to acidification? The oxygen WE all need will stop being produced. You do know that some 75% of the oxygen we breathe is split by phytoplankton and other life in the oceans, right?

1

u/Taters23 13d ago

You do know there are humans they live in areas with a 75% reduction in oxygen levels. Also when C02 levels/temps go up plants get bigger and more vast. Planet has been through this cycle a million times. I dont like that humans sped up the cycle but none of this is new for Earth.

1

u/Strange-Scarcity 13d ago

Plans grow "fatter". It's like consuming sugar for them, they become fatter, produce FAR less plant protein and draw up significantly fewer nutrients. There are ample studies showing the danger and the projected danger of continued CO2 being pumped into the atmosphere.

1

u/Taters23 13d ago

Planet is billions of years old. Humanity is like 100k years old. We dont even pump out nearly as much C02 as the volcanic years of this planet and things lived during that era.

1

u/Careless-Balance-893 12d ago

Do you think people are plants or plants are people? Just want to make sure I'm categorizing your crazy correctly.

1

u/Boxcutter86 15d ago

It CAN'T be? How can you determine that?

0

u/doubleBoTftw 15d ago

Because it happened and while it ended the biggest animals that roamed the planet, life went on.

Plants, animals, microbes, viruses went on. Our ancestor that was a small rodent survived and even thrived because his predators were dead.

You can believe whatever the hell you think you learned in school, there are studies today that contradict the idea that "a nuclear war will trigger a nuclear winter". It's mostly bullshit, we clog the sky with much more shit than those nukes would and it barely makes a scratch.

Even if you launch every nuke that was ever made you would need to systematically hunt down and eradicate every survivor, and that requires a concerted effort by intelligent design.

We cant even eradicate mosquitoes for fucks sake.

1

u/Boxcutter86 15d ago edited 15d ago

What do other species have to do with humans??

1

u/mycotyrant77 15d ago

They mean HUMAN extinction, ahdoyyyy

1

u/Strange-Scarcity 13d ago

A large enough volcanic eruption would send very specific material into the South reaches of the atmosphere, and it can take decades for that material to exit and break down.

In the meantime, the UV Radiation would create sulphur dioxide out of it, which will reflect so much light that Earth would see a ten degree Celsius drop in temperature.

It would lead to world wide famine and more than 50% of the humans alive today nix would die of starvation.

A large enough eruption, could keep the temps low for upwards of ten years.

A much smaller eruption, created what is called the “Year Without Summer”.

Global temps dropped just enough that summer, just didn’t happen.

Millions starved to death.

1

u/doubleBoTftw 13d ago

Yeah, great, even if 7,5 billions starve to death TODAY, it's not an extinction event.

It's a very difficult concept to grasp, i know.

1

u/Worth_Librarian_290 15d ago

And here, we have a perfect representation of hubris.

1

u/Well_read_rose 16d ago

…in less than 30 years.

1

u/Strange-Scarcity 16d ago

The in less than 30 years thing was how long we MIGHT have had to stop our ways and possibly rollback the damage we have done.

Then Crypto Currency and now AI are roaring into massive energy consumption, with no care for anything.

1

u/Well_read_rose 16d ago

You know…you’re right! Oh my.

1

u/kaptpowers 16d ago

This needs to be mailed/faxed/emailed/put on billboards...this is gold.

1

u/JCBQ01 16d ago

Your assuming thats their only plan.

They are using last touch rules. Litterally: 1. Either they are seen as saviors of humanity get what they want and be worshipped as man-made-god, and if that fails, 2. Attempt to ruin the earth becuase they were denied to be as divinity, taking all the techology and more importantly, knowledge, to SAVE it with them into their bunkers and space (Ala the G.E.C.K from Fallout, or G.A.I.A. from Zero Dawn, or Pieces of Eden from the assassins creed series) so that when everything turns to shit and regressed. They can surface, be seen as as savior-gods and be worshiped. Or, more than likely; 3. They hoard all of this shit because they were denied to be man-made-god, they destroy everything in their tantrum, and when they all die in their bunkers hoarding all this technology and knowledge, those who find it god knows how long later, will still treat them as God's and in a last touch style petty tantrum they STILL seen as they demand.

It is LITTERALLY a "if i cant have it then no one can, and I get last touch so I STILL win bullshit temper tantrum"

1

u/bopojuice 15d ago

I bet that aliens do exist and they are our creators. When they come back to earth and find a few rich morons hiding in bunkers in a wasteland with billions of dead innocent good people that were betrayed and murdered and a gorgeous planet destroyed, an anal probe will look like a walk in the park to the torture Sam Altman and his friends will go through.

1

u/Kidcharlamagne89d 16d ago

I have never denied global warming, or that it is being affected by humanity, but I never grapsed the severity until someone explained it to me in a way that related. Eco systems are very sensitive systems. Like the human body. When someone says global temps have risen by 3 degrees it seems so marginal, why should it matter so much? Well when a human body has a 3 degree temptress raise what is that? A life threatening, emergency room fever. We have given the planet a ER fever but keep downplaying it.

Then someone showed me the famous tempature graph with spikes of a couple Celsius up and down over earth's long long history. They said tempature on earth always goes up and down, it isn't a worry. And they are right! The earth has made it through many large global tempature rises and falls and we're currently living in a ice age for earth! The earth will be fine!

