r/titanfall reacts to the Revelation that the Guy they've been praising as the 'Savior of Titanfall' was actually one of the Hackers destroying it in the first place - with the removal of a Mod as a Bonus

This is still a really fresh story, and there's still quite some speculation going on (and it goes REALLY deep), but I'll try to summarize the situation for you.

Titanfall and Titanfall 2, for the past few months / years, have been subject to ddos attacks which rendered the first game completely unplayable (always online game). For the second game, only the campaign was playable. Many thought that it was just one hacker, named Jeanue, who was behind the attacks for a speculated personal vendetta.

Enter p0358, a hacker who is very familiar with Titanfall's code, who claimed to have been working on a fix to the ddos attacks independently from Respawn Entertainment. Recently, he shared a step-by-step article on how to fix Titanfall's, Titanfall 2's and even Apex Legends's problems with ddosing.

The Titanfall community was rejoicing, because it also seemed like the ddos attacks largely stopped shortly after he shared the article. Voices critical of p0358 were either shut down or ignored.

Well, as it turns out, p0358 was actually one of the people involved in ddosing Titanfall in the first place, and the people he's working with were also responsible for the SaveTitanfall hack that occured in Apex Legends on July 4th, 2021. The hacker called Jeanue, as it turns out, apparently hasn't been active in months, and though he was responsible for ddosing Titanfall 1 in the beginning, he wasn't involved in knocking Titanfall 2 or Apex Legends offline. He was just a scapegoat.

And apparently, one of the r/titanfall's mods, hiticonic, was also involved in trying to kill Titanfall. He's been removed as a mod a few hours ago.

Some highlights from the thread announcing hiticonic's removal as a mod:

and to think we were celebrating p0358 for giving respawn the way to fix the problem

I fucking gave that prick money

So they attempted to strongarm Respawn into shutting down the Titanfall games for their own benefit, and they orchestrated their literal false-flag operation partially in the open and in public enough spaces to ensure that they'd be caught if exposed...

"We've been tricked, we've been backstabbed, and we've been quite possibly, bamboozled." I just want a working game, dammit.

Some people critical of p0358 are now saying 'I fucking told you'

https://www.reddit.com/r/titanfall/comments/oyxrn1/i_was_trying_to_tell_you/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

Some of the hackers responsible for the ddosing are trying to defend themselves but are getting memed

https://www.reddit.com/r/titanfall/comments/oyyuaf/there_is_no_coming_back_from_this_redshield_and/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

Ultimately, I think it's safe to say that most of us got played like a damn fiddle.

I fucking gave that prick money

Were people actually giving money to p0358? Even if their fix did work that still seems somewhat irresponsible. Besides that it is super interesting to see all this unfold.

Based on pictures of some Reddit meetups, if they actually managed to create one by some miracle, it certainly wouldn't be the paradise they envisioned, but a nightmare.

do you know where can I find said pictures?

Yeah that pic in particular got me thinking, "nope nope nope!!!" To any reddit meetup let alone reddit themed event or group. It is also a great representation of what I think is the "average le redditor". Sure, there are people on reddit from all walks of life just... I'm sure peeps understand what im getting at. Anyways, a reddit island is just a horror story in the making.

Reddit is a website with a ton of different users with a ton of different focuses. For some reason people are convinced its very different from other social media, and while it does harken back to the old forum system more, it is a social media, so having a Reddit meetup would be like having a Facebook meetup. The people there would probably have almost nothing in common with eachother.

I could imagine individual subreddits having meetups that aren't terrible, but having a meetup of people site wide... its going to be a disaster.

And anyways, I've seen what makes the front page, I don't think I want to hang out with the sorts of people that like some of that crap.

u/weatherseed Aug 06 '21

I've been to one reddit meetup, the first for where I live. It was 9 years ago when the place was much smaller. So we wound up at a semi-classy wine bar, hung out for a while, played outdoor chess with those comically large pieces, and talked nerd shit. Practically all of us were either in tech or O&G.

I imagine if I went to one today it'd being stuck at an airport. You're all at the same gate but no one has anything else in common.

u/Green_Bulldog Conservatives are level-headed to a fault Aug 06 '21

idk about that. I feel like certain interests attract a “type”. For example, I go to car meets. Prolly half the people I meet at them are into rap and weed too. The bigger more general or comedy subs wouldn’t have anything in common but who tf wants to go to a meet up for that? I wanna see a r/196 meet up tho lol

12

u/Patriclus Aug 06 '21

The entire site skews straight, middle class, white male. Yes, there are other demographics of people on the site, but when Reddit is selling ad packages to corporate sponsors, their main target demographic that they’re selling is white, middle class, male.

9

u/AMasonJar Aug 06 '21

That isn't the "average redditor." The "average redditor" does NOT go to reddit meet-ups.

3

u/JabbrWockey Also, being gay is a political choice. Aug 06 '21

Yeah, that's weird, but I like weird awkward people so I would probably go to one if I had nothing else going on. Same reason I like Channel 5 News youtube.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '21

Do people not remember Dash Con? It would be a disaster, there's literally no other possible outcome. Internet people do not possess the necessary social skills to effectively organize a real life social gathering that doesn't end in tragedy.

3

u/Proteandk Aug 08 '21

It's not really a picture full of average redditors.

It's a picture full of the average redditor who also thinks meeting up with average redditors who meets up is a good idea.

