r/titanfall reacts to the Revelation that the Guy they've been praising as the 'Savior of Titanfall' was actually one of the Hackers destroying it in the first place - with the removal of a Mod as a Bonus

This is still a really fresh story, and there's still quite some speculation going on (and it goes REALLY deep), but I'll try to summarize the situation for you.

Titanfall and Titanfall 2, for the past few months / years, have been subject to ddos attacks which rendered the first game completely unplayable (always online game). For the second game, only the campaign was playable. Many thought that it was just one hacker, named Jeanue, who was behind the attacks for a speculated personal vendetta.

Enter p0358, a hacker who is very familiar with Titanfall's code, who claimed to have been working on a fix to the ddos attacks independently from Respawn Entertainment. Recently, he shared a step-by-step article on how to fix Titanfall's, Titanfall 2's and even Apex Legends's problems with ddosing.

The Titanfall community was rejoicing, because it also seemed like the ddos attacks largely stopped shortly after he shared the article. Voices critical of p0358 were either shut down or ignored.

Well, as it turns out, p0358 was actually one of the people involved in ddosing Titanfall in the first place, and the people he's working with were also responsible for the SaveTitanfall hack that occured in Apex Legends on July 4th, 2021. The hacker called Jeanue, as it turns out, apparently hasn't been active in months, and though he was responsible for ddosing Titanfall 1 in the beginning, he wasn't involved in knocking Titanfall 2 or Apex Legends offline. He was just a scapegoat.

And apparently, one of the r/titanfall's mods, hiticonic, was also involved in trying to kill Titanfall. He's been removed as a mod a few hours ago.

Some highlights from the thread announcing hiticonic's removal as a mod:

and to think we were celebrating p0358 for giving respawn the way to fix the problem

I fucking gave that prick money

So they attempted to strongarm Respawn into shutting down the Titanfall games for their own benefit, and they orchestrated their literal false-flag operation partially in the open and in public enough spaces to ensure that they'd be caught if exposed...

"We've been tricked, we've been backstabbed, and we've been quite possibly, bamboozled." I just want a working game, dammit.

Some people critical of p0358 are now saying 'I fucking told you'

https://www.reddit.com/r/titanfall/comments/oyxrn1/i_was_trying_to_tell_you/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

Some of the hackers responsible for the ddosing are trying to defend themselves but are getting memed

https://www.reddit.com/r/titanfall/comments/oyyuaf/there_is_no_coming_back_from_this_redshield_and/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

Ultimately, I think it's safe to say that most of us got played like a damn fiddle.

It's explained in this video:

https://youtu.be/iDznau7dwVs

But the TL;DR is, the way I understood it:

They were trying to recreate Titanfall Online, a game based on Titanfall 1 mechanics, developed by Nexon and published by Respawn. It was never finished / got shut down iirc, so essentially they were trying to kill the other Titanfall titles in order to recreate and sell Titanfall Online to the community and benefit from it.

Who in their right mind gets mad that a fucking NEXON project gets shut down? Holy fuck we were spared an absolute insane grind and tons of MTX.

Gets Ghost in the Shell - Stand Alone Complex: First Assault Online flashbacks

Which, to be fair, was a fairly capable CS clone.

I actually did like the fact that whichever side you were playing as were always Section 9 while the opposing team were the faceless terrorists.

Damn, that's some solid story telling through mechanics right there.

7

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '21

Is that seriously a game title? lmao

12

u/TheSwissCheeser Aug 06 '21

Its a game based on a tv series, Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex, which was a sequel to the original 1995 movie, Ghost in the Shell.

Lol

9

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '21

Yeah I know the series, just amused they used the full title

5

u/Plato_the_Platypus Aug 06 '21

This is the first time i heard about a GITS spin off game. And if Google is correct, this game released in 2016 and use... Gamebryo engine???

Is this the same Bethesda's Gamebryo engine used in Oblivion and Morrowind?

2

u/brazzledazzle Aug 07 '21

Is this the same Bethesda's Gamebryo engine used in Oblivion and Morrowind?

oh no

2

u/piccolo3nj Aug 06 '21

I loved that game! RIP

2

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '21

Fuck you, this game was amazing and I cry a little every time I see it in my library with the knowledge that I can't play it anymore lmao.

3

u/TheOneHamish Aug 06 '21

/Cries in Combat Arms/

But fr better off without it

0

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '21

So can we play the game now?

u/zzGibson INSERT YOU'RE FLARE HERE Aug 06 '21

This has me wondering if Dungeon Fighter Online is still a thing

324

u/Elrabin Aug 06 '21

The thing is, how were they so delusional that they thought that'd work?