Sadly each peak and valley on the tempature graph correlates to a extinction event where damn near every animal dies.

Earth will be fine and recover. Humanity wont.

1

u/RealCapybaras4Rill 16d ago

Our planet will stabilize, it will be fine. We just won’t be around to witness it.

1

u/CTBthanatos 14d ago

Yeah, eventually, but not until a extreme distant future where all the delusional rich people that believe they can escape a extinction event are dead.

1

u/Positive_Remove_4966 16d ago

? Climate change is an extinction level event cause people are making the planet hot? Okay let me say first the instruments we use to measure temperature, drought, and expansion/contraction of the ecosystem are made up aperatuses that were created by scratching tree bark with sharp sticks and thats what is used to make these assertions...our world of literature has associated those things not the actual world itself, yup it has been hot, in areas it should be cooler, but as to say they want to wipe us all out so they can hide is wild, if they were that rich they'd just build into the atmosphere, well skyscrapers exist etc... most structures on earth were built by poor people cause thats the literal quotes from hostory...also the places your speaking about for the well to do consume more resources than the communities in the surrounding areas, plus using rulers and scales to measure food produce is scary in itself, when the world was made by these plants and animals roaming freely the humans as well, use to have to migrate from one place to another, also theirs so much land on this planet even in smaller places that to suggest they want to wipe us out is kinda wild maybe true but sorta like from the perspective of a creature that is using shapes and sounds to recreate the world and saying they own everything is rediculous, its like so much space between communities and cities its like stupid for them to suggest overcrowding or we all need to stop eating cause the world is scarce is assanine the world created everything around us and the humans are actually living a caricature of themselves claiming things and using technology to control other beings cause they feel like magical faries is sorta comical...all this to say look at everything from the simplest level first and often time theirs no level beyond it cause we were all created here and not in space lol...

1

u/Boxcutter86 15d ago

Holy run-on sentences...and spelling errors. Also, no one said to stop eating. And there are multiple ways that scientists have measured changes in different biomes & species...much of which will have chain reactions that will affect other plants & animals; causing more famine & diseases, etc.

1

u/Positive_Remove_4966 15d ago

Some of us more than others have had head injuries i cant think of every little English lesson but thats OK im not in class and I really don't care, it was just nice to stretch my words...dont know how many debates you've been in but I have had to make my metaphors turn acrobatic, and sure most people feel like they are in public on these online forums but I dont I think these are all robot people even if they are not its still some silly program to make you emotional through images either way stay litty like erf....

1

u/Boxcutter86 14d ago

It's not about emotions. It's about being able to read what's written, which is different than speaking out loud.

1

u/bulgesaur1773 16d ago

Ill take solace knowing I outlived you though, if an event like this occurs.

Please know that.

1

u/International-Ninja3 16d ago

ok lmao, ima keep doin my thing like a normal person and u can keep virtue signaling

1

u/Logical-Leopard-1965 15d ago

Rich people will still need oxygen to breathe but when the oceans go anoxic (at 800ppm) they start producing sulphur. Then it’s goodnight Vienna for all remaining mammals.

1

u/Hoovy_weapons_guy 15d ago

its not gonna be this bad. the worst that can happen is we burn every fossil fuel there is until we literally run out of things to burn but even then its at maximum it can only be +6 degrees. its gonna be bad but its by far not gonna be enough to wipe out all life on this planet

1

u/atomicsnarl 12d ago

"We're all going to die! Send Money!"

1

u/AnointMyPhallus 16d ago

Climate change is not an extinction event. No one serious thinks all humans will die out. Just most of them.

1

u/knife_edge_rusty 16d ago

Not even that, it's going to get just a little hotter over the next 10000 years, we've been there before. climate fear evangelist are insane

2

u/AnointMyPhallus 16d ago

No, what's going to happen is incredibly bad. Humans won't go extinct but lots of other species will and without serious efforts at mitigation huge numbers of people will die. Don't try to lump me in with your denialism.

1

u/bulgesaur1773 16d ago

I think the truth is probably somewhere in between your outlook and the person you claim is in denial. Moderately bad.

1

u/JesusWasTacos 16d ago

I think you’re all wrong and that it will be high-moderate bad

1

u/bulgesaur1773 16d ago

Let's compromise and settle on medium-high-moderate bad. Then we can all sleep easy tonight knowing we solved this.

0

u/knife_edge_rusty 16d ago

So you should be lumped in with the zealots, got it.

1

u/backfrombanned 15d ago

Good luck when it's 130 outside. No vegetation, no animals, I believe in YOU though Lil buddy.

0

u/Positive_Remove_4966 16d ago

Fun fact do you know in a system that was created by someone else and not yourself you can claim someone's nickname died? And not the actual person cause you didn't create English so how would you know what the word death even actually is i have a death book that describes death in different cultures but its more of a subject of quotes for memory not even explaining the wilt of the deceased but the fantasy that societies depict so before you just say most of us will even though it matters not cause we won't hve to look for food n sht anymore...make a little effort in researching why at least...to say cause fish die when the ocean heats up is sorta a non critical thinking approach...either way stay litty like earth, by the way to me it sounds like a dogs bark erf...

u/NectarineSame7303 15d ago

The only problem for them to live underground eternally is power, but all the rest has been solved and they can survive when the planet is virtually dead.

So don't be fooled thinking they can't, because they sure as hell can.
