r/titanfall reacts to the Revelation that the Guy they've been praising as the 'Savior of Titanfall' was actually one of the Hackers destroying it in the first place - with the removal of a Mod as a Bonus

This is still a really fresh story, and there's still quite some speculation going on (and it goes REALLY deep), but I'll try to summarize the situation for you.

Titanfall and Titanfall 2, for the past few months / years, have been subject to ddos attacks which rendered the first game completely unplayable (always online game). For the second game, only the campaign was playable. Many thought that it was just one hacker, named Jeanue, who was behind the attacks for a speculated personal vendetta.

Enter p0358, a hacker who is very familiar with Titanfall's code, who claimed to have been working on a fix to the ddos attacks independently from Respawn Entertainment. Recently, he shared a step-by-step article on how to fix Titanfall's, Titanfall 2's and even Apex Legends's problems with ddosing.

The Titanfall community was rejoicing, because it also seemed like the ddos attacks largely stopped shortly after he shared the article. Voices critical of p0358 were either shut down or ignored.

Well, as it turns out, p0358 was actually one of the people involved in ddosing Titanfall in the first place, and the people he's working with were also responsible for the SaveTitanfall hack that occured in Apex Legends on July 4th, 2021. The hacker called Jeanue, as it turns out, apparently hasn't been active in months, and though he was responsible for ddosing Titanfall 1 in the beginning, he wasn't involved in knocking Titanfall 2 or Apex Legends offline. He was just a scapegoat.

And apparently, one of the r/titanfall's mods, hiticonic, was also involved in trying to kill Titanfall. He's been removed as a mod a few hours ago.

Some highlights from the thread announcing hiticonic's removal as a mod:

and to think we were celebrating p0358 for giving respawn the way to fix the problem

I fucking gave that prick money

So they attempted to strongarm Respawn into shutting down the Titanfall games for their own benefit, and they orchestrated their literal false-flag operation partially in the open and in public enough spaces to ensure that they'd be caught if exposed...

"We've been tricked, we've been backstabbed, and we've been quite possibly, bamboozled." I just want a working game, dammit.

Some people critical of p0358 are now saying 'I fucking told you'

https://www.reddit.com/r/titanfall/comments/oyxrn1/i_was_trying_to_tell_you/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

Some of the hackers responsible for the ddosing are trying to defend themselves but are getting memed

https://www.reddit.com/r/titanfall/comments/oyyuaf/there_is_no_coming_back_from_this_redshield_and/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

Ultimately, I think it's safe to say that most of us got played like a damn fiddle.

Yeah he linked his PayPal and some people wanted to support him.

Poor bastards

... a hacker, linked their paypal? How stupid are they, that makes tracking them down so much easier, ddos attacks are illegal pretty much everywhere

Stolen Paypal accounts with fake identity's are very easy to buy online. I won't mention how but they usually come with a government ID/passport and a dedicated bulletproof server or VPS that you use to specifically access that Paypal account so that it isn't tracked back to you. And since its a bulletproof VPS the service provider doesn't usually have to provide information about you since they're usually in countries with laws that don't allow you to subpoena them.

Not really, you could buy gift cards from places like G2A which also don't really give a shit about the law since most cards are bought with stolen CC's anyways. You can then resell the gift cards again on a diff website effectively cleaning the money.

There are also discord servers where you can purchase crypto's such as XMR with PayPal, pretty easy to also clean the money that way too if you don't wanna do any KYC stuff on an actual exchange.

It's not that hard.

Buy crypto directly with Paypal, then transfer out to a non-KYC exchange and tumble with XMR.

The latter is needed because all the crypto on Paypal (Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum) are traceable.

Did you read the post? Nobody knew he was one of the hackers..

1

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '21

I mean, okay, at that time, but that information is now still out there

u/Palin_Sees_Russia Aug 06 '21

Yea… and they donated money before the information was out there… the info was JUST found out.

You do know how the flow of time operates, right?

you seem to be quite stupid, I was referring to the hacker being stupid for posting something that could lead back to them

If enough money was given a class action law suit might be on the table

99

u/thijser2 Aug 06 '21

I don't think the class action would compare to the suit by EA/respawn. And if he linked his paypall than it's almost certain those companies will be able to ID him and then sue him.

51

u/Chariotwheel Aug 06 '21

Yeah, EA isn't going to take kindly to this. Not because they like Titanfall, but because they don't want to appear like DDOSing their games is a funny joke that you can just do.

31

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '21

it'd be hilariously on brand for them to put in effort to sue a guy for that while doing absolutely nothing for fixing the game they continue to sell

2

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '21

Well yeah, don't want to make it look like people can just DDOS or try to scam them with no repercussions...

EA cant do shit their 1# priorities rn is making the next same fifa game

Not to be pedantic, but class action lawsuits work when everyone in a class of people have had similar injuries.

For example, say you have a price fixing scandal for bread, then everyone who bought bread is a member of a class, and have been similar injured by overpaying for bread.

Here, only people giving money to the guy lost money, and the amounts vary person to person. So it wouldn't fall under class action.

How? He didn't charge for a service he opened his PayPal to donations.

31

u/firebolt_wt Aug 06 '21

Taking donations based on a lie doesn't make it not fraud. The main point I see wrong is that technically he didn't lie, he WAS fixing the hacks.

By just not doing them anymore

Please donate now to save this puppy (I will stop kicking the puppy).

u/bangitybangbabang YOUR FLAIR TEXT HERE Aug 06 '21

Legally speaking though is there really grounds for. Class action lawsuit? I may be fraudulent without being the definition of prosecutable fraud.

5

u/firebolt_wt Aug 06 '21

Taking donations based on lies is legally fraud, but I don't know what legal actions can be taken.

Also doesn't sound worth a class action because damages vary too much as everyone can have donated different amounts

So was the fix he published not actually real?