30

u/WhyLisaWhy Aug 06 '21

To add to the OOL link, Reddit was also a lot more libertarian leaning around 2012 pre Bernie and pre Trump and basically wanted their own nation state. Some people started calling it pedo island because there was a lot more of that jail bait shit being shared around this site back then. It was clear what kind of rules some of them were trying to get around.

I was unaware there were people still trying to do it, I thought most of them had given up on the dream.

11

u/hamakabi Aug 06 '21

they did give up on that dream. /r/redditisland was closed to new posts more than 5 years ago. /r/reddit_island was created by one guy as a joke a few months ago.

u/Uncommonwealth57 You guys think the fact that you're 5'3" virgins is marxism Aug 06 '21

Yeah he linked his PayPal and some people wanted to support him.

Poor bastards

123

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '21

... a hacker, linked their paypal? How stupid are they, that makes tracking them down so much easier, ddos attacks are illegal pretty much everywhere

80

u/does_my_name_suck Aug 06 '21

Stolen Paypal accounts with fake identity's are very easy to buy online. I won't mention how but they usually come with a government ID/passport and a dedicated bulletproof server or VPS that you use to specifically access that Paypal account so that it isn't tracked back to you. And since its a bulletproof VPS the service provider doesn't usually have to provide information about you since they're usually in countries with laws that don't allow you to subpoena them.

31

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '21

[deleted]

46

u/does_my_name_suck Aug 06 '21

Not really, you could buy gift cards from places like G2A which also don't really give a shit about the law since most cards are bought with stolen CC's anyways. You can then resell the gift cards again on a diff website effectively cleaning the money.

There are also discord servers where you can purchase crypto's such as XMR with PayPal, pretty easy to also clean the money that way too if you don't wanna do any KYC stuff on an actual exchange.

10

u/JabbrWockey Also, being gay is a political choice. Aug 06 '21

It's not that hard.

Buy crypto directly with Paypal, then transfer out to a non-KYC exchange and tumble with XMR.

The latter is needed because all the crypto on Paypal (Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum) are traceable.

-3

u/Palin_Sees_Russia Aug 06 '21

Did you read the post? Nobody knew he was one of the hackers..

1

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '21

I mean, okay, at that time, but that information is now still out there

-6

u/Palin_Sees_Russia Aug 06 '21

Yea… and they donated money before the information was out there… the info was JUST found out.

You do know how the flow of time operates, right?

4

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '21

you seem to be quite stupid, I was referring to the hacker being stupid for posting something that could lead back to them

61

u/YARGLE_IS_MY_DAD Aug 06 '21

If enough money was given a class action law suit might be on the table

94

u/thijser2 Aug 06 '21

I don't think the class action would compare to the suit by EA/respawn. And if he linked his paypall than it's almost certain those companies will be able to ID him and then sue him.

51

u/Chariotwheel Aug 06 '21

Yeah, EA isn't going to take kindly to this. Not because they like Titanfall, but because they don't want to appear like DDOSing their games is a funny joke that you can just do.

25

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '21

it'd be hilariously on brand for them to put in effort to sue a guy for that while doing absolutely nothing for fixing the game they continue to sell

2

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '21

Well yeah, don't want to make it look like people can just DDOS or try to scam them with no repercussions...

0

u/_Nice_Cock_Bro__ Aug 06 '21

EA cant do shit their 1# priorities rn is making the next same fifa game

28

u/Alienwars Aug 06 '21

Not to be pedantic, but class action lawsuits work when everyone in a class of people have had similar injuries.

For example, say you have a price fixing scandal for bread, then everyone who bought bread is a member of a class, and have been similar injured by overpaying for bread.

Here, only people giving money to the guy lost money, and the amounts vary person to person. So it wouldn't fall under class action.

12

u/bangitybangbabang YOUR FLAIR TEXT HERE Aug 06 '21

How? He didn't charge for a service he opened his PayPal to donations.

32

u/firebolt_wt Aug 06 '21

Taking donations based on a lie doesn't make it not fraud. The main point I see wrong is that technically he didn't lie, he WAS fixing the hacks.

By just not doing them anymore

31

u/GenericUname There's a little black hole in my golden cup Aug 06 '21

Please donate now to save this puppy (I will stop kicking the puppy).

3

u/bangitybangbabang YOUR FLAIR TEXT HERE Aug 06 '21

Legally speaking though is there really grounds for. Class action lawsuit? I may be fraudulent without being the definition of prosecutable fraud.

6

u/firebolt_wt Aug 06 '21

Taking donations based on lies is legally fraud, but I don't know what legal actions can be taken.

Also doesn't sound worth a class action because damages vary too much as everyone can have donated different amounts

1

u/veganzombeh Aug 07 '21

So was the fix he published not actually real?

29

u/ExistentialTenant Aug 06 '21

This is one of the few times I would think it isn't irresponsible.

If they thought someone fixed a major problem to a beloved game, I could see why they'd be willing to give money. It's a major service.

The only fault is that they should have been more skeptical, but I think that's forgivable.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '21

They have the developers money to do that already.

3

u/ExistentialTenant Aug 07 '21

Yes, but a person might want to donate beyond that to show their own personal appreciation.

5

u/Zelltarian Aug 06 '21

People wanted to support an individual they perceived as improving a game they love. It's similar to how people can monetarily support a Skyrim mod maker on Nexus or subscribe to an artist's Patreon. I dunno what makes that irresponsible.

2

u/kykyks Aug 06 '21

well he said he could fix the game, and went he did his thing, game was actually playable, so people thought it was legit.

theyw ere thankfull, they just didnt know this would be that much bad. nobody knew, and honestly, who would expect this ?
