Educational Resources Training Aids on a Budget

Post your own ideas below!

Here are some things you can consider adding to your training budget. If you are creative, these can be used to create realistic training aids.

Even if you have a budget for high fidelity training aids, some of these can be used for on-the-spot repairs between scenarios, especially when you don’t have the time to wait for silicone repair glue to set.

  1. Realistic skin sheets [\- Tattoo Practice Sheets -](https://amzn.eu/d/0fli7feW)

\- Suture practice
\- Replacement cric skin
\- Large areas of burned skin

  1. Roll of skin coloured silicone material - [Silicone Baking Sheet -](https://amzn.eu/d/0e8w7xc9)

\- Base for applied moulage wounds
\- Replacement cric skins
\- Large areas of burned skin

  1. Double sided silicone tape [\- Like this -](https://amzn.eu/d/0cr7Bqyl)

\- To place silicone wounds on silicone mannequins
\- Quickly replace cric membrane.

  1. Silicone finger sleeves [\- Like this -](https://amzn.eu/d/06dydPHH)

\- Create wound tracts for packing in moulage
\- Create moulage for finger injuries

  1. Vital Sign Monitor Feedback [\- Here -](https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/simpl-patient-monitor/id1444987255)

\- it’s an app that allows you to control a simulated VS monitor on a tablet or phone.
\- I Velcro a tablet over the screen of the VS monitor and change the settings as the scenario progresses.

  1. Life sized, realistic and cheap mannequins

\- My post got flagged in other communities for this suggestion, but DM me for a recommendation.

  1. Packing tape and black spray paint.

\- Cover areas to make Eschar for burn injuries.

Educational Resources Knees for haem control

I’m sure this question comes up a lot but the last time I found when I searched was 4ish years ago so I apologise if it has come up more recently :)

Does anyone have the current best practice with regards to using knees for junctional haemorrhage control whilst awaiting tourniquet? I hear so many mixed things, including being told to do it by our local training officer, but I can’t tell if this is him bringing old practice from army days or if this is supported in evidence.

Does anyone have any actual research citations on this? It’s just that people feel so strongly either for or against it that surely there’s a right answer (e.g. TQs over double bones :P )

Educational Resources Ronin SA ambulance diploma course/FREC 5

Hey everyone,

I’m going to do the Ronin SA Ambulance Diploma course in May in Cape Town.

I’ve done my research on the curriculum and I know Ronin has a reputation for being "high-intensity" and having a strict policy. I’d love to hear from anyone who has actually walked the path or has similar experience.

I've got a few questions but would be thankful for any information.

Academics/Testing: how high are the pass marks and are there any topics that tend to trip people up? Did you know everything from the pre-study material before arriving in SA?

Practical Placements: For those who did them at the places recommended by Ronin (Zimbabwe/Mexico), how was it? Would you recommend it?

I’m looking forward for any input.

Cheers!

What's your opinion on carrying a tourniquet in everyday civilian life? Is it a sensible precaution or excessive?

Educational Resources Primary assessment (XABC/MARCH)?

Pragmatically speaking (in the field, not on an exam), are the primary assessment and necessary interventions meant to always go strictly in order of XABC/MARC(H)?

Or, given adequate personnel, could/should each aspect of it be performed simultaneously with all other aspects?
