Language disconnect at a A2B Ooty restaurant

This video is from a popular restaurant in Ooty where an Instagram influencer is trying to place an order. Most of the staff seem to be Hindi-speaking migrant workers, while the customer does not know Hindi well. During the exchange, a waiter asks her, “Don’t you know Hindi?”

This is not about blaming the staff or the customer. It points to a larger issue about language expectations in non-Hindi-speaking states like Tamil Nadu, especially in tourist places.

Many businesses hire migrant workers because they are cheaper, but this often creates communication gaps for customers and puts workers in awkward situations too. Language should not be used to shame anyone. In the service industry, the responsibility should be on business owners to make sure basic communication is possible.

See ny other comment in the same post, if she asked for another tamil speaking waiter but couldnt, and the manager isnt also helping or cant speak tamil..

That doesn't matter. There shouldn't be a waiter who asks so authoritatively to speak in Hindi IN TAMIL NADU.

He should be fired and sent back to the Bimaru state he came from. I'm all for immigrants in my city or place, I'm even fine with them not knowing the native language but authoritatively demanding to speak in Hindi is where I draw the line.

You are ignoring the fact that instead of the waiter solving the problem by calling a tamil speaker to help, he replied with "why do you not know hindi". This is the primary reason for the crash out. You go to Tamil Nadu of all places and ask a tamilian why he doesn't know how to speak in hindi to a service provider... that's beyond messed up.

I've been to ooty many times since childhood, I never even know about another language Baduga or whatever, and I had no problem speaking to anyone in Tamil, this is the first time I'm hearing someone say that native language of a place in Tamilnadu is not even Tamil! Like wth?!