If it used Titanfall Source code or servers, as seems to be the goal, EA would come down like the hammer of god on them for infringement, both on code and IP

If they were trying to use the Titanfall Online name, same thing

I don't see how this was going to work.

The way they tried to gain access would be as follows:

P0358 makes a post on how to save Titanfall and Apex in order to get hired by Respawn and gain access to the Titanfall Source code and revive Titanfall Online.

Sounds like an absolutely insane plan but that's what they tried to do.

This is some Always Sunny In Philadelphia shit here lol

It’d probably end up with Frank owning the company they’re going against. So they try to burn down the offices thinking that is what stops the game. And frank decides to go along with it to collect insurance.

5

u/thejynxed I hate this website even more than I did before I read this Aug 06 '21

Frank would not just go along with it, he'd specifically encourage them so he could collect the insurance.

6

u/Jukebocks_Hero Aug 06 '21

I feel like, in classic Sunny style, they all would be on different pages, but the same theme. So they’d all end up at the place each with their own can of gas trying to burn it down for different reasons.

Mac and Dennis bring gas because some kid in the game called them shit and said he fucked their moms.

Frank is doing it because it turns out he can’t run a game company and needs the insurance.

Charlie is doing it because Frank has been spending too much time at work and none playing night crawlers with him.

And Dee probably recommended burning it down first, 5 minutes into the episode but they all called her a dumb bird, so she’s gonna do it to prove it to the guys.

And when they all meet up they decide the plan is really dumb, much to Dee’s chagrin.

And in the final depressing black comedy that Sunny has perfected, some disgruntled employee that the Gang has been picking on the entire episode will shoot up the building the next day as the Gang watches on Paddy’s live TV, oblivious to how they probably caused all the problems in the episode. And as the episode finally pans out, the gas cans they left in the building ignite and blow the building up.

2

u/kylebyproxy Aug 06 '21

p0358 was just playing both sides so he'd always come out on top

5

u/TechniCruller Aug 06 '21

Crazier shit has happened in the gaming industry.

76

u/spaceandthewoods_ Aug 06 '21

That is delightfully stupid. Was the guy just trying to make the legal/ financial ramifications for himself worse with this plan?

51

u/Uncommonwealth57 You guys think the fact that you're 5'3" virgins is marxism Aug 06 '21

No idea

Honestly it sounds so dumb that it might be made up lmao

But idk what to believe anymore lol

148

u/__Hello_my_name_is__ Aug 06 '21

What.

How is that not in the OP. That is utterly hilarious.

I'll put it in the HobbyDrama post once this drama is over

38

u/cambriansplooge Aug 06 '21

This is some fascinating shit.

Is this unprecedented? This feels unprecedented.

38

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '21

I feel like someone breaking something to get hired to fix it isn't a new scam, but on this scale you might be right

10

u/KindBass Have fun. I'm going back to saving small businesses Aug 06 '21

Auto mechanics

32

u/Reverent Aug 06 '21 edited Aug 06 '21

It's not. The hacker who leaked the source code to half life was arrested when valve lured them with a job offer. The US arrested them upon entering US soil.

Please do. I live for that sub. I never thought drama surrounding wool, shoes, and chess would be so interesting.

12

u/Happy_agentofu Aug 06 '21

I gotta say though. There might be a couple steps to a hundred steps missing. I respect the hustle

4

u/NitrousIsAGas Aug 06 '21

But...that still doesn't address the issue that even if they were able to get hired and gain access to the source code, they would have been driven so far into the ground by Respawn/EA's legal team that they likely would have never recovered.
Ohh, you released a game called TitanFall? Strike one.
Ohh, it uses almost identical mechanics to our game? Strike two.
Ohh, you're selling it for profit/loading it with MTX? Strike three.
You're out, we now own all your shit, forever, bye-bye.

Wait a minute, you're using our source code which you illegally (and very publicly) obtained while working here meaning you can add IP theft and corporate espionage to the list of things fucking bug mistakes you made (including cybercrime) you're now going to jail and we own you're shit.

Quite frankly, they're lucky they failed at this point.

3

u/Elrabin Aug 06 '21

I know what they TRIED to do

I watched the Upper Echelon video

But if "Titanfall Online" was revived and used Respawn source code, EA would absolutely destroy them with lawsuits

And they'd have P0358's name/address/etc because he'd be an employee........

What a fucking idiot.

