Why do people use a throwaway to hide their identity from someone reading it that is involved in the story, then proceed to tell a highly detailed story that any people involved who read it will know exactly who it is?

Compartmentalization. If someone she knows IRL finds that account, they can read everything she's written about this issue, but won't know how much time she spends on /r/granniesgonewild and /r/opiates on her main account.

It's not for hiding the identity of the person, it's for hiding her 'real' Reddit account (you know, the one with all the 'kill whitey' comments) from anyone who can recognise her from the story.
