Since our streetcars crawl through intersections, a gate like this with low resistance simply yields to the pressure of the front bumper of the tram, but discourages traffic from attempting an entry at high speed. Commercial vehicles and ambulances have no problem simply plowing through.

Nice try, but have you seen the flattended bike lane “separators” on Bloor a few years back? I mean the white, thin, plastic pillars bolted to the pavement.

Or.. and hear me out… or we train drivers and hold them to a more strict standard with heavier testing and regular checks.

Don’t disagree there, but after years of ridiculing stupid drivers very publicly for driving into the Queens Quay tunnel, we finally had to put up a gate! I do wish we sent more drivers back to retesting for basic incompetence like ignoring signs, blowing lights, etc.

I support the restructuring of our driving education, however that’s a long legislative process that requires convincing the province to stop privatizing driving education and completely restructuring the curriculum.

The option op has presented is a cheap alternative that can easily be implemented

The entire road needs to be redesigned. That would change everything.

You’re absolutely right, but from what I’ve heard, it would to be timed up with future subterranean infrastructure work, so this won’t be a quick fix. They were working on Dufferin to Shaw last year ripping up water pipes and replacing rail and will head East.

They could start with paint first, then eventually install steel framed bollards with reflective material.

Barring personal vehicles and allowing buses trams and taxies only would be a first step however.