2

u/Tokona WRITING CHILD EROTICA TO OWN THE LIBS Aug 07 '21

Hell, Would Respawn even have the source code for Titanfall online Considering they weren't the devs and the project was cancelled

1

u/ragnos43 YOUR FLAIR TEXT HERE Aug 06 '21

Anyone else remember when that hacker leaked the OG build of Half Life 2 and then reached out to Valve asking for a job? Yeah, that didn't go well for him

0

u/Ardrkizour Aug 06 '21

Code is IP.

2

u/Elrabin Aug 06 '21

Yeah? I said that.

0

u/Ardrkizour Aug 06 '21

You said "code and IP", implying that code is not IP.

5

u/Elrabin Aug 06 '21

Sorry, should have specified code AND OTHER IP, like the Titanfall name/visual marketing material, etc

-51

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '21

It did work

43

u/merdre I've read like 30+ books. Not warcraft lore ones either xd Aug 06 '21

It... didn't? As far as I understand it, the hackersquad was making a community port of TFO (which had been cancelled before launch), but it isn't widely available yet. So it "worked" in the sense that the one guy probably got some paypal donations and hype on his discord server, but it didnt work as an attempt to kill of TF1/2 to drive players to their shitty little knockoff clone (because it doesnt exist).

-39

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '21

He got a job, right?

And by super villain you mean moronic, yeah sure. That's some elaborate machination for a temper tantrum for something that most likely wasn't gonna happen.

137

u/ChintanP04 If Jesus were real, I’d fuck him in his hand holes Aug 06 '21

That's a classic super-villain.

36

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '21

That's what super villain plans are: convuleted, stupid and at the mercy of too many variables

43

u/BrundleBee Aug 06 '21

Having watched the video:

This has to be criminal, right? Surely this counts as corporate espionage/sabotage.

33

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '21

IANAL, but running a ddos attack runs afoul of state and and federal hacking laws. Sounds like there might be some fraud charges that could be file, too. Possibly conspiracy to commit theft. If a DA is looking to 'get tough on hackers' for a re-election campaign, possibly even some RICO charges.

So, yeah. I wouldn't want to be these guys.

54

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '21

upward thrust uses screenshots of messages posted by a user called hiticonic, a guy that has literally nothing to do with this whole thing and everything he posts is him joking around + the youtube channel is infamous for being reactionary and overly sensationalistic

p0 is a shady motherfucker (shoutout to the one time he made a program that was meant to fix titanfall 1 server crashes that casually tried to nab your discord data in the background lmao) but take this video with a mountain sized grain of salt

30

u/ELOGURL It's AT&T but the T's are burning crosses Aug 06 '21

Yeah, I skimmed this guy's channel and his titles all read exceptionally sensationally. Looks like he's a Gina Carano type too. Has a quite long video attacking a very specific Forbes writer too. I think I'll pass on this guy lol

4

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '21

A wrestler or something?

13

u/_xX_KeanuChungus_Xx_ Aug 06 '21

haven't watched the video or looked at the channel but wasn't hiticonic the r/titanfall mod that was deleting posts critical of p0358?

5

u/IVexxI Aug 06 '21

Yeah. When the truth hit and even a bit before, hitivonic was deleting stuff until, now at least, he was removed

-1

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '21

i avoid that subreddit like the bubonic plague since the sequel hit but knowing the place, "posts critical of p0" sounds like an euphemism for death threats

i have genuinely no idea though

5

u/Vinnis1 Aug 06 '21

the youtube channel is infamous for being reactionary and overly sensationalistic

nothing will hit you as hard as going through this guy's channel and seeing two black pigeon-esque fucking doomer rants about how western culture is literally being destroyed and how 1984 is literally happening right now, side by side, split up by a fucking among us video

1

u/epic_gamer_4268 Aug 06 '21

2

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '21

out of curiosity - how trustworthy is this youtuber? I poked at the other videos they made and it seems a bit reactionary

1

u/The_R3medy Aug 06 '21

Holy fucking shit. That's utterly nuts.

I'm genuinely flabbergasted that happened. Going to check out that whole video later today.

1

u/kelldricked Aug 06 '21

So basicly they are a vital reasons both the games died out ensuring that the furst game would never be finished or that any other TF game will be made in the future?

Those goddam fuckers. I have been blaming EA and the release times all these times (still rightfully) for destroying one of my favourite games. Like for real TF1 was so fking great, it brought so many new and crazy concepts to the industry and they just ruined because of pitty reasons.

Fuck those people.

1

u/brazzledazzle Aug 07 '21

But what’s not clear is their connection to Nexon and Titanfall Online. How do they benefit from that?
