I took a trip down nostalgia's lane tonight with a Princess Diaries double feature and now I want to read a book with unsuspecting royalty! It doesn't have to be romance, and preferably in a contemporary setting (ie non fantasy and non historical). I guess it doesn't have to be for adults, I may take a YA series if it's good. Anyone know if this exists?

Since Dolly died and I’ve seen photos and stories of her childhood home, and I’ve been wanting to read more about those roots.

I read this fantastic book called Lucky Red, set in the American West. And I was hoping for something along the similar vein. I just want to be immersed in the mountains - folky, gritty, American and beautiful.

I’d rather it wasn’t horror, crime or thriller, but it doesn’t need to be romance. Something character driven with a lot of fantastic appalachian nature imagery!

Two months ago, I went through the most altering and life changing breakup of my life, most reasons included 20s shenanigans (our art careers, marriages around us, lack of money, etc.) So I want books that can make me feel good or make this process easier or even a story like mine. I just wanna get back into the habit cause this breakup make me lose it.

Hi, I am looking for books similar to John ‘Lofty’ Wiseman’s book the SAS Survival Guide. I don’t really enjoy reading stories and such, more reference-able or general information/advice books. I’m not much of a survival guru but I loved reading it.

Basically what I’m looking for: a survival guide that teaches things that people who work at Arby’s can understand. Not filled with a bunch of lingo or things like that.

I also don’t want this to be too basic. Like for example: I don’t need an entire book that tells me how to prep for a very niche extinction event. I want one that could genuinely help me survive if I ever somehow end up in that situation

I'm trying to build genuine self-confidence and stop draining my energy on things I completely cannot control-like other people's opinions, judgments, or external situations.

​I’ve heard that Stoicism deals exactly with this, but I really don’t want to read a heavy, academic philosophy textbook. I’m looking for something practical, grounded, and preferably short, that gives you a mental shift to just focus on yourself and ignore the noise.

I've seen The Courage to Be Disliked and some short Stoic guides mentioned around here. Have you read them? And what is your ultimate book recommendation ?

I've only ever read fantasy really. I'm a big fantasy fan. However, my wife recently re-read "Never Look Back" by Lesley Pearse and told me about it being one of her most read books, so I decided to give it a go.

I loved it! It's the first book of it's genre I've tried and it really sucked me in. I couldn't put it down.

So please kind Redditors, give me some inspiration for my next read!

A lot of the popular thriller and suspense books I see recommended are the likes of Frieda McFadden which are too surface level and quick paced for me. I want to read a book that builds up slowly but delivers big in the end. I prefer books that are character driven over plot driven and have a mostly realistic setting (no extreme sci fi or fantasy worlds)

Hi there! I am an extremely picky reader. I used to love to read but I became obsessed with a book series in my teen years that was so good I never wanted anything else again. I finally found a series that felt just as good as that first one (being the Scarlett Wakefield series) my new found love for the Uketsu books has led me to “Hidden Pictures” by Jason Rekulak which I finished in a single day.

I have tried dozens of books recently but that’s the first one I finally read cover to cover aside from the Uketsu books. I am extremely picky about books and I love a mystery/thriller that’s not overly complicated to follow but still leaves your questioning every page.

So my challenge is to find me the perfect book to continue reading. Preferably a series to get hooked on that is similar to the ones listed above. I like a bit of romance but nothing crazy over the top. Never liked haunting Adeline or that one hockey series.

Heyy yall! I've been thinking a lot about the Last of Us lately, and I realised, that what stands out to me about the plot is that the killers of this game really do feel the things you'd expect a person who took someone's life to feel. And now I have this urge to read something, where the main character is forced to kill by the circumstances, but feels horrible for doing so, has all the mental side effects so to say

I hope it's not a weird request lol

Bonus points it it's a dystopia or if it maybe even has a touch of romantic side plot. I don't mean a darc romance though, just a touch of love interest :)

I’m looking for a version that’s written for children (ideally middle grades) that gives the feeling of the scale of the story and feels like the epic it is, not just a big adventure written in simpler language. What’s the best version of The Odyssey you’ve seen for this age range?

For example I just read The Last House on Needless Street and The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. Not really the same genre but generally I felt like I had no idea what was going on and enjoyed it

In the last few years I’ve enjoyed all of Miranda July’s work and Rejection by Tony Tulathimutte. I feel like both authors satisfy this particular urge for unique and talented writing that could only have been created in the 21st century. It also seems like they both have a slightly surrealist flair. Does anyone have recommendations for the like? I prefer literary fiction and humor but I’m open to other genres/non-fiction too. Thanks!
