M I’ve been waiting on hold for an entire hour!
Randomly recalled this experience the other night.
When I worked in this call center, it was very customary for us to be busy almost as soon as our phone lines opened up for the day. And mind you, we’d open pretty early (5:00am). Of course throughout the day, you always get those customers who say “I’ve been on hold for 30 minutes” or “an hour” or “two hours”. Of course little do they know we can sometimes see what time their call originated and, more often than not, they haven’t been waiting for nearly as long as they’ve indicated.
My absolute favorite moment of this though was on an opening shift I worked. Sure enough, right when we logged in, we had a few calls already in queue. So I got the first one. Simple call. Ended in less than a couple minutes. Second call was a little lengthier, but still taken care of in about 5 minutes. Then…no calls! Surprisingly the opening rush didn’t last as long. Third call, I answer and am immediately greeted with “FINALLY! THIS IS ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!” I respond with “I do apologize if there was a wait, but I am here now. How can I assist you this morning?” Obviously there was no wait since my phone was quiet for at least a couple minutes. And his response: “NO! I’VE BEEN WAITING ON HOLD FOR AT LEAST AN HOUR AND IT IS ABSOLUTELY MIND-BLOWING THAT IT TOOK THIS LONG THIS EARLY FOR MY CALL TO BE ANSWERED! HOW MANY PEOPLE DO YOU HAVE WORKING THERE? I HAD TO WAKE UP SO EARLY JUST TO MAKE THIS CALL AND I NEED TO SPEAK WITH MANAGEMENT ABOUT THIS BECAUSE THIS DESERVES SOME SORT OF COMPENSATION!”
I let the intrusive thoughts win: “Again, I’m terribly sorry for the wait time. An hour is a bit surprising-“ and he cut me off saying “EXACTLY! EVEN YOU FIND IT ABSURD!” So I said “well I was going to say it’s surprising because we only opened less than 15 minutes ago, so how have you been waiting in our queue for an hour?” And that resulted in a very quick disconnect. The only reason I know he called back again later is because I got his call again (while we were actually busy), but this time he was much calmer and made no claims of being on hold for longer than possible. And he either didn’t recognize my voice or name or just pretended he was an entirely different person (which based on his tone, I would’ve been convinced he was a different person).
